The Stellar Composition of the Star Formation Region CMa R1. II. Spectroscopic and Photometric Observations of 9 Young Stars
We present new high and low resolution spectroscopic and photometric data of
nine members of the young association CMa R1. All the stars have circumstellar
dust at some distance as could be expected from their association with
reflection nebulosity. Four stars (HD 52721, HD 53367, LkHalpha 220 and
LkHalpha 218) show Halpha emission and we argue that they are Herbig Be stars
with discs. Our photometric and spectroscopic observations on these stars
reveal new characteristics of their variability. We present first
interpretations of the variability of HD 52721, HD 53367 and the two LkHalpha
stars in terms of a partially eclipsing binary, a magnetic activity cycle and
circumstellar dust variations, respectively. The remaining five stars show no
clear indications of Halpha emission in their spectra, although their spectral
types and ages are comparable with those of HD 52721 and HD 53367. This
indicates that the presence of a disc around a star in CMa R1 may depend on the
environment of the star. In particular we find that all Halpha emission stars
are located at or outside the arc-shaped border of the H II region, which
suggests that the stars inside the arc have lost their discs through
evaporation by UV photons from nearby O stars, or from the nearby (< 25 pc)
supernova, about 1 Myr ago.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted by MNRA
Gal4 turnover and transcription activation
Growing evidence supports the notion that proteasome-mediated destruction of transcriptional activators can be intimately coupled to their function. Recently, Nalley et al. challenged this view by reporting that the prototypical yeast activator Gal4 does not dynamically associate with chromatin, but rather 'locks in' to stable promoter complexes that are resistant to competition. Here we present evidence that the assay used to reach this conclusion is unsuitable, and that promoter-bound, active Gal4 is indeed susceptible to competition in vivo. Our data challenge the key evidence that Nalley et al. used to reach their conclusion, and indicate that Gal4 functions in vivo within the context of dynamic promoter complexes
Nanostructured water-phosphorite suspension is a new promising fertilizer

A rival import-substituting biosafe nanofertilizer, a nanostructured water-phosphorite suspension with a particle size of 60.0-120.0 nm, has been obtained for the first time from the natural raw phosphorite of Tatarstan’s Syundyukovskoe deposits by ultrasonic material dispersion. The nanofertilizer is shown to have no acute phytotoxicity against nine test plants at the rates of 0.25-10.0 kg per ton of seeds and no toxic or mutagenic properties against the microbiological test system at concentrations of 0.2-200.0 μg/mL. In greenhouse, field, and farm-scale trials of agricultural crops under open and protected ground conditions, different methods and rates of nanofertilizer application are studied to show the high efficiency of the nanostructrured water-phosphorite suspension upon soil fertilization at a rate of 1.0 t/ha and presowing treatment of seeds at a rate of 1.25 kg/t of seeds. It is established that the morphometric indices of plants increases from 8.3% to 3.5-fold, the fresh yield increases from 2.4% to 2.2-fold, and the fruit yield increases from 14.5 to 24.1%. The improvement in crop production quality by a set of indices from 0.3% to 2.6-fold was noted
The Stellar Composition of the Star Formation Region CMa R1 -- III. A new outburst of the Be star component in Z CMa
We report on a recent event in which, after more than a decade of slowly
fading, the visual brightness of the massive young binary Z CMa suddenly
started to rise by about 1 magnitude in December 1999, followed by a rapid
decline to its previous brightness over the next six months. This behaviour is
similar to that exhibited by this system around its eruption in February 1987.
A comparison of the intrinsic luminosities of the system with recent
evolutionary calculations shows that Z CMa may consist of a 16 M_sun B0 IIIe
primary star and a ~ 3 M_sun FUOr secondary with a common age of ~ 3 x 10^5 yr.
We also compare new high-resolution spectra obtained in Jan. and Feb. 2000,
during the recent rise in brightness, with archive data from 1991 and 1996. The
spectra are rich in emission lines, which originate from the envelope of the
early B-type primary star. The strength of these emission lines increased
strongly with the brightness of Z CMa. We interpret the collected spectral data
in terms of an accretion disc with atmosphere around the Herbig B0e component
of Z CMa, which has expanded during the outbursts of 1987 and 2000. A high
resolution profile of the 6300 A [O I] emission line, obtained by us in March
2002 shows an increase in flux and a prominent blue shoulder to the feature
extending to ~ -700 km/s, which was much fainter in the pre-outburst spectra.
We propose that this change in profile is a result of a strong change in the
collimation of a jet, as a result of the outburst at the start of this century.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Development of 'synthetic lethal' strategies to target BRCA1-deficient breast cancer
Recent clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors for the treatment of BRCA1-deficient breast cancer have provided support for the 'synthetic lethal' concept of targeted cancer therapeutics. A new study provides further preclinical validation of this concept by demonstrating that BRCA1-deficient mouse mammary tumor cells are selectively sensitive to an inhibitor of the polycomb gene EZH2. The development of polycomb gene inhibitors may provide a novel approach to selectively exploit the molecular alterations in BRCA1-deficient breast tumors
Time delay between images of the lensed quasar UM673
We study brightness variations in the double lensed quasar UM673 (Q0142-100)
with the aim of measuring the time delay between its two images. In the paper
we combine our previously published observational data of UM673 obtained during
the 2003 - 2005 seasons at the Maidanak Observatory with archival and recently
observed Maidanak and CTIO UM673 data. We analyze the V, R and I-band light
curves of the A and B images of UM673, which cover ten observational seasons
from August 2001 to November 2010. We also analyze the time evolution of the
difference in magnitudes between images A and B of UM673 over more than ten
years. We find that the quasar exhibits both short-term (with amplitude of \sim
0.1 mag in the R band) and high-amplitude (\sim 0.3 mag) long-term variability
on timescales of about several months and several years, respectively. These
brightness variations are used to constrain the time delay between the images
of UM673. From cross-correlation analysis of the A and B quasar light curves
and error analysis we measure the mean time delay and its error of 89 \pm11
days. Given the input time delay of 88 days, the most probable value of the
delay that can be recovered from light curves with the same statistical
properties as the observed R-band light curves of UM673 is 95{+5/-16}{+14/-29}
days (68 and 95 % confidence intervals). Analysis of the V - I color variations
and V, R and I-band magnitude differences of the quasar images does not show
clear evidence of the microlensing variations between 1998 and 2010.Comment: Submitted to A&A, 11 pages, 9 figure
Production of nano-bentonite and the study of its effect on mutagenesis in bacteria Salmonella typhimurium
© 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.The production of nano-bentonite and its effects on mutation process in the strains of Salmonella typhimurium are studied. It is revealed that nano-bentonite particles essentially differ from bentonite particles in structure, size, and shape. Bentonite particles are cone-shaped and 0.3 to 1.0 μm in size, whereas nanobentonite nanoparticles are oval-shaped and 25 to 95 μm in size. Single particles (less than 10.0%) are irregular polyhedra and 0.6 μm in size. The structure of bentonite consists of separate fragments of constituent minerals composed of packages–lamelee 0.6 μm in size cemented with an amorphous mass. An amorphous mass containing single micrometer-sized packages–lamelee is observed in the structure of the nano-bentonite. It is determined that nano-bentonite does not possess mutagenic activity on microorganisms. The study of antimutagenic potential of nano-bentonite reveals that it possesses a moderate inhibitory effect on mutagenesis caused by mitomycin C, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, and ethyl methanesulphonate, but does not inhibit genotoxic potential of hydrogen peroxide. The results demonstrate that nano-bentonite is nongenotoxic and can be used for the development of next-generation safe nanotechnological materials
Steps Toward Determination of the Size and Structure of the Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei. XVI. A Thirteen-Year Study of Spectral Variability in NGC 5548
We present the final installment of an intensive 13-year study of variations
of the optical continuum and broad H-beta emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy
NGC 5548. The data base consists of 1530 optical continuum measurements and
1248 H-beta measurements. The H-beta variations follow the continuum variations
closely, with a typical time delay of about 20 days. However, a year-by-year
analysis shows that the magnitude of emission-line time delay is correlated
with the mean continuum flux. We argue that the data are consistent with the
simple model prediction that the size of the broad-line region is proportional
to the square root of the ionizing luminosity. Moreover, the apparently linear
nature of the correlation between the H-beta response time and the nonstellar
optical continuum arises as a consequence of the changing shape of the
continuum as it varies, specifically with the optical (5100 A) continuum
luminosity proportional to the ultraviolet (1350 A) continuum luminosity to the
