Factors that affect help-seeking: Examining racial differences between Whites, Asians, and African Americans

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that impact intentions to seek mental health services as well as to explore how they may vary based on race. A total of 172 participants were asked to fill out questions that measured variables related to help-seeking. Results indicated that Asians had significantly higher levels of self-stigma, lower levels of benefits of self-disclosure, and lower intentions to seek help than both Whites and African Americans. Multiple regression analyses showed that self-stigma was a significant predictor of intentions for all three groups, while benefits of self-disclosure was only significant for Whites and Asians. The model was found to be most predictive for Asians and least predictive for African Americans

Assessment of dried blood spots for multi-mycotoxin biomarker analysis in pigs and broiler chickens

Dried blood spots (DBSs), a micro-sampling technique whereby a drop of blood is collected on filter paper has multiple advantages over conventional blood sampling regarding the sampling itself, as well as transportation and storage. This is the first paper describing the development and validation of a method for the determination of 23 mycotoxins and phase I metabolites in DBSs from pigs and broiler chickens using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The targeted mycotoxins belong to groups for which the occurrence in feed is regulated by the European Union, namely, aflatoxins, ochratoxin A and several Fusarium mycotoxins, and to two groups of unregulated mycotoxins, namely Alternaria mycotoxins and Fusarium mycotoxins (enniatins and beauvericin). The impact of blood haematocrit, DBS sampling volume and size of the analysed DBS disk on the validation results was assessed. No effects of variation in size of the analysed disk, haematocrit and spotted blood volume were observed for most mycotoxins, except for the aflatoxins and beta-zearalanol (BZAL) at the lowest haematocrit (26%) level and for the enniatins (ENNs) at the lowest volume (40 mu L). The developed method was transferred to an LC-high resolution mass spectrometry instrument to determine phase II metabolites. Then, the DBS technique was applied in a proof-of-concept toxicokinetic study including a comparison with LC-MS/MS data from plasma obtained with conventional venous blood sampling. A strong correlation (r > 0.947) was observed between plasma and DBS concentrations. Finally, DBSs were also applied in a pilot exposure assessment study to test their applicability under field conditions

When Combined with Colistin, an Otherwise Ineffective Rifampicin-Linezolid Combination Becomes Active in Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii

The synergistic action of colistin, with two antibiotics active in Gram-positive bacteria but unable to kill gram negatives (linezolid and rifampicin), was investigated, since triple combinations are emerging as a tool to overtake multidrug resistance. Checkerboard determinations demonstrated that, when combined with colistin, the combination of linezolid and rifampicin turns active in multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Thus, the presence of sublethal concentrations of colistin resulted in a strongly synergistic interaction between these two drugs. Moreover, the minimum inhibitory concentrations of linezolid-rifampicin combinations in the presence of colistin were lower than the maximal concentrations of these antimicrobials ain blood. These findings suggest the use of this triple combination as an effective treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections

Microglial Corpse Clearance: Lessons From Macrophages

From development to aging and disease, the brain parenchyma is under the constant threat of debris accumulation, in the form of dead cells and protein aggregates. To prevent garbage buildup, the brain is equipped with efficient phagocytes: the microglia. Microglia are similar, but not identical to other tissue macrophages, and in this review, we will first summarize the differences in the origin, lineage and population maintenance of microglia and macrophages. Then, we will discuss several principles that govern macrophage phagocytosis of apoptotic cells (efferocytosis), including the existence of redundant recognition mechanisms ("find-me" and "eat-me") that lead to a tight coupling between apoptosis and phagocytosis. We will then describe that resulting from engulfment and degradation of apoptotic cargo, phagocytes undergo an epigenetic, transcriptional and metabolic rewiring that leads to trained immunity, and discuss its relevance for microglia and brain function. In summary, we will show that neuroimmunologists can learn many lessons from the well-developed field of macrophage phagocytosis biology. This work was supported by grants from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with FEDER funds (BFU2015-66689 and RYC-2013-12817), a Basque Government Department of Education project (PI_2016_1_0011), and a Fundacion Tatiana Perez de Guzman el Bueno project (P-048-FTPGB 2018) to AS. In recent years there has been an increase in the production and use of documentary films of musical genres in the international sphere. This is evidenced by the list of winners of one of the most prestigious awards in world cinema: The Academy Awards. Over less than a decade, three films of this genre have succeeded in winning the award for Best Feature Documentary: Searching for Sugar Man in 2013, Amy, the Girl Behind the Name in 2014 and 20 Steps to Stardom in 2016. In this research, the three films have been studied in an investigation using the method of content analysis, which allows us to understand the real relevance given to the music in these films and to understand the topics and subtopics in the discourse of the films in order to get to know their story. This research concludes that the musical quality of the characters and their personal environment are the determining elements of the stories analysed, provided that the peculiarities of each story are considered.Departamento de Historia Moderna, Contemporánea y de América, Periodismo y Comunicación Audiovisual y PublicidadGrado en Periodism
