Standardised surface electromyography allows effective submental muscles assessment
The aims of this pilot study were to evaluate: (i) the reproducibility and variability of an electromyographical protocol developed for the assessment of submental muscles (SM) (ii) to apply the new protocol to maximal teeth clenching, a simple and largely studied static task in order to quantify the relative contribution of submental muscles. In 20 healthy subjects, aged 19-35years, surface electromyography of SM, masseter (MM) and anterior temporalis (TA) muscles was performed during maximal voluntary clenching (MVC) with and without cotton rolls and the pushing of the tongue against the palate. Clenching on cotton rolls and pushing the tongue against the palate were used to standardise respectively MM and TA, and SM muscular potentials. The exercises were repeated in two appointments (T1-T2); submental muscles standardisation was also repeated twice (A-B) in each session to assess repeatability. Symmetry and activity were calculated for each couple of muscles. A two-way analysis of variance was computed for SM: no Factor 1 (T1 vs T2) or Factor 2 (A vs B) or F1
7F2 significant effects were found. SM recruitment was 31% of the maximal activity, with symmetry values larger than 80%. In conclusion, standardised electromyography allows a reliable assessment of Submental muscles activity
Massive Star cluster formation under the microscope at z=6
We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R_e)
smaller than 13 pc identified at z=6.143 and showing a star-formation rate
density \Sigma_SFR~1000 Msun/yr/kpc2 (or conservatively >300 Msun/yr/kpc2).
Such a dense region is detected with S/N>40 hosted by a dwarf extending over
440 pc, dubbed D1 (Vanzella et al. 2017b). D1 is magnified by a factor
17.4+/-5.0 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and
elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2+/-4.0 (including the systematic
errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed
multiple images with a r.m.s. of 0.35", and the tangential stretch is well
depicted by a giant multiply-imaged Lya arc. D1 is part of an interacting
star-forming complex extending over 800 pc. The SED-fitting, the very blue
ultraviolet slope (\beta ~ -2.5, F(\lambda) ~ \lambda^\beta) and the prominent
Lya emission of the stellar complex imply that very young (< 10-100 Myr),
moderately dust-attenuated (E(B-V)<0.15) stellar populations are present and
organised in dense subcomponents. We argue that D1 (with a stellar mass of 2 x
10^7 Msun) might contain a young massive star cluster of M < 10^6 Msun and
Muv~-15.6 (or m_uv=31.1), confined within a region of 13 pc, and not dissimilar
from some local super star clusters (SSCs). The ultraviolet appearance of D1 is
also consistent with a simulated local dwarf hosting a SSC placed at z=6 and
lensed back to the observer. This compact system fits into some popular
globular cluster formation scenarios. We show that future high spatial
resolution imaging (e.g., E-ELT/MAORY-MICADO and VLT/MAVIS) will allow us to

Discovery of a faint, star-forming, multiply lensed, Lyman-alpha blob
We report the discovery of a multiply lensed Lyman- blob (LAB) behind
the galaxy cluster AS1063 using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on
the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The background source is at 3.117 and is
intrinsically faint compared to almost all previously reported LABs. We used
our highly precise strong lensing model to reconstruct the source properties,
and we find an intrinsic luminosity of =
erg s, extending to 33 kpc. We find that the LAB is associated with a
group of galaxies, and possibly a protocluster, in agreement with previous
studies that find LABs in overdensities. In addition to Lyman-
(Ly) emission, we find \ion{C}{IV}, \ion{He}{II}, and \ion{O}{III}]
ultraviolet (UV) emission lines arising from the centre of the nebula. We used
the compactness of these lines in combination with the line ratios to conclude
that the \Lya nebula is likely powered by embedded star formation. Resonant
scattering of the \Lya photons then produces the extended shape of the
emission. Thanks to the combined power of MUSE and strong gravitational
lensing, we are now able to probe the circumgalatic medium of sub-

Low energy n-\nuc{3}{H} scattering : a novel testground for nuclear interaction
The low energy n-\nuc{3}{H} elastic cross sections near the resonance peak
are calculated by solving the 4-nucleon problem with realistic NN interactions.
Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Shandas (AGS), Hyperspherical
Harmonics and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been used and their respective results
are compared. We conclude on a failure of the existing NN forces to reproduce
the n-\nuc{3}{H} total cross section.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev.
Demography of obscured and unobscured AGN: prospects for a Wide Field X-ray Telescope

Hybrid Rules with Well-Founded Semantics
A general framework is proposed for integration of rules and external first
order theories. It is based on the well-founded semantics of normal logic
programs and inspired by ideas of Constraint Logic Programming (CLP) and
constructive negation for logic programs. Hybrid rules are normal clauses
extended with constraints in the bodies; constraints are certain formulae in
the language of the external theory. A hybrid program is a pair of a set of
hybrid rules and an external theory. Instances of the framework are obtained by
specifying the class of external theories, and the class of constraints. An
example instance is integration of (non-disjunctive) Datalog with ontologies
formalized as description logics.
The paper defines a declarative semantics of hybrid programs and a
goal-driven formal operational semantics. The latter can be seen as a
generalization of SLS-resolution. It provides a basis for hybrid
implementations combining Prolog with constraint solvers. Soundness of the
operational semantics is proven. Sufficient conditions for decidability of the
declarative semantics, and for completeness of the operational semantics are
given
Proton-He elastic scattering at low energies
We present new accurate measurements of the differential cross section
and the proton analyzing power for proton-He
elastic scattering at various energies. A supersonic gas jet target has been
employed to obtain these low energy cross section measurements. The
distributions have been measured at = 0.99, 1.59,
2.24, 3.11, and 4.02 MeV. Full angular distributions of have been
measured at = 1.60, 2.25, 3.13, and 4.05 MeV. This set of
high-precision data is compared to four-body variational calculations employing
realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) interactions. For the
unpolarized cross section the agreement between the theoretical calculation and
data is good when a potential is used. The comparison between the
calculated and measured proton analyzing powers reveals discrepancies of
approximately 50% at the maximum of each distribution. This is analogous to the
existing `` Puzzle'' known for the past 20 years in nucleon-deuteron

A highly-ionized region surrounding SN Refsdal revealed by MUSE
Supernova (SN) Refsdal is the first multiply-imaged, highly-magnified, and
spatially-resolved SN ever observed. The SN exploded in a highly-magnified
spiral galaxy at z=1.49 behind the Frontier Fields Cluster MACS1149, and
provides a unique opportunity to study the environment of SNe at high z. We
exploit the time delay between multiple images to determine the properties of
the SN and its environment, before, during, and after the SN exploded. We use
the integral-field spectrograph MUSE on the VLT to simultaneously target all
observed and model-predicted positions of SN Refsdal. We find MgII emission at
all positions of SN Refsdal, accompanied by weak FeII* emission at two
positions. The measured ratios of [OII] to MgII emission of 10-20 indicate a
high degree of ionization with low metallicity. Because the same high degree of
ionization is found in all images, and our spatial resolution is too coarse to
resolve the region of influence of SN Refsdal, we conclude that this high
degree of ionization has been produced by previous SNe or a young and hot
stellar population. We find no variability of the [OII] line over a period of
57 days. This suggests that there is no variation in the [OII] luminosity of
the SN over this period, or that the SN has a small contribution to the
integrated [OII] emission over the scale resolved by our observations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Three-dimensional assessment of nose and lip morphology in North Sudanese subjects with Down syndrome
Objective: To detail the nasolabial morphologic characteristics of North Sudanese subjects with Down syndrome (DS).
Materials and Methods: Nasolabial morphology was assessed three-dimensionally in 64 North Sudanese subjects with DS aged 4 to 34 years and in 682 sex- and age-matched controls. Three-dimensional facial coordinates were collected using a laser scan, and selected distances, angles, areas, and volumes were computed. Subject and reference data were compared by computing z-scores and Student's t-tests.
Results: The nose was significantly smaller (area) in subjects with DS than in reference subjects, and it had a different shape (more flat angle of alar slope, more acute nasal tip angle). The vertical (nasal bridge length, nose height) and anteroposterior (nasal tip protrusion) dimensions were reduced, while the horizontal dimensions (alar base width, inferior widths of the nostrils) were increased. The nasolabial angle was increased. The cutaneous lip volume was significantly smaller, while the vermilion lip area was larger in the subjects with DS. The mouth and philtrum widths were significantly reduced, while the vermilion height was significantly increased.
Conclusion: Analyzed subjects with DS had a hypoplastic nose and different upper and lower lips than did reference, normal subjects. (Angle Orthod. 2011;81:107-114.
