Drawing on different primary sources this article analyses the impact of captivity on the configuration of the frontier society between the south-eastern region of the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb at the beginning of the sixteenth century. More specifically, it shows how a wide array of actors (from the crown to humble citizens, from military authorities to members of minorities, etcetera) made use of this phenomenon as a means to negotiatetheir power position in the social fabric of this Mediterranean frontier. In this manner, captivity appears as a key factor in the internal configuration of this society, rather than as a mere expression of the clash of civilizations that use to characterise the Mediterranean world of the Early Modern period

After the fallen of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada (1492), Antequera left behind his status as frontier city. Shortly after, Pamplona acquired such a condition due to the conquest of Navarre (1521-1521), and the fierce rivalry between the Spanish and French kings. Both transformations took place during a period when the system to distribute the burden of war among the multiple parts of the Hispanic Monarchy was taking shape. While the former witnessed an astonishing rise of costs to pay when it lost the status as a frontier city, the former, on the contrary, began to enjoy a privileged status deriving from its new condition as one of the bulwarks defending the empire. A comparative history of both cities during the opening decades of the sixteenth century shows to what extent they followed divergent paths in the redistribution of the war costs. This allows us to measure the political price of the frontier according to the logics ruling the funding of imperial warfare and defence in the Spanish Empire during the first half of the sixteenth century.

Multivariate analysis of sensory data of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Graciano during ripening. Correlation with the phenolic composition of the grape skins

    Get PDF
The aim of this work was to evaluate sensory changes in grape skins during ripening and to obtain a correlation with their phenolic composition. Flavan-3-ols (monomers and dimers), prodelphinidins, hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, anthocyanins and flavonols were determined by HPLC-DAD-MS. In addition, skin dilaceration, tannic intensity, astringency, acidity, aroma intensity (AI) and type of aroma were evaluated. Multivariate analysis showed the evolution of these samples during ripening and the relationship among sensory scores and phenolic composition of grapes skins. Skin dilaceration, type of aroma and to a lesser extent AI tend to increase during ripening. The contents in the phenolic compounds in grape skins present a similar pattern to the aforementioned sensory parameters. Nevertheless, tannic intensity, astringency, dryness and acidity present an opposite pattern which indicates a decrease of these sensory scores during ripening.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación AGL2008-05569-C02-01Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Programme CSD2007-0006

About Rulers and Debt. A Decade of Historiographical Production on Habsburg Castile

    Get PDF
The economic, political, financial and social crisis that broke out in 2008 has brought fateful consequences for the so-called welfare states. At the light of the social and ideological impact of this “crisis”, social scientists have inquired themselves about how rulers financed their states in past times, what kind of solutions they created, or how did they deal with private capital markets. This article examines how historians have approached the “financial crises” that took place in Castile during the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries during the last decade. By focusing on the methodological tools that historians have mobilized and the analytical perspectives they have employed, four different topics are examined in the following pages: bankruptcies, debt, taxation and finance

Trigeminal neuropathy of neoplastic origin accounts for a small percentage of trigeminal neuropathies, though the prognosis may be very poor. It is important to discard neoplastic processes in patients with numbness of the trigeminal territory. We present 7 cases of trigeminal neuropathy secondary to tumors: in four cases there were antecedents of systemic neoplastic disease, while in the remaining three cases neuropathy was the first manifestation of the tumor. The lesion was located in the mandible in three cases, in the region of the skull base in one patient, and in the brainstem and brain in one case each. In one case the lesion level could not be identified. The course was very poor in 5 cases. Recovery was only recorded in one patient in whom the symptoms were seen to disappear after acoustic nerve neurinoma resection. The lesions underlying neoplastic trigeminal neuropathy can be located at any point along the trajectory of the trigeminal nerve, and their prognosis is very poor
