This study delves into the compatible use of a parasitoid with multifunctional endophytic Entomopathogenic Ascomycetes (EA) in IPM under greenhouse conditions. The parasitoid Hyposoter didymator was evaluated against Spodoptera littoralis in a multitrophic system with melon plants that were endophytically colonized by one of three EA strains (Metarhizium brunneum [one] or Beauveria bassiana [two]). In the first scenario, plants were inoculated by three different methods, and after infestation with noctuid larvae, the parasitoid was released at a 1:20 ratio. Microbiological and molecular techniques allowed the identification of progressive colonization throughout the whole plant life cycle, and for B. bassiana, approximately 20% of seeds from new fruits were colonized. The parasitoid was shown to be compatible with all strains and application methods, with total mortality rates ranging from 11.1 to 77.8%. Significant lethal and sublethal effects, a decrease in pupal weight and mortality of pupae showing abnormalities and an extension of the immature developmental times were observed for different strain–application method combinations. Additionally, the fungal treatments improved crop growth, as revealed by the significant gains in plant weight. In a second scenario (by inoculating plants with the fungi only by leaf spraying), and after infestation with noctuid larvae, the parasitoid was released at a 1:10 ratio, which revealed the remote fungal effect from the inoculation point and confirmed the compatibility of the parasitoid-EA-based strategy. These findings underscore the compatible use of a parasitoid with endophytic EA for S. littoralis control that can additionally exploit their multifunctionality for sustainable crop production

Design tool to predict the open-hole failure strength of composite laminates subjected to in-plane loads

    Get PDF
A design tool based on Whitney-Nuismer model is proposed to predict the failure strength of open-hole composite plates subjected to in-plane loads, both tensile and compressive. One of the limitations of this model is the use of characteristic distances, which have to be estimated, and which are mostly considered constant material properties. In this work, it is demonstrated that these characteristic distances are a function of the plate geometry and are not a material property. Different analytical expressions are proposed to estimate the characteristic distances by using the results of only three experimental tests. This approach enables an accurate and fast estimation of the failure strength when the parameters of the plate are modified without using numerical simulations that require a longer time to be carried out.The authors are indebted for the financial support of this work to the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Spain (project DPI2013-42240-R).Publicad

[EN] The prevailing need to reduce the use of phytosanitary products, which helps mitigate its effect on the environment, makes it necessary to apply phytosanitary products more precisely, so in this work the design and the first results are presented of the evaluation of an experimental air-assisted sprayer designed to adapt application doses to tree canopy size. The prototype features vertical booms and customized air vents in conjunction with three ultrasonic rangefinders to estimate distances to targeted trees at three different heights. These ranges are continuously being sent to the decision making processor which applies a logic rule based on different criteria adjusted to the specific objectives selected for each application. Multiple field tests were performed in orange groves with varieties Clemenules and Orogrande. Sozzi-Rodríguez, AJ.; Ortí García, E.; Cuenca-Cuenca, A.; Val Manterola, LMJ. [EN] Precision spraying relies on the response of the spraying equipment to the features of the targeted canopy. PWM technology manages the flow rate using a set of electronically actuated solenoid valves to regulate flow rate at the nozzle level. Previous studies have found that PWM systems may deliver incorrect flow rates. The objective of the present study was to characterize the performance of a commercial blast sprayer modified with pulse-width-modulated nozzles under laboratory conditions, as a preliminary step before its further field validation. Four different duty cycles (25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent and 100 percent) and four different pressures (400 kPa, 500 kPa, 600 kPa and 700 kPa) were combined to experimentally measure the flow rate of each nozzle. Results showed that the PWM nozzles mounted in the commercial blast sprayer, under static conditions, were capable of modulating flow rate according to the duty cycle. However, the reduction of flow rates for the tested duty cycles according to pressure was lower than the percentage expected. A good linear relation was found between the pressure registered by the control system feedback sensor and the pressure measured by a reference conventional manometer located after the pump. High-speed video recordings confirmed the accurate opening and closing of the nozzles according to the duty cycle; however, substantial pressure variations were found at nozzle level. Further research to establish the general suitability of PWM systems for regulating nozzle flow rates in blast sprayers without modifying the system pressure still remains to be addressed. This research was funded by the Government of Spain through the project "Smart spraying for a sustainable vineyard and olive trees" PIVOS (PID2019-104289RB).Ortí García, E.; Cuenca, A.; Pérez Teruel, M.; Torregrosa, A.; Ortiz Sánchez, MC.; Rovira Más, F. Morphological characteristics in professional soccer referees in Mexico; Anthropometry and DXA

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to determine the morphological characteristics of 9 central and 13 assistant soccer referees of the second division of the MX league in Mexico. Anthropometric measurements and evaluations with dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were taken to obtain the fat mass and fat-free mass. In proportionality, the body type method was used to obtain the biotype. The central referees obtained a lower fat percentage (anthropometry and DXA) than the assistant referees, with the latter presenting a body type with greater skeletal muscle robustness. Although the central referees obtained a body condition with less fat than the assistants, by the simple fact that physical demands in a soccer match are two times greater, they were not in agreement with the characteristics of elite referees

What drives the helpfulness of online reviews? A deep learning study of sentiment analysis, pictorial content and reviewer expertise for mature destinations

Drawing on dual-process theories on how individuals process information, this study examines the role of central and peripheral information processing routes in the formation of consumers' perceptions of the helpfulness of online reviews of mature destinations. We carried out a two-step process to address the perceived helpfulness of user-generated content, a sentiment analysis using advanced machine-learning techniques (deep learning), and a regression analysis. The database was 2023 comments posted on TripAdvisor about two iconic Venetian cultural attractions, St. Mark's Square (an open, free attraction) and the Doge's Palace (which charges an entry fee). Using deep-learning techniques, with logistic regression, we first identified which factors influenced whether a review received a “helpful” vote. Second, we selected those reviews which received at least one helpful vote to identify, through linear regression, the significant determinants of TripAdvisor users' voting behaviour. The results showed that reviewer expertise is influential in both free and paid-for attractions, although the impact of central cues (sentiment polarity, subjectivity, pictorial content) differs for both attractions. Our study suggests that managers should look beyond individual ratings and focus on the sentiment analysis of online reviews, which are shown to be based on the nature of the attraction (free vs. paid-for)

Truncating FLNC Mutations Are Associated With High-Risk Dilated and Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathies

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Filamin C (encoded by the FLNC gene) is essential for sarcomere attachment to the plasmatic membrane. FLNC mutations have been associated with myofibrillar myopathies, and cardiac involvement has been reported in some carriers. Accordingly, since 2012, the authors have included FLNC in the genetic screening of patients with inherited cardiomyopathies and sudden death. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the association between truncating mutations in FLNC and the development of high-risk dilated and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies. METHODS: FLNC was studied using next-generation sequencing in 2,877 patients with inherited cardiovascular diseases. A characteristic phenotype was identified in probands with truncating mutations in FLNC. Clinical and genetic evaluation of 28 affected families was performed. Localization of filamin C in cardiac tissue was analyzed in patients with truncating FLNC mutations using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Twenty-three truncating mutations were identified in 28 probands previously diagnosed with dilated, arrhythmogenic, or restrictive cardiomyopathies. Truncating FLNC mutations were absent in patients with other phenotypes, including 1,078 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Fifty-four mutation carriers were identified among 121 screened relatives. The phenotype consisted of left ventricular dilation (68%), systolic dysfunction (46%), and myocardial fibrosis (67%); inferolateral negative T waves and low QRS voltages on electrocardiography (33%); ventricular arrhythmias (82%); and frequent sudden cardiac death (40 cases in 21 of 28 families). Clinical skeletal myopathy was not observed. Penetrance was >97% in carriers older than 40 years. Truncating mutations in FLNC cosegregated with this phenotype with a dominant inheritance pattern (combined logarithm of the odds score: 9.5). Immunohistochemical staining of myocardial tissue showed no abnormal filamin C aggregates in patients with truncating FLNC mutations. CONCLUSIONS: Truncating mutations in FLNC caused an overlapping phenotype of dilated and left-dominant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies complicated by frequent premature sudden death. Prompt implantation of a cardiac defibrillator should be considered in affected patients harboring truncating mutations in FLNC.Instituto de Salud Carlos III [PI11/0699, PI14/0967, PI14/01477, RD012/0042/0029, RD012/0042/0049, RD012/0042/0066, RD12/0042/0069]; Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness [SAF2015-71863-REDT]; Plan Nacional de I+D+I; Plan Estatalde I+D+I, European Regional Development Fund; Health in Code SLS
