    The Costs of Transportation at McKillop Library

    Much like other libraries and institutions across the United States, Salve Regina faces its share of efficiency problems. In turn, these problems add to the many environmental issues we face today. These are mostly paper waste, recycling, or lack thereof, and the amount of energy needed to heat buildings. Notwithstanding the excessive consumption and waste, our group focused on transportation. The main goal of this project was to measure the current transportation costs and explore ways to cut carbon emissions. By sending a questionnaire through email, the staff responded with the type of vehicle they drive and their commuting distance. Most of the staff lives in state but the issue of commuting still has a large impact on the environment. Each gallon of burned gasoline products produces 19.4 pounds of carbon dioxide (EPA). Using the staffā€™s statistics, we found that 15,180 pounds of carbon dioxide is released by the staff weekly just by driving to work. Also, only a handful walk or bike to work and nobody takes public transportation. In conclusion, we found that the library can greatly reduce their carbon emissions by driving less, driving more fuel efficient vehicles, and utilizing public transportation. The most beneficial recommendation we have is to use public transportation. We understand that people enjoy driving their cars for a variety of reasons but environmentally, this would make an enormous difference. Maybe the library director could come up with some incentives to get staff members to take the bus instead of driving, for example, a free lunch at Miley cafeteria

    A new introductory quantum mechanics curriculum

    The Institute of Physics New Quantum Curriculum consists of freely available online learning and teaching materials (quantumphysics.iop.org) for a first course in university quantum mechanics starting from two-level systems. This approach immediately immerses students in inherently quantum mechanical aspects by focusing on experiments that have no classical explanation. It allows from the start a discussion of interpretive aspects of quantum mechanics and quantum information theory. This article gives an overview of the resources available at the IOP website. The core text is presented as around 80 articles co-authored by leading experts that are arranged in themes and can be used flexibly to provide a range of alternative approaches. Many of the articles include interactive simulations with accompanying activities and problem sets that can be explored by students to enhance their understanding. Much of the linear algebra needed for this approach is part of the resource. Solutions to activities are available to instructors.     DAS28(3)CRP is a reliable measure of disease activity in pregnant women with rheumatoid arthritis

    OBJECTIVES: The disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in pregnancy is most commonly assessed with the modified Disease Activity Score (DAS)-28, the DAS28(3)CRP. However, the performance of the DAS28(3)CRP in pregnancy has not been compared to musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US) as a gold standard. We performed a prospective pilot study to test the hypothesis that pregnancy-related factors limit the reliability of the DAS28(3)CRP. METHODS: Pregnant women with RA were recruited from an Obstetric Rheumatology clinic and assessed during pregnancy (second (T2) and third (T3) trimesters) and postpartum with DAS28(3)CRP and MSK-US scores, with quantification of power Doppler (PD) signal in small joints (hands and feet). Age-matched non-pregnant women with RA underwent equivalent assessments. PD scores were calculated as mean scores of all joints scanned. RESULTS: We recruited 27 pregnant and 20 non-pregnant women with RA. DAS28(3)CRP was sensitive and specific for active RA in pregnancy and postpartum as defined by positive PD signal, but not in non-pregnancy. There were significant correlations between DAS28(3)CRP and PD scores throughout pregnancy (T2, r=0.82 (95% CI [0.42, 0.95], p<0.01); T3, r=0.68 (95% CI [0.38, 0.86], p<0.01)) and postpartum, r=0.84 (95% CI [0.60, 0.94], p<0.01), while this correlation in non-pregnancy was weaker (r=0.47 (95% CI [0, 0.77], p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study found that DAS28(3)CRP is a reliable measure of disease activity in pregnant women with RA. Based on these data, pregnancy does not appear to confound clinical evaluation of the tender and/or swollen joint counts

    A multiple case history and systematic review of adoption, diffusion, implementation and impact of provincial daily physical activity policies in Canadian schools

    BACKGROUND : Few children meet physical activity (PA) recommendations, and are therefore at increased risk for overweight/obesity and adverse health outcomes. To increase children\u27s opportunities for PA, several Canadian provinces have adopted school-based daily PA (DPA) policies. It is not clear why some jurisdictions have adopted DPA policies, and others have not, nor whether these policies have been implemented and have achieved their intended outcomes. The purpose of this study was to understand the processes underlying adoption and diffusion of Canadian DPA policies, and to review evidence regarding their implementation and impact. METHODS: We adopted a multiple case history methodology in which we traced the chronological trajectory of DPA policies among Canadian provinces by compiling timelines detailing key historical events that preceded policy adoption. Publicly available documents posted on the internet were reviewed to characterize adopter innovativeness, describe the content of their DPA policies, and explore the context surrounding policy adoption. Diffusion of Innovations theory provided a conceptual framework for the analyses. A systematic literature search identified studies that had investigated adoption, diffusion, implementation or impact of Canadian DPA policies. RESULTS: Five of Canada\u27s 13 provinces and territories (38.5%) have DPA policies. Although the underlying objectives of the policies are similar, there are clear differences among them and in their various policy trajectories. Adoption and diffusion of DPA policies were structured by the characteristics and capacities of adopters, the nature of their policies, and contextual factors. Limited data suggests implementation of DPA policies was moderate but inconsistent and that Canadian DPA policies have had little to no impact on school-aged children\u27s PA levels or BMI. CONCLUSIONS: This study detailed the history and current status of Canadian DPA policies, highlighting the conditional nature of policy adoption and diffusion, and describing policy and adopter characteristics and political contexts that shaped policy trajectories. An understanding of the conditions associated with successful policy adoption and diffusion can help identify receptive contexts in which to pioneer novel legislative initiatives to increase PA among children. By reviewing evidence regarding policy implementation and impact, this study can also inform amendments to existing, and development of future PA policies

    Global dung webs: high trophic generalism of dung beetles along the latitudinal diversity gradient

    At the global scale, species diversity is known to strongly increase towards the equator for most taxa. According to theory, a higher resource specificity of consumers facilitates the coexistence of a larger number of species and has been suggested as an explanation for the latitudinal diversity gradient. However, only few studies support the predicted increase in specialisation or even showed opposite results. Surprisingly, analyses for detritivores are still missing. Therefore, we performed an analysis on the degree of trophic specialisation of dung beetles. We summarised 45 studies, covering the resource preferences of a total of 994503 individuals, to calculate the dung specificity in each study region. Our results highlighted a significant (4.3ā€fold) increase in the diversity of beetles attracted to vertebrate dung towards the equator. However, their resource specificity was low, unrelated to diversity and revealed a highly generalistic use of dung resources that remained similar along the latitudinal gradient

    A randomised controlled feasibility trial for an educational school-based mental health intervention: study protocol

    Background: With the burden of mental illness estimated to be costing the English economy alone around Ā£22.5 billion a year [1], coupled with growing evidence that many mental disorders have their origins in adolescence, there is increasing pressure for schools to address the emotional well-being of their students, alongside the stigma and discrimination of mental illness. A number of prior educational interventions have been developed and evaluated for this purpose, but inconsistency of findings, reporting standards, and methodologies have led the majority of reviewers to conclude that the evidence for the efficacy of these programmes remains inconclusive. Methods/Design: A cluster randomised controlled trial design has been employed to enable a feasibility study of 'SchoolSpace', an intervention in 7 UK secondary schools addressing stigma of mental illness, mental health literacy, and promotion of mental health. A central aspect of the intervention involves students in the experimental condition interacting with a young person with lived experience of mental illness, a stigma reducing technique designed to facilitate students' engagement in the project. The primary outcome is the level of stigma related to mental illness. Secondary outcomes include mental health literacy, resilience to mental illness, and emotional well-being. Outcomes will be measured pre and post intervention, as well as at 6 month follow-up. Discussion: The proposed intervention presents the potential for increased engagement due to its combination of education and contact with a young person with lived experience of mental illness. Contact as a technique to reduce discrimination has been evaluated previously in research with adults, but has been employed in only a minority of research trials investigating the impact on youth. Prior to this study, the effect of contact on mental health literacy, resilience, and emotional well-being has not been evaluated to the authors' knowledge. If efficacious the intervention could provide a reliable and cost-effective method to reduce stigma in young people, whilst increasing mental health literacy, and emotional well-being.     Trial summary and protocol for a phase II randomised placebo-controlled double-blinded trial of Interleukin 1 blockade in Acute Severe Colitis: the IASO trial.

    INTRODUCTION: Acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) is a severe manifestation of ulcerative colitis (UC) that warrants hospitalisation. Despite significant advances in therapeutic options for UC and in the medical management of steroid-refractory ASUC, the initial treatment paradigm has not changed since 1955 and is based on the use of intravenous corticosteroids. This treatment is successful in approximately 50% of patients but failure of this and subsequent medical therapy still occurs, with colectomy rates of up to 40% reported. The Interleukin 1 (IL-1) blockade in Acute Severe Colitis (IASO) trial aims to investigate whether antagonism of IL-1 signalling using anakinra in addition to intravenous corticosteroid treatment can improve outcomes in patients with ASUC. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: IASO is a phase II, multicentre, two-arm (parallel group), randomised (1:1), placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial of short-duration anakinra in ASUC. Its primary outcome will be the incidence of medical (eg, infliximab/ciclosporin) or surgical rescue therapy (colectomy) within 10 days following the commencement of intravenous corticosteroid therapy. Secondary outcomes will include disease activity, time to clinical response, time to rescue therapy, colectomy incidence by day 98 post intravenous corticosteroids and safety. The trial aims to recruit 214 patients across 20 sites in the UK. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The trial has received approval from the Cambridge Central Research Ethics Committee (Ref: 17/EE/0347), the Health Research Authority (Ref: 201505) and Clinical Trials Authorisation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.     Seek Help from Teachers or Fight Back? Student Perceptions of Teachersā€™ Actions during Conflicts and Responses to Peer Victimization

    Previous research has shown that teachersā€™ actions when addressing conflict on school grounds can shape adolescent perceptions regarding how well the school manages victimization. Our objective in this study was to determine how these perceptions influenced the likelihood that adolescent students would react to victimization scenarios by either seeking help from school authority or physically fighting back. Vignettes describing two events of victimization were administered to 148 ethnic minority adolescents (Latino, African American, and Asian backgrounds; 49% female) attending an urban high school with high rates of conflict. Positive perceptions of teachersā€™ actions during conflictsā€”assessed via a questionnaire tapping how teachers manage student conflicts both generally and in a specific instance of strifeā€”predicted a greater willingness to seek help from school authority, which in turn negatively predicted self-reported aggressive responses to the victimization scenarios. Path analysis established the viability of this indirect effect model, even when we controlled for sex, beliefs about the acceptability of aggression, and previous levels of reactive aggression. Adolescentsā€™ perceptions of teachersā€™ actions during conflicts are discussed in relation to social information processing models, improving studentā€“teacher relations, and decreasing aggression at schools
