Transforming the Fashion Industry by: The Evolution of Design & Merchandising Education

How do we prepare students for the fashion industry in the face of an ethical awakening when issues of climate change are complicated by political turmoil, social injustice, and food insecurity, where advances in technology ignite concerns over surveillance, data privacy, equity, and dependence? What if those working in the fashion system had a deeper sense of responsibility for their product creation? As the fashion industry shifts, awareness of the ethical implications has become a necessity and responsibility not only for industry professionals but for educators who are teaching the next generation. Fashion design and merchandising curricula may skim the surface of ethical design and strategy but often falls short on how to integrate ethical decision-making into coursework. The authors seek to answer this overarching question: are students who study fashion design and merchandising better prepared after graduation when ethics and entrepreneurship are an integral part of their curricula

The naturalization of environmental problems of oil exploitation in Comodoro Rivadavia

En este artículo, a partir de una perspectiva multidisciplinar, se busca problematizarla cuestión am biental en Comodoro Rivadavia en torno a la explotación petrolera. En este sentido, el análisis se inicia en relación a los efectos de esta actividad económica en diferentes cuestiones que hacen al habitar la ciudad, principalmente haciendo hincapié en las formas y límites sobre el acceso al suelo urbano y cómo esto influye en las condiciones de vida y prácticas cotidianas, trazadas por desigualdades socio-ambientales que se encrudecen en aquellos espacios barriales producto de “toma de tierras”, principalm ente, a través de acciones que tienden a condenar de manera excluyente estos barrios y su población a vivir en condiciones de vulnerabilidad ambiental, en diferencia al resto de la ciudad. Como parte de un análisis crítico sobre lo ambiental, cuestionamos imaginarios y sentidos sobre el petróleo y sus impactos ambientales en el conjunto de la sociedad comodorense, planteando también de qué manera las dificultades para desnaturalizar los efectos negativos de este recurso y el carácter sagrado del mismo, gene ran escasa conciencia acerca de los d años, grados de afectación y el compromiso en la calidad de vida comodorense.In this article, from a multidisciplinary perspective, we want to discuss environmental issues in Comodoro Rivadavia around oil exploitation. In this sense, the analysis begins in relation to the effects of this economic activity on different issues that are part of living in the city, mainly focusing on the forms and limits on access to urban land and how this influences the life conditions and daily practices, drawn by socio-environmental inequalities that are increased in those urban spaces product of “toma de tierras”, mainly through actions that tend to condemn in an exclusive manner these neighborhoods and its people to live in conditions of environmental vulnerability, in cont rast to the rest of the city. Disturbance as a factor in breaking dormancy and enhancing invasiveness of African grasses in a Neotropical Savanna

The Cerrado is threatened by wildfires and invasive species. We aimed to evaluate in laboratory conditions whether temperature fluctuation at the soil surface, resulting from the absence of vegetation due to fire, can affect the germination of Urochloa decumbens and U. brizantha, two invasive African grasses. Seeds of both species were submitted to simulations: 1) temperature during fire at 1cm belowground (F); 2) temperature fluctuation at 1cm belowground without vegetation cover for a month (TF); 3) (F) + (TF); 4) control at 25ºC. After treatments, seeds were put to germinate at 25ºC for 40 days. We had four replicates per treatment and three temporal replicates. We compared germination percentage and the mean germination time among treatments using ANOVA. The treatments TF and F+TF had the highest germination values for both species. The results showed that fire per se could not stimulate seed germination, however, they suggest that a disturbance that produces a pattern of temperature fluctuation is able to break dormancy and enhance seed germination and, consequently, increase the invasiveness of the study species. Vegetation gaps resulting from disturbance may become new sites of invasion. Rescate de especies forestales en peligro crítico de extinción en Costa Rica

Proyecto de Investigación. Universidad Nacional de costa Rica (UNA); Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (ITCR). Escuela de Biología; Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED), 2010El proyecto interuniversitario (UNA, ITCR, UNED, CONARE, 2007-2009), propuesto y coordinado por el INISEFOR, tuvo como objetivo contribuir a la supervivencia y conservar la diversidad genética de seis especies en peligro crítico (Cedrela salvadorensis, Platymiscium yucatanum, Paramachaerium gruberi, Cedrela fissilis, Ruagea insignis y Gamanthera herrerae), mediante la aplicación métodos de conservación y reproducción ex situ. Se pudo comprobar en campo las importantes limitantes reproductivas en varias especies y poblaciones: ausencia de floración, muy pocos árboles producen semilla viable, solo en muy pequeñas cantidades y solo en algunos años. Es notoria escasez casi total de individuos árboles jóvenes. Entre las posibles razones de esta situación están: cambio climático, erosión genética, aislamiento y endogamia, ausencia de polinizadores y/o de dispersores de las semillas, falta de hábitat adecuado para las plántulas, etc. Como resultado importante, pero preocupante, durante la ejecución del proyecto no se localizó ningún árbol de C. fissilis y solamente un individuo de G. herrerae, a pesar de la múltiples exploraciones de campo. Es muy posible que C. fissilis ya se haya extinguido en Costa Rica y G. herrerae esté prácticamente extinta. Este resultado demuestra lo grave de la situación y la pertinencia del proyecto. Para las restantes 4 especies (C. salvadorensis, P. yucatanum, P. gruberi y R. insignis), se han geo-referenciado árboles remanentes, recolectado semilla y establecido colecciones genéticas ex situ. Se desarrollaron métodos exitosos de propagación sexual (semilla) y, principalmente protocolos de propagación vegetativa masiva de 2 especies, mediante el enraizamiento y aclimatación de miniestacas juveniles. El protocolo de propagación vegetativa para R. insignis está aún en desarrollo. Como actividad adicional del proyecto, se estableció un rodal de conservación genética de Swietenia macrophylla mediante la donación por parte del CATIE de una colección de semillas de varias poblaciones de América Latina. Los resultados obtenidos, muestran que la metodología desarrollada tiene un gran potencial para el rescate de la variación genética y reproducción de especies forestales en peligro de extinción, haciendo posible su reintroducción en ecosistemas donde hayan sufrido una fuerte erosión genética o se hayan extinguido. Efecto de la temperatura del medio de enfriamiento por temple sobre las propiedades mecánicas de la aleación TiAl

Se analizaron las propiedades mecánicas sobre muestras de una aleación TiAl que fue solubilizada a 1100°C y enfriada en una aleación fundida o baño metálico con una composición Sn-21Bi estabilizado a tres diferentes temperaturas. Así mismo se analizó el cambio microestructural de la aleación y se evaluaron las propiedades mecánicas que dicho tratamiento generó, realizando ensayos de dureza y compresión, dicho tratamiento logró elevar la dureza hasta 4 veces en relación a la probeta testigo. Sin embargo, la mejor relación entre dureza y tenacidad se logra cuando solo se duplica la dureza y se conserva una buena tenacidad en el ensayo de compresión, esto debido a una microestructura mixta y con un porcentaje de fases alfa-beta equitativo. Esta microestructura es producto de las condiciones específicas durante el enfriamiento, con lo cual se demuestra que no solo hay una relación entre las propiedades mecánicas entre el material y su microestructura, sino también depende del porcentaje de fases presentes.Mechanical properties were analyzed on samples of a TiAl alloy that was solubilized at 1100°C and cooled in a molten alloy or metal bath with a Sn-21Bi composition stabilized at three different temperatures. The microstructural change of the alloy was analyzed and the mechanical properties that said treatment generated were evaluated, performing hardness and compression tests. The metalic bath treatment managed to raise the hardness up to 4 times in relation to the control specimen. However, the best relationship between hardness and toughness is achieved when only the hardness is doubled and a good toughness is retained in the compression test, this due to a mixed microstructure with a percentage of equitable alpha-beta phases. This microstructure is a product of the specific conditions during cooling, which demonstrates that there is not only a relationship between the mechanical properties and its microstructure, but also depends on the percentage of phases present

Multi-omics of the gut microbial ecosystem in inflammatory bowel diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases, which include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, affect several million individuals worldwide. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are complex diseases that are heterogeneous at the clinical, immunological, molecular, genetic, and microbial levels. Individual contributing factors have been the focus of extensive research. As part of the Integrative Human Microbiome Project (HMP2 or iHMP), we followed 132 subjects for one year each to generate integrated longitudinal molecular profiles of host and microbial activity during disease (up to 24 time points each; in total 2,965 stool, biopsy, and blood specimens). Here we present the results, which provide a comprehensive view of functional dysbiosis in the gut microbiome during inflammatory bowel disease activity. We demonstrate a characteristic increase in facultative anaerobes at the expense of obligate anaerobes, as well as molecular disruptions in microbial transcription (for example, among clostridia), metabolite pools (acylcarnitines, bile acids, and short-chain fatty acids), and levels of antibodies in host serum. Periods of disease activity were also marked by increases in temporal variability, with characteristic taxonomic, functional, and biochemical shifts. Finally, integrative analysis identified microbial, biochemical, and host factors central to this dysregulation. The study's infrastructure resources, results, and data, which are available through the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Multi'omics Database ( http://ibdmdb.org ), provide the most comprehensive description to date of host and microbial activities in inflammatory bowel diseases

Caracterización metalúrgica del acero SA-612 deteriorado después de quince años de servicio

Se analizó el deterioro en tanque estacionario para gas LP de acero SA-612 después de quince años de servicio, mediante un análisis microestructural en el Microscopio Electrónico de Barrido (MEB), ensayos de impacto Charpy, tensión uniaxial y dureza Rockwell C. Se encontró que la resistencia máxima a tensión y dureza disminuyeron 15 y 36%, respectivamente, mientras que la elongación incrementó del 16 al 40%, con respecto a propiedades originales. De la caracterización microestructural se observó que el acero está deteriorado con reducción en la cantidad de perlita y precipitación de partículas en límites de grano ferritico con tamaño grande debido a la exposición en intemperie. Por lo tanto, este tanque mostro degradación microestructural y mecánica en tensión e impacto, es decir, presento una condición de sobre-envejecimiento, a causa de las condiciones de servicio, favoreciendo posibles fugas de gas y explosiones catastróficas.The deterioration in stationary tank for SA-612 steel LP gas after fifteen years of service was analyzed by microstructural analysis in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Charpy impact tests, uniaxial tension and Rockwell C hardness. It was found that the ultimate tensile strength and hardness decreased 15 and 36%, respectively, while the elongation increased from 16 to 40%, with respect to original properties. From the microstructural characterization, it was observed that the Steel is deteriorated with a reduction in the amount of pearlite and precipitation of particles in limits of ferritic grain with large size due to exposure in the outdoor. Therefore, this tank showed microstructural and mechanical degradation under tension and impact, that is, it presented an over-aging condition, due to the service conditions, favoring possible gas leaks and catastrophic explosions

Anafilaxia en niños y adultos: prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento

La anafilaxia es una condición que requiere asistencia inmediata para su resolución, se puede presentar en diferentes entornos: consultorio, hospital, escuela, hogar o en algún otro espacio público. La información aquí contenida forma parte de lineamientos conocidos sobre prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento. Se abordan aspectos epidemiológicos, desencadenantes, factores de riesgo y cofactores; se explican de una manera didáctica los mecanismos fisiopatológicos que se traducen en fenotipos de presentación. Se enfatiza el diagnóstico clínico con base en criterios ya establecidos, se mencionan clasificaciones para evaluar la gravedad de la reacción, así como el rol de las pruebas clínicas o de laboratorio. Como aspectos de relevancia, se abordan el tratamiento de primera elección con adrenalina, instrucciones sobre autoinyectores y diferentes elementos para el tratamiento complementario y de segunda elección. También se refieren aspectos a considerar al dar de alta a un paciente y medidas de seguimiento, con un énfasis preventivo en la comunidad. Finalmente, se menciona el abordaje en el consultorio de alergia para decidir sobre opciones de inmunomodulación. ABSTRACT Anaphylaxis is a condition that requires immediate assistance for its resolution, it can occur in different settings: office, hospital, school, home or some other public space. The information contained herein forms part of known guidelines on prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Epidemiological aspects, triggers, risk factors and co-factors are addressed; physiopathological mechanisms that are translated into presentation phenotypes are explained in a didactic way. Clinical diagnosis is emphasized based on established criteria, classifications are mentioned to evaluate the severity of the reaction, as well as the role of clinical or laboratory tests. As relevant aspects, the first choice treatment with adrenaline, instructions on auto-injectors and different elements for the complementary and second choice treatment are dealt with. They also refer to aspects to consider when discharging a patient and followup measures, with a preventive emphasis on the community.
