    Las instituciones sociales y la desigualdad entre los jóvenes. Nivel formativo, tipo de ocupación y reproducción intergeneracional como elementos diferenciadores

    Entre los elementos más relevantes en los procesos de transición hacia la adultez están los estudios terminados, la incorporación al mercado laboral y la emancipación residencial; aunque las decisiones personales tengan influencia en el cuándo y cómo de estos procesos, son las estructuras sociales las que en mayor medida determinarían el nivel de estudios terminados, el momento de incorporación al mercado laboral y el tipo de trabajo, como también el momento de la transición residencial. La coyuntura económica, el sistema educativo y muy especialmente el origen familiar influirían en estos procesos, ocasionando diferencias notables entre los jóvenes a la hora de afrontar las transiciones educativa, laboral y residencial. En este artículo se describen estas diferencias en función de distintas variables independientes como la edad, el sexo, el tipo de hábitat o el origen familiar, poniendo en evidencia la heterogeneidad entre los jóvenes en lo que se refiere a las variables mencionadas. La ECV (Encuesta de Condiciones de Vida) de los años 2011 y 2014 de INE (Instituto Nacional de Estadistica) es la base de datos fundamental para el presente trabajo.Among the most relevant aspects in the transition process to adulthood are the educational attainment, the transition to labor market and the emancipation; although personal decisions may influence about when and how, It is the social structures that would determine the level of completed studies, the moment of incorporation into the labor market and the type of work, as well as the time of the residential transition. The economic situation, the educational system and specially the family background would influence these processes, resulting in remarkable differences among young people at the time of dealing with the educational, working and living transitions. In this article these differences are described according to several independent variables as age, sex, habitat type or family background, highlighting the heterogeneity among young people with regard to above mentioned variables.     La recuperación mutua en personas con trastornos psicológicos o diversidad funcional a través de la práctica creativa

    In this paper we introduce the concept of “mutual recovery” and we propose creative practices as efficient recovery tools people with both mental health problems as some sort of functional diversity. Compared with the traditional concept of “art therapy” we propose the concept of “creative practice” as more consistent with the model of “mutual recovery.” To do this, we first make a brief critical review of the relationship between art and madness. Next, we present the related concepts of “recovery” and “mutual recovery” in the context of what has become known as the “health humanities”. Finally, we describe two creative practices currently being tested in Spain in the context of the a international research project about mutual recovery:Creative workshops with people with serious mental illness at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Seville and the theater group of people with diverse functionality with the Down Syndrome Association of Seville.En el presente artículo introducimos el concepto de “recuperación mutua” y proponemos las prácticas creativas como herramientas eficientesde recuperación de personas tanto con problemas de salud mental como con algún tipo de diversidad funcional. Frente al concepto clásico de “arte-terapia” nosotros proponemos el concepto de “práctica creativa” como más compatible con el modelo de “recuperación mutua”. Para ello, en primer lugar realizamos un breve repaso crítico a la relación del arte con la locura. Seguidamente, presentamos los conceptos hermanos de “recuperación” y “recuperación mutua” en el marco de lo que se ha venido a denominar las “health humanities”.     Prevalence and molecular epidemiology of bovine leukemia virus in Colombian cattle

    Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is one of the five agents considered most significant for cattle. It is important to determine the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of BLV throughout the country in order to gain a more thorough understanding of the current situation of BLV and to reveal the possibility of masked genotypes that the primers used by OIE are unable to identify. Blood samples were collected at random from 289 cows distributed in 75 farms across the country. PCR amplification of env, gag and tax gene segments was performed. The obtained amplicons were sequenced and then subjected to phylogenetic analyses. A total of 62% of the cows present at 92% of the farms were BLV-positive for gag fragment. Genotype 1 was exclusively detected by env gene segment when analyzed using previously reported primers. However, tax gene analysis revealed circulation of genotype 6 variants, which were also detected based on env gene analysis with newly designed primers. These results indicate that current genotyping approaches based on partial env sequencing may bias BLV genetic variability approaches and underestimate the diversity of the detected BLV genotypes. This report is one of the first molecular and epidemiological studies of BLV conducted in Colombia, which contributes to the global epidemiology of the virus; it also highlights the substantial impact of BLV on the country's livestock and thus is a useful resource for farmers and government entities

    Differential association between S100A4 levels and insulin resistance in prepubertal children and adult subjects with clinically severe obesity

    Objectives: S100A4 has been recently identified as an adipokine associated with insulin resistance (IR) in adult subjects with obesity. However, no data about its levels in children with obesity and only a few approaches regarding its potential mechanism of action have been reported. To obtain a deeper understanding of the role of S100A4 in obesity, (a) S100A4 levels were measured in prepubertal children and adult subjects with and without obesity and studied the relationship with IR and (b) the effects of S100A4 in cultured human adipocytes and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were determined. Methods: Sixty-five children (50 with obesity, age 9.0 ±1.1 years and 15 normal weight, age 8.4 ±0.8 years) and fifty-nine adults (43 with severe obesity, age 46 ±11 years and 16 normal weight, age 45 ±9 years) were included. Blood from children and adults and adipose tissue samples from adults were obtained and analysed. Human adipocytes and VSMC were incubated with S100A4 to evaluate their response to this adipokine. Results: Circulating S100A4 levels were increased in both children (P =.002) and adults (P <.001) with obesity compared with their normal-weight controls. In subjects with obesity, S100A4 levels were associated with homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in adults (βstd =.42, P =.008) but not in children (βstd =.12, P =.356). Human adipocytes were not sensitive to S100A4, while incubation with this adipokine significantly reduced inflammatory markers in VSMC. Conclusions: Our human data demonstrate that higher S100A4 levels are a marker of IR in adults with obesity but not in prepubertal children. Furthermore, the in vitro results suggest that S100A4 might exert an anti-inflammatory effect. Further studies will be necessary to determine whether S100A4 can be a therapeutic target for obesity

    Anosmin-1 over-expression increases adult neurogenesis in the subventricular zone and neuroblast migration to the olfactory bulb

    New subventricular zone (SVZ)-derived neuroblasts that migrate via the rostral migratory stream are continuously added to the olfactory bulb (OB) of the adult rodent brain. Anosmin-1 (A1) is an extracellular matrix protein that binds to FGF receptor 1 (FGFR1) to exert its biological effects. When mutated as in Kallmann syndrome patients, A1 is associated with severe OB morphogenesis defects leading to anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Here, we show that A1 over-expression in adult mice strongly increases proliferation in the SVZ, mainly with symmetrical divisions, and produces substantial morphological changes in the normal SVZ architecture, where we also report the presence of FGFR1 in almost all SVZ cells. Interestingly, for the first time we show FGFR1 expression in the basal body of primary cilia in neural progenitor cells. Additionally, we have found that A1 over-expression also enhances neuroblast motility, mainly through FGFR1 activity. Together, these changes lead to a selective increase in several GABAergic interneuron populations in different OB layers. These specific alterations in the OB would be sufficient to disrupt the normal processing of sensory information and consequently alter olfactory memory.     Threat of allergenic airborne grass pollen in Szczecin, NW Poland: the dynamics of pollen seasons, effect of meteorological variables and air pollution

    The dynamics of Poaceae pollen season, in particularly that of the Secale genus, in Szczecin (western Poland) 2004–2008 was analysed to establish a relationship between the meteorological variables, air pollution and the pollen count of the taxa studied. Consecutive phases during the pollen season were defined for each taxon (1, 2.5, 5, 25, 50, 75, 95, 97.5, 99% of annual total), and duration of the season was determined using the 98% method. On the basis of this analysis, the temporary differences in the dynamics of the seasons were most evident for Secale in 2005 and 2006 with the longest main pollen season (90% total pollen). The pollen season of Poaceae started the earliest in 2007, when thermal conditions were the most favourable. Correlation analysis with meteorological factors demonstrated that the relative humidity, mean and maximum air temperature, and rainfall were the factors influencing the average daily pollen concentrations in the atmosphere; also, the presence of air pollutants such as ozone, PM10 and SO2 was statistically related to the pollen count in the air.
