Self-consistent model for ambipolar tunneling in quantum-well systems

We present a self-consistent approach to describe ambipolar tunneling in asymmetrical double quantum wells under steady-state excitation and extend the results to the case of tunneling from a near-surface quantum well to surface states. The results of the model compare very well with the behavior observed in photoluminescence experiments in InGaAs/InPInGaAs/InP asymmetric double quantum wells and in near-surface AlGaAs/GaAsAlGaAs/GaAs single quantum wells.Comment: 10 pages, REVTeX 3.

Featured Application: This case report aims to describe an update of the digital protocol for the fabrication of a facial prosthesis for those patients who cannot be rehabilitated with plastic surgery because of post-surgical complications after maxillofacial surgery. In detail, it describes the application of the digital protocol to a mid-facial defect. The innovation proposed is oriented to simplify the procedures and reduce the time and cost of the process, aiming to recover the quality of life of inoperable patients. This case report aims to describe novel steps in the digital design/manufacturing of facial prostheses for cancer patients with wide inoperable residual defects, with a focus on a case of a mid-facial defect. A facial scanner was used to make an impression of the post-surgical residual defect and to digitalize it. The daughter’s face scan was used for reconstructing the missing anatomy. Using 3D printing technologies, try-in prototypes were produced in silicone material. The substructure was laser melted. The final prosthesis was relined directly onto the patient’s defect. The prosthesis resulted in a very low weight and a high elasticity of the external margins. The laser-melted substructure ensured the necessary rigidity with minimum thickness

Il riequilibrio della finanza pubblica negli anni Novanta

    Get PDF

Does ureteral access sheath have an impact on ureteral injury?

Objective: To present a well-organized review about ureteral access sheath impact on ureteral injury. Materials and Methods: Systemic search on literature was done. Total of 3766 studies observed by two urologists and results were unified. A Prisma diagram was used for eliminating irrelevant studies and at the end of elimination process 28 studies were found eligible for this review. Results: Not only clinical studies but also comparative experimental animal studies show that there is no significant data to claim that ureteral access sheath insertion causes more ureteral injury. Pre-stented patients were found to be at lower risk for ureteral injury. Risk of progression to ureteral injury seems to be low even if ureteral injury occurs with insertion of ureteral access sheath. Conclusion: Summary of studies' results indicate that use of ureteral access sheath doesn't increase ureteral injury. This review may help understanding safety profile of ureteral access sheath on evidence-based level. There is not enough data to make a statement that ureteral access sheath prevents ureteral injury

Experimental Engineering of Arbitrary Qudit States with Discrete-Time Quantum Walks

The capability to generate and manipulate quantum states in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces is a crucial step for the development of quantum technologies, from quantum communication to quantum computation. One-dimensional quantum walk dynamics represents a valid tool in the task of engineering arbitrary quantum states. Here we affirm such potential in a linear-optics platform that realizes discrete-time quantum walks in the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom of photons. Different classes of relevant qudit states in a six-dimensional space are prepared and measured, confirming the feasibility of the protocol. Our results represent a further investigation of quantum walk dynamics in photonics platforms, paving the way for the use of such a quantum state-engineering toolbox for a large range of applications

Proceedings of: 6th International Conference on Soft Computing Models in Industrial and Environmental Applications (SOCO 2011). Salamanca, April 6-8, 2011Abstract: In this work, authors define a set of principles that should be contained in context-aware applications (including biometric sensors) to accomplish the legal aspect in Europe and USA. Paper presents the necessity to consider legal aspect, related with pri-vacy or human rights, into the development of the incipient context based services. Clearly, context based services and Ambient Intelligence (and the most promising work area in Europe that is Ambient Assisted Living, ALL) needs a great effort in research new identification procedures.Publicad

Phytoplankton chlorophyte structure as related to ENSO events in a saline lowland river (Salado River, Buenos Aires, Argentina)

We analyzed the phytoplankton present in the lower sector of the Salado River (Buenos Aires, Argentina) for 10 years (1995–2005) and detected significant changes occurring in chlorophyte abundance and species richness during La Niña event (1998–1999), which period was analyzed throughout the entire basin (main stream and tributaries). We compared the physicochemical and biologic variables between two El Niño–La Niña–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) periods – El Niño (March 1997–January 1998) and La Niña (May 1998–May 1999) – to identify possible indicators of a relationship between climatic anomalies and chlorophyte performance. Chlorophyte density increased during the La Niña. Under normal or extreme hydrologic conditions, mobile (Chlamydomonas spp.) and nonmobile (Monoraphidium spp.) chlorophytes codominated. These species belonged to Reynolds's functional groups X1 and X2, those typical of nutrient-enriched environments. Comparative analyses between El Niño and La Niña periods indicated significant differences in physicochemical (K+, dissolved polyphenols, particulate reactive phosphorus, alkalinity, pH) and biologic (species diversity and richness, phytoplankton and chlorophyte total densities) variables between the two periods at all basin sites. During the La Niña condition, species richness was greater owing to interconnected shallow lakes and drainage-channel inputs, while the Shannon diversity index was lower because of the high abundance values of Monoraphidium minutum. A detailed analysis of the chlorophytes in the entire basin, indicated that changes in density and species dominance occurred on a regional scale although diverse chlorophyte assemblages were identified in the different sectors of the Salado River basin. After La Niña event, the entire basin had the potential to revert to the previous density values, showing the resilience to global environmental changes and the ability to reestablish the general conditions of stability.Fil: Solari, Lía Cristina.
