Brazil, due to its extensive territorial dimension, is considered a benchmark in agricultural production among developing countries. Within this context, agriculture plays a crucial role in the Brazilian economy as it contributes significantly to the balance of trade. Thus, the Brazilian agricultural production experience since year 2004, excellent prospects for sustainable growth and consistency, strong leadership in achieving the production of soybeans, corn, coffee, meat, sugar and others. Thus, since 1990 there are some institutions implementing microcredit programs. One of the most prominent is the Bank of Northeast of Brazil with Agroamigo. The present study describes how the methodology for granting credit - Agroamigo – to the farmers. The methodology used in this study was exploratory and descriptive. Research resources were books, articles, journals, reports, theses and dissertations, and especially official databases. The Agroamigo method had given positive results to communities in the municipality, as there was also a growth in rural activities, according to the BNB (2009), in the order of 40%. The program has enhanced access to rural credit for small farmers and provided improvements in their lives

Background: Odontogenic tumors (OTs) are considered important among oral lesions because of their clinicopathological heterogeneity, and variable biological behavior. This paper aims to determine the frequency and distribution of OTs, over a period of 10 years, at a public university in Northeastern Brazil and compare this data with previous reports. Material and Methods: We reviewed all cases of OTs from oral pathology laboratory of University of Pernambuco (UPE), from 2004 to 2014. Diagnoses were re-evaluated and the tumors were classified according to the latest (2005) World Health Organization Classification of Tumors. In addition, we searched in the English-language literature retrospective studies on OTs that used the same classification. Results: Within the total of 6028 oral biopsies, 289 (4.79%) were OTs. Of these, 287 (99.3%) were benign and 2 (0.7%) were malignant. The overall incidence was 31.1/million. Mandible-maxilla ratio was 2.5:1 and mean age 35 years. Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) (34.6%) was the most frequent lesion, followed by ameloblastoma (AMB) (32.9%) and odontoma (ODO) (11.4%). Conclusions: OTs are uncommon neoplasms with geographic variation. Our clinicopathological features are according to literature. In the present study, KCOT was the most frequent one, showing that the new classification of OTs altered the distribution of these lesions and possibly made KCOT the most common OT observed in diagnostic services worldwid

Introduction: Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) is an infectious disease transmitted by ticks of the genus Amblyomma, whose main etiological agent is the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, manifesting itself through an acute febrile condition. Objective: This narrative review aimed to address the epidemiological and clinical aspects of Brazilian Spotted Fever in Brazil. Methodology: A descriptive study with a retrospective approach carried out through a literature search based on data obtained from articles available free of charge in the Medline, PubMed, Scopus and SciELO databases, published from 2013 to 2023. In order to address the main theme more broadly, gray literature and data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System - SINAN were also used, which were statically analyzed using the Epi Info and BioEstat programs. Results and Discussion: In Brazil, the main species of tick vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii, obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacilli that cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever are Amblyomma cajennense and A. aureolatum. Retrospective analysis of SINAN data found an average of 163.7 cases and a lethality of 31.6. The epidemiological study found a higher incidence and mortality from FMB in the Southeast Region, mainly in white men aged 20 to 60 years. Variables such as gender, race, age group, site of infection and macro-region were also relevant in the study. Prominent symptoms include fever, headache and myalgia, and may present a broad clinical spectrum with severe cases. Serology is the basis of diagnosis and indirect immunofluorescence is the preferred test. The treatment of choice is doxycycline from the tetracycline group. Conclusion: Early detection and appropriate treatment are important to reduce morbidity and mortality from tick-borne pathogens.

ObjectivesTo assess the ABC2-SPH score in predicting COVID-19 in-hospital mortality, during intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and to compare its performance with other scores (SOFA, SAPS-3, NEWS2, 4C Mortality Score, SOARS, CURB-65, modified CHA2DS2-VASc, and a novel severity score).Materials and methodsConsecutive patients (≥ 18 years) with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 admitted to ICUs of 25 hospitals, located in 17 Brazilian cities, from October 2020 to March 2022, were included. Overall performance of the scores was evaluated using the Brier score. ABC2-SPH was used as the reference score, and comparisons between ABC2-SPH and the other scores were performed by using the Bonferroni method of correction. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality.ResultsABC2-SPH had an area under the curve of 0.716 (95% CI 0.693–0.738), significantly higher than CURB-65, SOFA, NEWS2, SOARS, and modified CHA2DS2-VASc scores. There was no statistically significant difference between ABC2-SPH and SAPS-3, 4C Mortality Score, and the novel severity score.ConclusionABC2-SPH was superior to other risk scores, but it still did not demonstrate an excellent predictive ability for mortality in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Our results indicate the need to develop a new score, for this subset of patients

The complete genome sequence of Chromobacterium violaceum reveals remarkable and exploitable bacterial adaptability

    Get PDF
Chromobacterium violaceum is one of millions of species of free-living microorganisms that populate the soil and water in the extant areas of tropical biodiversity around the world. Its complete genome sequence reveals (i) extensive alternative pathways for energy generation, (ii) ≈500 ORFs for transport-related proteins, (iii) complex and extensive systems for stress adaptation and motility, and (iv) wide-spread utilization of quorum sensing for control of inducible systems, all of which underpin the versatility and adaptability of the organism. The genome also contains extensive but incomplete arrays of ORFs coding for proteins associated with mammalian pathogenicity, possibly involved in the occasional but often fatal cases of human C. violaceum infection. There is, in addition, a series of previously unknown but important enzymes and secondary metabolites including paraquat-inducible proteins, drug and heavy-metal-resistance proteins, multiple chitinases, and proteins for the detoxification of xenobiotics that may have biotechnological applications
