Near-infrared photometry of globular clusters towards the Galactic bulge: Observations and photometric metallicity indicators
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus. We present wide-field JHKS photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the Two Micron All-Sky Survey photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used to build distance- and reddening-independent relations between observed photometric features and cluster metallicity, optimizing the sample size and metallicity baseline of these relations by supplementing our sample with results from the literature. We find that the magnitude difference between the HB and the RGB bump can be used to predict metallicities, in terms of both iron abundance [Fe/H] and global metallicity [M/H], with a precision of better than 0.1 dex in all three near-IR bandpasses for relatively metal-rich ([M/H] ≳ -1) clusters. Meanwhile, both the slope of the upper RGB and the magnitude difference between the RGB tip and bump are useful metallicity indicators over the entire sampled metallicity range (-2 ≲ [M/H] ≲ 0) with a precision of 0.2 dex or better, despite model predictions that the RGB slope may become unreliable at high (near-solar) metallicities. Our results agree with previous calibrations in light of the relevant uncertainties, and we discuss implications for clusters with controversial metallicities as well as directions for further investigation.https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article-lookup/doi/10.1093/mnras/stw243
Numerical modeling of baroclinic instability
The Eady model of baroclinic instability applied to a rotating channel with Ekman layers at the top and bottom is extended to a beta-plane channel. Changes in the shape and position of the boundary separating the regions of axially symmetric and wavelike motion are predicted
The peculiar Na-O anticorrelation of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6440
Context. Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) are essential tools to understand
the earliest epoch of the Milky Way, since they are among the oldest objects in
the Universe and can be used to trace its formation and evolution. Current
studies using high resolution spectroscopy for many stars in each of a large
sample of GCs allow us to develop a detailed observational picture about their
formation and their relation with the Galaxy. However, it is necessary to
complete this picture by including GCs that belong to all major Galactic
components, including the Bulge. Aims. Our aim is to perform a detailed
chemical analyses of the bulge GC NGC 6440 in order to determine if this object
has Multiple Populations (MPs) and investigate its relation with the Bulge of
the Milky Way and with the other Galactic GCs, especially those associated with
the Bulge, which are largely poorly studied. Methods. We determined the stellar
parameters and the chemical abundances of light elements (Na, Al), iron-peak
elements (Fe, Sc, Mn, Co, Ni), -elements (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) and heavy
elements (Ba, Eu) in seven red giant members of NGC 6440 using high resolution
spectroscopy from FLAMES@UVES. Results. We found a mean iron content of
[Fe/H]=-0.500.03 dex in agreement with other studies. We found no internal
iron spread. On the other hand, Na and Al show a significant intrinsic spread,
but the cluster has no significant O-Na anticorrelation nor exhibits a Mg-Al
anticorrelation. The -elements show good agreement with the Bulge field
star trend, although they are at the high alpha end and are also higher than
those of other GCs of comparable metallicity. The heavy elements are dominated
by the r-process, indicating a strong contribution by SNeII. The chemical
analysis suggests an origin similar to that of the Bulge field stars.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in A&
A Search for Old Star Clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report the first results of a color-magnitude diagram survey of 25
candidate old LMC clusters. For almost all of the sample, it was possible to
reach the turnoff region, and in many clusters we have several magnitudes of
the main sequence. Age estimates based on the magnitude difference
between the giant branch clump and the turnoff revealed that no new old
clusters were found. The candidates turned out to be of intermediate age (1-3
Gyr) We show that the apparently old ages as inferred from integrated UBV
colors can be explained by a combination of stochastic effects produced by
bright stars and by photometric errors for faint clusters lying in crowded
fields. The relatively metal poor candidates from the CaII triplet spectroscopy
also turned out to be of intermediate age. This, combined with the fact that
they lie far out in the disk, yields interesting constraints regarding the
formation and evolution of the LMC disk. We also study the age distribution of
intermediate age and old clusters This homogeneous set of accurate relative
ages allows us to make an improved study of the history of cluster
formation/destruction for ages Gyr. We confirm previous indications that
there was apparently no cluster formation in the LMC during the period from 3-8
Gyr ago, and that there was a pronounced epoch of cluster formation beginning 3
Gyrs ago that peaked at about 1.5 Gyrs ago. Our results suggest that there are
few, if any, genuine old clusters in the LMC left to be found.Comment: LaTeX, to be published in Nov. 1997 Astronomical Journa

Ultra-deep GEMINI near-infrared observations of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6624
We used ultra-deep and images secured with the near-infrared GSAOI
camera assisted by the multi-conjugate adaptive optics system GeMS at the
GEMINI South Telescope in Chile, to obtain a (, ) color-magnitude
diagram (CMD) for the bulge globular cluster NGC 6624. We obtained the deepest
and most accurate near-infrared CMD from the ground for this cluster, by
reaching 21.5, approximately 8 magnitudes below the horizontal
branch level. The entire extension of the Main Sequence (MS) is nicely sampled
and at 20 we detected the so-called MS "knee" in a purely
near-infrared CMD. By taking advantage of the exquisite quality of the data, we
estimated the absolute age of NGC 6624 ( = 12.0 0.5 Gyr), which
turns out to be in good agreement with previous studies in the literature. We
also analyzed the luminosity and mass functions of MS stars down to M
0.45 M finding evidence of a significant increase of low-mass stars
at increasing distances from the cluster center. This is a clear signature of
mass segregation, confirming that NGC 6624 is in an advanced stage of dynamical
evolution.Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ. 39 pages, 19 figures, 1 tabl
