Explosion of a massive, He-rich star at z=0.16
We present spectroscopic and photometric data of the peculiar SN 2001gh,
discovered by the 'Southern inTermediate Redshift ESO Supernova Search'
(STRESS) at a redshift z=0.16. SN 2001gh has relatively high luminosity at
maximum (M_B = -18.55 mag), while the light curve shows a broad peak. An
early-time spectrum shows an almost featureless, blue continuum with a few weak
and shallow P-Cygni lines that we attribute to HeI. HeI lines remain the only
spectral features visible in a subsequent spectrum, obtained one month later. A
remarkable property of SN 2001gh is the lack of significant spectral evolution
over the temporal window of nearly one month separating the two spectra. In
order to explain the properties of SN 2001gh, three powering mechanism are
explored, including radioactive decays of a moderately large amount of 56Ni,
magnetar spin-down, and interaction of SN ejecta with circumstellar medium. We
favour the latter scenario, with a SN Ib wrapped in a dense, circumstellar
shell. The fact that no models provide an excellent fit with observations,
confirms the troublesome interpretation of the nature of SN 2001gh. A rate
estimate for SN 2001gh-like event is also provided, confirming the intrinsic
rarity of these objects.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Accepted by MNRA
Energy and Momentum Distributions of a (2+1)-dimensional black hole background
Using Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and Weinberg energy-momentum
complexes we explicitly evaluate the energy and momentum distributions
associated with a non-static and circularly symmetric three-dimensional
spacetime. The gravitational background under study is an exact solution of the
Einstein's equations in the presence of a cosmological constant and a null
fluid. It can be regarded as the three-dimensional analogue of the Vaidya
metric and represents a non-static spinless (2+1)-dimensional black hole with
an outflux of null radiation. All four above-mentioned prescriptions give
exactly the same energy and momentum distributions for the specific black hole
background. Therefore, the results obtained here provide evidence in support of
the claim that for a given gravitational background, different energy-momentum
complexes can give identical results in three dimensions. Furthermore, in the
limit of zero cosmological constant the results presented here reproduce the
results obtained by Virbhadra who utilized the Landau-Lifshitz energy-momentum
complex for the same (2+1)-dimensional black hole background in the absence of
a cosmological constant.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, v3: references added, to appear in Int.J.Mod.Phys.
Europe’s perennial "outsiders": a processual approach to Roma stigmatization and ghettoization
This paper draws on the theoretical work of Norbert Elias and Loïc Wacquant in seeking to understand the stigmatized and marginalized position of the Roma population within Europe. The paper argues that the persistent persecution of Roma, reflected in social policy, cannot be understood without reference to long-term social processes, which shape the nature of the asymmetric power relations between Roma and non-Roma. Elias's theory of established-outsider relations is applied at the intra-state European level in arguing that Roma constitute a cross-border "outsider" group; with their intense stigmatization explained and perpetuated by a common set of collective fantasies which are maintained through complex group processes of disidentification, and which result in Roma being seen as of lesser human worth. Wacquant's theoretical concept of the "ghetto" is then drawn upon to show how the manifestations of stigmatization for the stigmatized are at once psychological, social and spatial. The paper suggests that the synthesis of the two theorists' relational, theoretical concepts allows for an approach that can expose the way in which power is exercised within and through group relations. Such an approach emphasizes the centrality of the interdependence between Roma and non-Roma, and the fluctuating power balance that characterises that relationship across time and space. The paper concludes that, while existing research focused on policy and outcomes is useful in understanding the negative contemporary experiences of Roma populations, they need to be understood in the context of wider social processes and historical continuities in seeking to elucidate how these processes shape policies and contribute to social and spatial marginalization
The supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410 and its progenitor
We report the results of our follow-up campaign of the supernova impostor PSN
J09132750+7627410, based on optical data covering . From the
beginning, the transient shows prominent narrow Balmer lines with P-Cygni
profiles, with a blue-shifted absorption component becoming more prominent with
time. Along the of the spectroscopic monitoring, broad
components are never detected in the hydrogen lines, suggesting that these
features are produced in slowly expanding material. The transient reaches an
absolute magnitude at maximum, a typical
luminosity for supernova impostors. Amateur astronomers provided
of archival observations of the host galaxy, NGC 2748. The
detection of the quiescent progenitor star in archival images obtained with the
Hubble Space Telescope suggests it to be an \msun white-yellow
supergiant.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material available in the source

Stability of skyrmions on curved surfaces in the presence of a magnetic field
We study the stability and energetics associated to skyrmions appear- ing as
excitations on curved surfaces. Using a continuum model we show that the
presence of cylindrically radial and azimuthal fields destabilizes the
skyrmions that appear in the absence of an external field. Weak fields generate
fractional skyrmions while strong magnetic fields yield stable 2{}-
skyrmions, which have their widths diminished by the magnetic field strength.
Under azimuthal fields vortex appear as stable states on the curved surface
Microwave-induced control of Free Electron Laser radiation
The dynamical response of a relativistic bunch of electrons injected in a
planar magnetic undulator and interacting with a counterpropagating
electromagnetic wave is studied. We demonstrate a resonance condition for which
the free electron laser (FEL) dynamics is strongly influenced by the presence
of the external field. It opens up the possibility of control of short
wavelength FEL emission characteristics by changing the parameters of the
microwave field without requiring change in the undulator's geometry or
configuration. Numerical examples, assuming realistic parameter values
analogous to those of the TTF-FEL, currently under development at DESY, are
given for possible control of the amplitude or the polarization of the emitted
radiation.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Cosmic Evolution of a Sample of Infrared Luminous Galaxies
A sample of faint, southern-hemisphere 60 μm sources
(f_(60) > 100mJy) detected as part of the IRAS Additional Observations has been used, in conjunction with CCD imaging, to produce a list of faint infrared galaxies. Redshifts of this sample of galaxies can be compared
with model predictions for several evolutionary scenarios; the comparisons show an excess of galaxies at higher redshifts (z > 0.1) compared with the predictions of models which assume no evolution of the infrared-galaxy luminosity function
