    Get PDF
Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma, composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females. This report describes case of co-existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10-year old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge. Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra and a mass in the left ovary. This was composed of a uniform whitish tissue with multiple cystic structures. The histology revealed an atrophy of the ovarian parenchyma, compressed by a proliferation of well-differentiated nervous tissue staining positively to vimentin, S100 and neuronal specific enolase (NSE), and negatively to keratin and inhibin. The left uterine horn, whose diameter was markedly increased, showed foci of endometrial cellular atypia, evident nucleoli and mitoses, at light microscopy. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a coexisting ovarian monophasic teratoma and endometrial adenocarcinoma, two rare reproductive neoplasia in dogs

As comunidades cristãs e a ação social: caminhos de reflexão e de prática

    Get PDF
It may be stated that there are occurrences in the social action of Christian communities: the paradox of informality and of institutional weight; the assistance of the laity; systemic complicity; impoverishment of social pastoral care; and certain blockages. These characteristics denote extraordinary potentials, which may be seen throughout history, and also certain limitations worthy of consideration. In order to make the most of the potentials and to overcome the limitations, the following lines of action seem recommendable: social action groups in all parishes; a social reception service in the parish institutions; qualification of the service of parish reception; organisation and management of Church institutions, in the light of the Church’s social doctrine; taking on and recognising lay identity; bringing about activity in Christian communities; coordination of parish social action; participation in the Parish Pastoral Council; integration in the social action of the Diocese; cooperation with non-Church entities; living in Christian brotherhood. Naturally each parish should adopt the kinds of action it regards as appropriate; it would be a considerable step forward if in every parish in the country, a social action group were to function, with representatives of all parts of the area that it covers.

Taking the perspectives of many people: Humanization matters

    Get PDF
In a busy space, people encounter many other people with different viewpoints, but classic studies of perspective-taking examine only one agent at a time. This paper explores the issue of selectivity in visual perspective-taking (VPT) when different people are available to interact with. We consider the hypothesis that humanization impacts on VPT in four studies using virtual reality methods. Experiments 1 and 2 use the director task to show that for more humanized agents (an in-group member or a virtual human agent), participants were more likely to use VPT to achieve lower error rate. Experiments 3 and 4 used a two-agent social mental rotation task to show that participants are faster and more accurate to recognize items which are oriented towards a more humanized agent (an in-group member or a naturally moving agent). All results support the claim that humanization alters the propensity to engage in VPT in rich social contexts

Efficient channel estimation using TCH codes

    Get PDF
In this paper, we consider the use of TCH codes to perform channel estimation in an OFDM system, using either data multiplexed pilots or superimposed pilots over the data. TCH codes possess several properties that allow us to use them efficiently in various applications which includes channel estimation, as we address in this paper. With this objective, several performance results were obtained through simulations which allowed the evaluation of the impact of different pilot power levels and modulations, as well as the comparison of TCH against other conventional pilots. In order to cope with the interference between pilots and data, an iterative receiver with interference suppression was employed for the superimposed pilots method.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Robust joint synchronization and channel estimation approach for frequency-selective environments

    Get PDF
Supporting spontaneous low-latency machine type communications requires fast synchronization and channel estimation at the receiver. The problems of synchronizing the received frame and estimating the channel coefficients are often addressed separately with the later one relying on accurate timing acquisition. While these conventional approaches can be adequate in flat fading environments, time dispersive channels can have a negative impact on both tasks and severely degrade the performance of the receiver. To circumvent this large degradation, in this paper we consider the use of a sparse based reconstruction approach for joint timing synchronization and channel estimation by formulating the problem in a form that is closely related to Compressive Sensing(CS) framework. Using modified versions of well-known sparse reconstruction techniques, which can take into account the additional signal structure in addition to sparsity, it is shown through numerical simulations that, even with short training sequences, excellent timing synchronization and channel estimation performance can be achieved, both in single user and multiuser scenarios.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Effect of bentonite characteristics on the elemental composition of wine

    Get PDF
Physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics of six bentonites were assessed and related to their elemental release to wine. Extraction essays of bentonites in wine at three pH levels were carried out. The multielemental analysis of bentonites and wines was performed by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Bentonite addition resulted in significantly higher concentrations of Li, Be, Na, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ga, Ge, As, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, W, Tl, Bi, and W. In contrast, the concentrations of B, K, Cu, Zn, and Rb significantly decreased. A strong correlation between Na concentrations of treated wines and its content in bentonite exchange complex was observed. Al and Fe contents reflected bentonite extractable aluminous and ferruginous constituents, while Be, Mg, Ca, V, Mn, Ni, Ge, Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Sb, Tl, Pb, and U concentrations reflected the elemental composition of bentonites. Several nonconformances with OIV specifications demonstrated the need for an effective control

The antimicrobial properties of Moringa oleifera Lam. for water treatment: a systematic review

Plant extracts have been used as alternatives to the conventional chemical water treatment. Moringa oleifera Lam. is one of the plants used for this purpose due to its antimicrobial and coagulant properties. However, there is no systematization of Moringa’s application methodology. Different parts of the plant, extraction methods and concentrations can be applied to remove several pathogens present in contaminated drinking water. In the present work, reported Moringa applications with antimicrobial effect were systematically reviewed, in order to identify effective methodology(ies) for water treatment. Forty-nine articles were screened for: (1) part of the plant used, (2) extraction method, (3) extract concentration, (4) targeted pathogens, and (5) inhibition zone obtained. Nine articles complied with these criteria and were carefully analyzed; eight of them reported on leaf extracts and only one on seed extracts. Two approaches were used: analysis by pathogen and overall analysis. A total of eight different extraction methods were reported. Extract concentrations used ranged from 0.02 to 800 mg mL−1 and were tested on twenty pathogens. Our analysis revealed that none of such methods is effective against all the tested pathogens. However, leaf extracts obtained with distilled water or with 95% ethanol were the most effective ones for a higher number of pathogens such as Escherichia coli and, possibly, Vibrio cholerae. Moreover, Moringa’s extract concentration of 30 mg mL−1 obtained by the 95% ethanol extraction method was the most efficient. Findings suggest an effective procedure to use Moringa, reinforcing its importance as an environmentally friendly alternative for water treatment in areas lacking a water supply system.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A cognition-driven risk evaluation framework for consumer loans

    Get PDF
Credit to personal consumption is an important activity of the financial system and crucial to the socio-economic development of a country. It is important, therefore, that the methods and techniques used to evaluate consumer credit risk be as efficient and informative as possible, in order to strengthen decisions to approve or reject credit and promote sustainable economic growth. This study aims to create a multiple criteria expert system which integrates cognitive maps and the measuring attractiveness by a categorical based evaluation technique (MACBETH) to create a complementary framework for consumer credit risk assessment. The results show that this integrated approach allows the evaluation process of consumer credit risk to be more informed and transparent, providing value for the evaluation processes of this type of credit application as a result of the privileged contact established with a panel of credit analysts. Limitations and managerial implications are also discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
