The Metaphor of One/Many: towards a dialogical notion of personal identity (against “postmodern” reductionism)

En este trabajo pretendo corregir algunos de los “excesos” y simplificaciones de las teorías posmodernistas sobre la identidad. Trato de restituir al sujeto una ontología que no lo reduzca a meras determinaciones sociales, recuperar su carácter corpóreo-orgánico (embodiment) para su comprensión/construcción y, de este modo, retomar la cuestión de la unidad del sujeto (y de la unidad de/en su identidad) frente a la manida exaltación de su fragmentación (pluralidad de su identidad; en oposición a lo cual sostengo la idea de una ‘pluralidad de/en su identidad’).In this article I want to correct the excesses and simplifications which postmodernist theories have introduced into the current conception of personal identity. “Pasiones”, identidades colectivas y deliberación: los retos planteados por la democracia agonística

Theorists of agonistic democracy assume that the deliberative ideal fails to consider seriously enough the role of passions and collective identities in public life. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct this critique as formulated by Chantal Mouffe, and clarify the drawbacks that make it ultimately futile. More precisely, it will be argued that such a critique presupposes an unsatisfactory notion of reason. Furthermore, it is built upon some anthropologically pessimistic assumptions that, in the final analysis, are theoretically abstruse.Se considera desde la democracia agonística que la aplicación del principio discursivo a la vida pública no toma suficientemente en serio el papel que en ella juegan las pasiones y las formas colectivas de identificación. El artículo reconstruye esta crítica según ha sido formulada por Chantal Mouffe y dilucida los puntos que la tornan estéril ante el modelo deliberativo. El artículo parte de la siguiente observación: pese a la comparativamente mayor pluralidad cultural de los municipios turísticos de Adeje, Arona y Santiago del Teide, al menos en cuanto a las dispares nacionalidades de sus residentes, los discursos dominantes acerca de los Otros han sido, en su contenido y forma, idénticos a los que pudieron ser observados (reconstruidos) con relación al conjunto del espacio público tinerfeño. A través de esta observación, de la descripción de sus contornos y de la exposición de tres hipótesis explicativas, nos aproximaremos, más ampliamente, al modo en que se ha organizado la convivencia en los mencionados territorios

Towards a revised theory of collective learning processes:

Societies change; and sociology has, since its inception, described and evaluated these changes. This article proposes a revised theory of collective learning processes, a conceptual framework which addresses ways in which people make sense of and cope with change. Drawing on Habermas’ classic proposal, but shifting the focus from argumentation towards storytelling, it explains how certain articulations allow for collective learning processes (imagining more inclusive orders), while others block learning processes (imagining more exclusive orders). More specifically, the article points to narrative genres (romance, tragedy, comedy and irony) which organize feelings and shape the social bond, proposing that ironic and tragic stories have the potential to trigger collective learning processes, while romantic and comic stories tend to block them.Peer Reviewe

La teoría lacaniana de la ideología: su potencial explicativo y limitaciones La teoría lacaniana de la ideología: su potencial explicativo y limitaciones

El artículo aborda el poder explicativo de la teoría lacaniana de la ideología según ha sido formulada por la “escuela de Essex”. La cuestión será tratada a partir de un estudio de caso, el del discurso xenófobo en Tenerife. Se argumentará que nos encontramos ante una teoría con importantes claroscuros. Gracias al énfasis que la misma pone en la complicidad del sujeto con la ideología, permite dar cuenta no sólo del poder de seducción de un discurso ideológico, sino también de su propia existencia (la del discurso), cuando el mismo es internamente inconsistente. No obstante, la teoría lacaniana deja varios interrogantes sin resolver: ¿por qué unos discursos ideológicos tienen más éxito que otros? ¿Por qué ciertos sujetos, y no todos, caen en las garras de la ideología? Asimismo, se subrayarán ciertas ambigüedades conceptuales que cuestionan la utilidad analítica de este enfoque.<br>This article tackles the explanatory potentiality of the Lacanian theory of ideology as has been formulated by the ‘Essex school’. This issue will be approached by way of a case study; namely, the xenophobic discourse in Tenerife. It will be argued that the Lacanian theory is an uneven one. On the one hand, thanks to its emphasis on the subject’s complicity with ideology, it can account for the seductive power of ideological discourses. Furthermore, it can render the very existence of these discourses intelligible in cases in which they lack logical consistency. On the other hand, however, the Lacanian theory is unable to answer some relevant questions: Why do some ideological discourses have more success than others? Why are just some subjects, and not all of them, gripped by ideology? In addition, some conceptual ambiguities will be highlighted, which undermine the analytical utility of this theoretical approach

A Review of the Empirical, Systemic and Rhetoric Turns in Deliberative Theory

En este trabajo se ofrecerá un balance del giro empírico de la teoría deliberativa. Se sostendrá que el mismo (a) aporta abundante evidencia empírica tendente a demostrar las potencialidades de la deliberación pública; (b) pone de relieve el gran número de factores que condicionan tales procesos de deliberación y (c) subraya las divergentes condiciones que favorecen la satisfacción de determinadas expectativas normativas asociadas al ideal de democracia deliberativa. Esta última observación ha insuflado un renovado impulso a las aproximaciones sistémicas y retóricas a la deliberación. En la segunda parte de este trabajo, se las caracterizará brevemente, expondrá su mutua complementariedad e identificarán sus actuales déficits y retos.In this paper the empirical turn in deliberative theory is reviewed. It is argued, first, that empirical research provides abundant evidence showing the potentialities of public deliberation. Furthermore,it has greatly contributed to identifying the diverse elements that condition deliberative processes. Last but not least, empirical research has underscored the divergent conditions that contributepositively to satisfying many of the normative expectations associated to deliberative democracy. This last point has injected fresh impetus to systemic and rhetorical perspectives in deliberative theory. In the second part of this paper, these two approaches are briefly discussed. Their main features and complementarities, as well as their shortcomings and thus future challenges, are shown
