Quasi-Exact Solvability and the direct approach to invariant subspaces
We propose a more direct approach to constructing differential operators that
preserve polynomial subspaces than the one based on considering elements of the
enveloping algebra of sl(2). This approach is used here to construct new
exactly solvable and quasi-exactly solvable quantum Hamiltonians on the line
which are not Lie-algebraic. It is also applied to generate potentials with
multiple algebraic sectors. We discuss two illustrative examples of these two
applications: an interesting generalization of the Lam\'e potential which
posses four algebraic sectors, and a quasi-exactly solvable deformation of the
Morse potential which is not Lie-algebraic.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Expansion of different subpopulations of CD26 ?/low T cells in allergic and non-allergic asthmatics
CD26 displays variable levels between effector (TH17 >> TH1 > TH2 > Treg) and naive/memory (memory > naive) CD4(+) T lymphocytes. Besides, IL-6/IL(-)6R is associated with TH17-differentiation and asthma severity. Allergic/atopic asthma (AA) is dominated by TH2 responses, while TH17 immunity might either modulate the TH2-dependent inflammation in AA or be an important mechanism boosting non-allergic asthma (NAA). Therefore, in this work we have compared the expression of CD26 and CD126 (IL-6Ralpha) in lymphocytes from different groups of donors: allergic (AA) and non-allergic (NAA) asthma, rhinitis, and healthy subjects. For this purpose, flow cytometry, haematological/biochemical, and in vitro proliferation assays were performed. Our results show a strong CD26-CD126 correlation and an over-representation of CD26(-) subsets with a highly-differentiated effector phenotype in AA (CD4(+)CD26(-/low) T cells) and NAA (CD4(-)CD26(-) gammadelta-T cells). In addition, we found that circulating levels of CD26 (sCD26) were reduced in both AA and NAA, while loss of CD126 expression on different leukocytes correlated with higher disease severity. Finally, selective inhibition of CD26-mRNA translation led to enhanced T cell proliferation in vitro. These findings support that CD26 down-modulation could play a role in facilitating the expansion of highly-differentiated effector T cell subsets in asthma
Epigenetic Silencing of Tumor Suppressor miR-124 Directly Supports STAT3 Activation in Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma
Increasing evidence supports a potential role for STAT3 as a tumor driver in cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL). The mechanisms leading to STAT3 activation are not fully understood; however, we recently found that miR-124, a known STAT3 regulator, is robustly silenced in MF tumor-stage and CTCL cells. OBJECTIVE: We studied here whether deregulation of miR-124 contributes to STAT3 pathway activation in CTCL. METHODS: We measured the effect of ectopic mir-124 expression in active phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3) levels and evaluated the transcriptional impact of miR-124-dependent STAT3 pathway regulation by expression microarray analysis. RESULTS: We found that ectopic expression of miR-124 results in massive downregulation of activated STAT3 in different CTCL lines, which resulted in a significant alteration of genetic signatures related with gene transcription and proliferation such as MYC and E2F. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the importance of the miR-124/STAT3 axis in CTCL and demonstrates that the STAT3 pathway is regulated through epigenetic mechanisms in these cells. Since deregulated STAT3 signaling has a major impact on CTCL initiation and progression, a better understanding of the molecular basis of the miR-124/STAT3 axis may provide useful information for future personalized therapies
Follow-up observations at 16 and 33 GHz of extragalactic sources from WMAP 3-year data: I - Spectral properties
We present follow-up observations of 97 point sources from the Wilkinson
Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 3-year data, contained within the New
Extragalactic WMAP Point Source (NEWPS) catalogue between declinations of -4
and +60 degrees; the sources form a flux-density-limited sample complete to 1.1
Jy (approximately 5 sigma) at 33 GHz. Our observations were made at 16 GHz
using the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) and at 33 GHz with the Very Small
Array (VSA). 94 of the sources have reliable, simultaneous -- typically a few
minutes apart -- observations with both telescopes. The spectra between 13.9
and 33.75 GHz are very different from those of bright sources at low frequency:
44 per cent have rising spectra (alpha < 0.0), where flux density is
proportional to frequency^-alpha, and 93 per cent have spectra with alpha <
0.5; the median spectral index is 0.04. For the brighter sources, the agreement
between VSA and WMAP 33-GHz flux densities averaged over sources is very good.
However, for the fainter sources, the VSA tends to measure lower values for the
flux densities than WMAP. We suggest that the main cause of this effect is

Quantum Mechanics on the cylinder
A new approach to deformation quantization on the cylinder considered as
phase space is presented. The method is based on the standard Moyal formalism
for R^2 adapted to (S^1 x R) by the Weil--Brezin--Zak transformation. The
results are compared with other solutions of this problem presented by
Kasperkovitz and Peev (Ann. Phys. vol. 230, 21 (1994)0 and by Plebanski and
collaborators (Acta Phys. Pol. vol. B 31}, 561 (2000)). The equivalence of

Molecular dynamics simulation for modeling plasma spectroscopy
The ion-electron coupling properties for a ion impurity in an electron gas
and for a two component plasma are carried out on the basis of a regularized
electron-ion potential removing the short-range Coulomb divergence. This work
is largely motivated by the study of radiator dipole relaxation in plasmas
which makes a real link between models and experiments. Current radiative
property models for plasmas include single electron collisions neglecting
charge-charge correlations within the classical quasi-particle approach
commonly used in this field. The dipole relaxation simulation based on
electron-ion molecular dynamics proposed here will provide means to benchmark
and improve model developments. Benefiting from a detailed study of a single
ion imbedded in an electron plasma, the challenging two-component ion-electron
molecular dynamics simulations are proven accurate. They open new possibilities

Inhaled Methoxyflurane Provides Greater Analgesia and Faster Onset of Action Versus Standard Analgesia in Patients With Trauma Pain: InMEDIATE: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Emergency Departments
STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of the InMEDIATE study was to evaluate the change in intensity of traumatic pain over the first 20 min in adult patients treated with methoxyflurane versus standard analgesic treatment in Spain. This the first randomized, active-controlled, multicenter trial of methoxyflurane in the emergency setting in Europe. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled study that enrolled adult patients with acute moderate to severe (score >/=4 on the 11-point Numeric Rating Scale) trauma-associated pain in 14 Spanish emergency departments. Patients were randomized 1:1 to methoxyflurane (up to 2x3 mL) or standard analgesic treatment. Coprimary endpoints were the change from baseline in Numeric Rating Scale pain intensity score during the first 20 minutes of treatment and time to first pain relief. RESULTS: Three hundred five patients were randomized (methoxyflurane 156; standard analgesic treatment 149). Most patients in the standard analgesic treatment group (70%) received intravenous first-step analgesics and 9.4% of patients were treated with opioids. Mean decrease from baseline in Numeric Rating Scale pain intensity score was greater for methoxyflurane than standard analgesic treatment at all points, with a significant treatment difference overall up to 20 minutes (repeated-measures model 2.47 versus 1.39; treatment difference 1.00; 95% confidence interval 0.84 to 1.32). Median time to first pain relief was significantly shorter for methoxyflurane than standard analgesic treatment (3 versus 10 minutes). Methoxyflurane achieved better patient and clinician ratings for pain control and comfort of treatment than standard analgesic treatment and exceeded patient and clinician expectations of treatment in, respectively, 77% and 72% of cases compared with 38% and 19% for standard analgesic treatment. CONCLUSION: These results support consideration of methoxyflurane as a nonnarcotic, easy-to-administer, rapid-acting, first-line alternative to currently available analgesic treatments for trauma pain
Leading-effect vs. Risk-taking in Dynamic Tournaments: Evidence from a Real-life Randomized Experiment
Two 'order effects' may emerge in dynamic tournaments with information feedback. First, participants adjust effort across stages, which could advantage the leading participant who faces a larger 'effective prize' after an initial victory (leading-effect). Second, participants lagging behind may increase risk at the final stage as they have 'nothing to lose' (risk-taking). We use a randomized natural experiment in professional two-game soccer tournaments where the treatment (order of a stage-specific advantage) and team characteristics, e.g. ability, are independent. We develop an identification strategy to test for leading-effects controlling for risk-taking. We find no evidence of leading-effects and negligible risk-taking effects
Variable G and : scalar-tensor versus RG-improved cosmology
We study the consequences due to time varying and in
scalar-tensor theories of gravity for cosmology, inspired by the modifications
introduced by the Renormalization Group (RG) equations in the Quantum Einstein
Gravity. We assume a power-law scale factor in presence contemporarily of both
the scalar field and the matter components of the cosmic fluid, and analyze a
special case and its generalization, also showing the possibility of a phantom
cosmology. In both such situations we find a negative kinetic term for the
scalar field and, possibly, an equation-of-state parameter . A
violation of dominant energy condition (DEC) for is also possible in both
of them; but, while in the first special case the -energy density then
