    How much you know matters: A note on the exchange rate disconnect puzzle

    This paper offers a dynamic model of the foreign exchange market where some investors in the market are more informed than others. By adjusting the proportion of informed investors in the market, it is shown that the disconnect between macroeconomic variables and the exchange rate is sensitive to the amount of asymmetric information in the market. A surprising fi�nding is that this disconnect is bigger when the proportion of informed investors in the market is smaller

    Analysis Of Intramuscular Injectıons Admınıstered In A Family Health Center

    Objectives: In this study, the objective was to evaluate the intramuscular injections administered to patients admitted to a family health center with sociodemographic characteristics. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, analytical and, retrospective file review study. The sample population was formed by patients who had intramuscular injections administered between the dates of January 01, 2017 - and December 31, 2019. A total of 5648 injections for 2059 adults/children were evaluated. The data set was analyzed using SPSS 17.0 (IBM, USA) statistical package program. Results: An average of 2.74 injections per person was administered. The rate of myorelaxant injection administration was higher among women (p<0.001), and the rate of antibiotic and analgesic + myorelaxant injection administrations was higher among men (p<0.001 for both). With the increase of age, the rate of analgesic injection administrations increases (p<0.001) and the rate of antibiotic injection administrations decreases (p<0.001). The highest analgesic + myorelaxant injection administration rate was during autumn, and the lowest was during winter (p=0.001). Conclusion: The results showed that the frequency of analgesic, myorelaxant, antibiotic, steroid, vitamin/mineral, hormone and combination drugs used for intramuscular injection were affected by demographic variables such as age, gender and season. Identifying family health center dynamics may contribute to creating rational health policies. © Ankara Medical Journal.All rights reserved

    Automated discrimination of psychotropic drugs in mice via computer vision-based analysis

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.We developed an inexpensive computer vision-based method utilizing an algorithm which differentiates drug-induced behavioral alterations. The mice were observed in an open-field arena and their activity was recorded for 100 min. For each animal the first 50 min of observation were regarded as the drug-free period. Each animal was exposed to only one drug and they were injected (i.p.) with either amphetamine or cocaine as the stimulant drugs or morphine or diazepam as the inhibitory agents. The software divided the arena into virtual grids and calculated the number of visits (sojourn counts) to the grids and instantaneous speeds within these grids by analyzing video data. These spatial distributions of sojourn counts and instantaneous speeds were used to construct feature vectors which were fed to the classifier algorithms for the final step of matching the animals and the drugs. The software decided which of the animals were drug-treated at a rate of 96%. The algorithm achieved 92% accuracy in sorting the data according to the increased or decreased activity and then determined which drug was delivered. The method differentiated the type of psychostimulant or inhibitory drugs with a success ratio of 70% and 80%, respectively.     Outcomes of high-risk breast lesions diagnosed using image-guided core needle biopsy: results from a multicenter retrospective study

    PURPOSEThe clinical management of high-risk lesions using image-guided biopsy is challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the rates at which such lesions were upgraded to malignancy and identify possible predictive factors for upgrading high-risk lesions.METHODSThis retrospective multicenter analysis included 1.343 patients diagnosed with high-risk lesions using an image-guided core needle or vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB). Only patients managed using an excisional biopsy or with at least one year of documented radiological follow-up were included. For each, the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category, number of samples, needle thickness, and lesion size were correlated with malignancy upgrade rates in different histologic subtypes. Pearson’s chi-squared test, the Fisher–Freeman–Halton test, and Fisher’s exact test were used for the statistical analyses.RESULTSThe overall upgrade rate was 20.6%, with the highest rates in the subtypes of intraductal papilloma (IP) with atypia (44.7%; 55/123), followed by atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) (38.4%; 144/375), lobular neoplasia (LN) (12.7%; 7/55), papilloma without atypia (9.4%; 58/611), flat epithelial atypia (FEA) (8.7%; 10/114), and radial scars (RSs) (4.6%; 3/65). There was a significant relationship between the upgrade rate and BI-RADS category, number of samples, and lesion size Lesion size was the most predictive factor for an upgrade in all subtypes.CONCLUSIONADH and atypical IP showed considerable upgrade rates to malignancy, requiring surgical excision. The LN, IP without atypia, pure FEA, and RS subtypes showed lower malignancy rates when the BI-RADS category was lower and in smaller lesions that had been adequately sampled using VAB. After being discussed in a multidisciplinary meeting, these cases could be managed with follow-up instead of excision

    Modelling and experimental performance analysis of solar assisted ground source heat pump system

    In this study, slinky (the slinky-loop configuration is also known as the coiled loop or spiral loop of flexible plastic pipe)type ground heat exchanger (GHE) was established for a solar-assisted ground source heat pump system. System modelling is performed with the data obtained from the experiment. Artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) are used in modelling. The slinky pipes have been laid horizontally and vertically in a ditch. The system coefficient of performance (COPsys) and the heat pump coefficient of performance (COPhp) have been calculated as 2.88 and 3.55, respectively, at horizontal slinky-type GHE, while COPsys and COPhp were calculated as 2.34 and 2.91, respectively, at vertical slinky-type GHE. The obtained results showed that the ANFIS is more successful than that of ANN for forecasting performance of a solar ground source heat pump system

    Exploring Commodity Trading Activity: An Integrated Analysis of Swaps and Futures

    This paper provides the first public analysis of a cross-section of physical commodity swap markets using proprietary position data collected by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. We find that futures markets are generally larger than swaps markets, as measured by open interest, with WTI crude oil being an exception. By merging data on futures, swaps, and index swaps, we gauge exposures for various types of market participants, products, and tenors across the entire US WTI derivatives market for the first time. We find that, in aggregate, market participants appear to use futures and swaps in tandem – Financial End-Users and Commercial End-Users both have net positions in swaps in the same direction as their net positions in futures. Swap dealers appear to have offsetting swaps and futures net positions. To illustrate the joint nature of these markets, we contrast Working’s T index computed from both futures and swaps data with the index computed solely from futures or swaps. We find that the combined index differs substantially from the index computed using either the futures or swaps data alone, highlighting the potentially incomplete nature of any analysis done using only futures or swaps market data

    The Effect of Pit Closure on Futures Trading

    Motivated by CME’s decision to close down most of the futures pits in July of 2015, we analyze the changes in a number of important CME futures markets between 2012 and 2016. We find that although futures pit trading has been diminished to very low levels, it has not completely disappeared. While we do not have evidence of futures pit traders transitioning to the electronic market, we see that some futures pit traders are still active in options pit markets. When we explore the changes in daily trading patterns, we observe a shift in the timing of trading hours for a few select markets. In terms of execution costs, we do not observe any definitive effect of the pit closures on execution costs for most commodities in the electronic market. However, effective spreads for random length lumber futures appear to increase around the time of the announcement of the pit closures. A similar effect is observed for trading strategies in treasury futures during the roll periods

    Determination of Odds in Prediction Markets: Coexistence of Posted-offer and Double-auction Designs

    This paper studies the coexistence of two competing mechanisms in the same market, where one follows the posted-offer rule and the other one incorporates a double-auction mechanism. We explore this coexistence within a sports betting example in which bettors are free to choose between a bookie (posted-offer market) and a betting exchange. Our findings imply that i) bettors' risk aversion parameter is instrumental in whether these two mechanisms coexist or not, ii) most bettors are strictly better off, and none is worse off, when they have access to both of these competing mechanisms rather than just one, and iii) these results hold even when we allow the bookie to make a positive profit instead of following a zero expected profit pricing rule

    Is Pit Closure Costly for Customers? A Case of Livestock Futures

    Motivated by CME’s decision to close down most of the futures pits in July of 2015, we analyze the changes in the livestock futures market between 2014 and 2016. The livestock futures market, which had an active presence at the pit prior to the closure, has recently exhibited unprecedented price fluctuations. A simultaneous increase in the bid ask spread has raised concerns over the availability or liquidity in this market. The focus of our study is to analyze whether liquidity has changed for customer orders after the futures pit closed. In more detail, we track customer orders and evaluate their execution quality. We investigate whether execution costs for such trades have increased after the futures pits closed. In addition, we also examine whether customers have changed their trading behavior by placing more aggressive orders
