    Data driven flavour model

    Get PDF
A bottom-up approach has been adopted to identify a flavour model that agrees with present experimental measurements. The charged fermion mass hierarchies suggest that only the top Yukawa term should be present at the renormalisable level. Similarly, describing the lightness of the active neutrinos through the type-I Seesaw mechanism, right-handed neutrino mass terms should also be present at the renormalisable level. The flavour symmetry of the Lagrangian including the fermionic kinetic terms and only the top Yukawa is then a combination of U(2) and U(3) factors. Once considering the Majorana neutrino terms, the associated symmetry is O(3). Lighter charged fermion and active neutrino masses and quark and lepton mixings arise considering specific spurion fields à la Minimal Flavour Violation. The associated phenomenology is investigated and the model turns out to have almost the same flavour protection as the Minimal Flavour Violation in both quark and lepton sectors. Promoting the spurions to dynamical fields, the associated scalar potential is also studied and a minimum is identified such that fermion masses and mixings are correctly reproduced. Very precise predictions for the Majorana phases follow from the minimisation of the scalar potential and thus the neutrinoless-double-beta decay may represent a smoking gun for the model

In-situ measurements of temperature distribution during transmission laser welding of poly(aryletherketone)

In this work, the temperature distribution inside the specimens has been measured during transmission laser welding. The material studied is a high performance thermoplastic of the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family. The assembly consists of a quasi-amorphous sample as the upper part and a semi-crystalline sample as the lower part. The temperature fields were measured by infrared thermography with the camera sensor perpendicular to the welded interface. With an energy beam of 28 J.mm-2 and irradiation time of 15s, we have noticed that the maximum temperature inside the sample is kept far from the PAEK degradation one. Moreover, the temperature at the interface reaches the melting temperature thus assuring enough mobility for polymeric chains to get adhesion at the interface. Finally, the location and size of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) has been determined

Enhancement of mechanical and thermoelectric properties of Ca3Co4O9 by Ag addition

Ca3Co4O9 + x wt.% Ag (x = 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10) polycrystalline thermoelectric ceramics have been prepared by a sol–gel route via nitrates followed by high temperature treatment before sintering. Out-of-plane XRD data have shown that major phase is the Ca3Co4O9 one, accompanied by metallic Ag. SEM observations have agreed with the XRD data. Apparent density measurements have revealed that all samples possess densities ranging between 80% and 90% when Ag content is raised. Mechanical properties have shown a drastic increase of bending stress when Ag is added to the samples. Electrical resistivity decreases with the Ag content, compared with the pure ones, while Seebeck coefficient slightly decreases. Maximum power factor values around 0.43 mW/K2 m at 800 °C have been achieved for the 10 wt.% Ag samples which is much higher than the measured in the pure Ca3Co4O9 samples. This research has been supported by MINECO-FEDER (MAT2013-46505-C3-1-R). CaMnO3–based materials represent a promising family of n-type oxide thermoelectrics. The objective of the present work is assessing the impacts on relevant structural, microstructural and thermoelectric properties of manganites when they are processed by the laser floating zone technique. For this purpose, donor-doped Ca0.9La0.1MnO3, CaMn0.95Nb0.05O3 and undoped CaMnO3 were used. Different growth conditions have been evaluated through combined studies of structural, microstructural, and thermoelectric characteristics. Despite the presence of secondary phases, electrical resistivity is among the best reported in the literature (9 mΩ.cm at 800 °C for La-doped materials grown at 200 mm/h). Essentially high absolute Seebeck coefficient of 320 μV/K at 800 °C was observed for undoped samples grown at 10 mm/h. Power factor is significantly affected by the growth conditions, reaching the highest values when using the lowest pulling rates. Exceptionally high PF (0.39 mW/K2m at 800 °C) was obtained for undoped CaMnO3 samples grown at 10 mm/hpublishe

Tailoring Ca3Co4O9 microstructure and performances using a transient liquid phase sintering additive

et al.A flexible, adaptable, economical and easily scalable processing route, allowing microstructural control, is presented. It involves classical solid state sintering method and addition of liquid promoting compound. Controlled porosity and high thermoelectric performance have been attained in CaCoO by KCO additions, drastically improving the sintering procedure. KCO behaves as transient liquid phase, providing microstructural benefits, vanishing during sintering. Electrical resistivity was improved by enhanced grains connectivity and growth. Significant increase in Seebeck coefficient at high temperatures has been produced while lattice thermal conductivity was unaffected. The best ZT value, estimated at 800°C, assuming the thermal conductivity value at 140°C, is 0.35 for 5wt.% KCO samples. These values are significantly higher than that obtained in highly-dense textured materials at the same temperature. The results suggest that this approach is very effective for preparing highly-performing CaCoO-based thermoelectric materials with relatively high porosity to control thermal conductivity. The authors wish to thank the MINECO-FEDER (MAT2013-46505-C3-1-R) and Gobierno de Aragón-Fondo Social Europeo (Research Groups T12 and T87) for financial support. Significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance in Ca3Co4O9 thermoelectric materials through combined strontium substitution and hot-pressing process

    Get PDF
This work explores the possibilities for a further enhancement of the thermoelectric properties of Ca3Co4O9 by Sr-doping combined with hot-pressing. Modified hot-pressing process resulted in highly-textured and dense ceramics. Sr-doping significantly improves electrical properties, resulting in extremely large power factor (1.2 mW/K2m at 800 °C) due to simultaneous electrical resistivity decrease and Seebeck coefficient increase. The main effect on cumulative electrical performance is provided by the Seebeck coefficient, reaching 270μV/K at 800 °C. XPS revealed relatively high average cobalt oxidation state at room temperature (+3.3), compared to materials produced by conventional sintering. The results of combined XPS and Auger electron spectroscopy emphasize the importance of high densification in Ca3Co4O9-based ceramics for preventing phase decomposition and interaction with CO2 and moisture. Still, despite the exceptional electrical performance, the calculated figure-of-merit (estimated as 0.29 at 800 °C) is around the best reported in the literature due to a high thermal conductivity (4.4 W/K m at room temperature).publishe

Brain functional abnormality in schizo-affective disorder: an fMRI study.

    Get PDF
Background.Schizo-affective disorder has not been studied to any significant extent using functional imaging. The aim of this study was to examine patterns of brain activation and deactivation in patients meeting strict diagnostic criteria for the disorder. METHOD: Thirty-two patients meeting research diagnostic criteria (RDC) for schizo-affective disorder (16 schizomanic and 16 schizodepressive) and 32 matched healthy controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during performance of the n-back task. Linear models were used to obtain maps of activations and deactivations in the groups. RESULTS: Controls showed activation in a network of frontal and other areas and also deactivation in the medial frontal cortex, the precuneus and the parietal cortex. Schizo-affective patients activated significantly less in prefrontal, parietal and temporal regions than the controls, and also showed failure of deactivation in the medial frontal cortex. When task performance was controlled for, the reduced activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the failure of deactivation of the medial frontal cortex remained significant. CONCLUSIONS: Schizo-affective disorder shows a similar pattern of reduced frontal activation to schizophrenia. The disorder is also characterized by failure of deactivation suggestive of default mode network dysfunction

This work presents a short and very efficientmethod to produce high performance textured Ca3Co4O9thermoelectric materials through initial powders modifica-tion. Microstructure has shown good grain orientation, andlow porosity while slightly lower grain sizes were obtained insamples prepared from attrition milled powders. All samplesshow the high density of around 96% of the theoretical value. These similar characteristics are reflected in, approximately, the same electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient valuesfor both types of samples. However, in spite of similar powerfactor (PF) at low temperatures, it is slightly higher at hightemperature for the attrition milled samples. On the otherhand, the processing time reduction (from 38 to 2 h) whenusing attrition milled precursors, leads to lower mechanicalproperties in these samples. All these data clearly point out tothe similar characteristics of both kinds of samples, with adrastic processing time decrease when using attrition milledprecursors, which is of the main economic importance whenconsidering their industrial production
