Kernel alignment for identifying objective criteria from brain MEG recordings in schizophrenia

The current wide access to data from different neuroimaging techniques has permitted to obtain data to explore the possibility of finding objective criteria that can be used for diagnostic purposes. In order to decide which features of the data are relevant for the diagnostic task, we present in this paper a simple method for feature selection based on kernel alignment with the ideal kernel in support vector machines (SVM). The method presented shows state-of-the-art performance while being more efficient than other methods for feature selection in SVM. It is also less prone to overfitting due to the properties of the alignment measure. All these abilities are essential in neuroimaging study, where the number of features representing recordings is usually very large compared with the number of recordings. The method has been applied to a dataset in order to determine objective criteria for the diagnosis of schizophrenia. The dataset analyzed has been obtained from multichannel magnetoencephalogram (MEG) recordings, corresponding to the recordings during the performance of a mismatch negativity (MMN) auditory task by a set of schizophrenia patients and a control group. All signal frequency bands are analyzed (from d (1–4 Hz) to high frequency ¿ (60–200 Hz)) and the signal correlations among the different sensors for these frequencies are used as features.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Effects of customer knowledge management and customer orientation on innovation capacity and marketing results in SMEs: the mediating role of innovation orientation

    No full text
Managing customer knowledge is a key of source for SMEs. The principal aim of this paper is to provide empirical evidence on the direct effects of two specific strategic resources: customer orientation and customer knowledge management (CKM), on innovation capacity and marketing results in SMEs. The study also examines the role of innovation orientation as a mediator between customer orientation and CKM. For this purpose, a structural model was proposed and tested through an empirical investigation with variance-based structural equation modeling (PLS) using a sample made up of 210 Spanish SMEs. The findings highlight the relevance of CKM and customer orientation as important strategic resources for developing innovation capacity and marketing results, and they confirm the mediation effect of innovation orientation. Empirical evidence supports the importance of customer orientation and CKM in boosting innovation and performance. These findings have important implications for performance in SMEs

From the literature review and technical analysis regarding the concept and the legal and political influence exerted by the “friendship” in international relations, it will be seek to implement that “corpus” to the consideration of Argentine-Chilean overall bilateral ties, and referred specifically to the issue of “Southern Ice Field” or “Continental Ice”, and finally outline a proposal for the exercise, after being met a number of paces of shared sovereignty in that geographical area, in the form of international condominium, considering that despite the 1998 Treaty was signed, to date it has not been possible to demarcate a part of the territory covered by the agreement, a fact that conspires against the sustainability of the area under discussion, obstructing the matrix of “strategic friendship” that the parties opened in 1984, to resolve the conflict of the Beagle.

Olive oil and health: Summary of the II international conference on olive oil and health consensus report, Jaén and Córdoba (Spain) 2008

Olive oil (OO) is the most representative food of the traditional Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet). Increasing evidence suggests that monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) as a nutrient, OO as a food, and the MedDiet as a food pattern are associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. A MedDiet rich in OO and OO per se has been shown to improve cardiovascular risk factors, such as lipid profiles, blood pressure, postprandial hyperlipidemia, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and antithrombotic profiles. Some of these beneficial effects can be attributed to the OO minor components. Therefore, the definition of the MedDiet should include OO. Phenolic compounds in OO have shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, prevent lipoperoxidation, induce favorable changes of lipid profile, improve endothelial function, and disclose antithrombotic properties. Observational studies from Mediterranean cohorts have suggested that dietary MUFA may be protective against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. Recent studies consistently support the concept that the OO-rich MedDiet is compatible with healthier aging and increased longevity. In countries where the population adheres to the MedDiet, such as Spain, Greece and Italy, and OO is the principal source of fat, rates of cancer incidence are lower than in northern European countries. Experimental and human cellular studies have provided new evidence on the potential protective effect of OO on cancer. Furthermore, results of case-control and cohort studies suggest that MUFA intake including OO is associated with a reduction in cancer risk (mainly breast, colorectal and prostate cancers).CIBEROBN is an initiative of ISCIII and CEAS Foundation, Spain.Peer reviewe
