Ab initio study of charge transport through single oxygen molecules in atomic aluminum contacts
We present ab initio calculations of transport properties of atomic-sized
aluminum contacts in the presence of oxygen. The experimental situation is
modeled by considering a single oxygen atom (O) or one of the molecules O2 and
O3 bridging the gap between electrodes forming ideal, atomically sharp
pyramids. The transport characteristics are computed for these geometries with
increasing distances between the leads, simulating the opening of a break
junction. To facilitate comparison with experiments further, the vibrational
modes of the oxygen connected to the electrodes are studied. It is found that
in the contact regime the change of transport properties due to the presence of
oxygen is strong and should be detectable in experiments. All three types of
oxygen exhibit a comparable behavior in their vibrational frequencies and
conductances, which are well below the conductance of pure aluminum atomic
contacts. The conductance decreases for an increasing number of oxygen atoms.
In the tunneling regime the conductance decays exponentially with distance and
the decay length depends on whether or not oxygen is present in the junction.
This fact may provide a way to identify the presence of a gas molecule in
metallic atomic contacts.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures; added appendi
Accurate molecular energies by extrapolation of atomic energies using an analytic quantum mechanical model
Using a new analytic quantum mechanical method based on Slater's Xalpha
method, we show that a fairly accurate estimate of the total energy of a
molecule can be obtained from the exact energies of its constituent atoms. The
mean absolute error in the total energies thus determined for the G2 set of 56
molecules is about 16 kcal/mol, comparable to or better than some popular pure
and hybrid density functional models.Comment: 5 pages, REVTE

Physikalisch-technischer Anhang 58At the end of the 1970s the socialist party of the GDR was forced by high debts in foreign currency and risen import prices for fossil fuels to invest in indigenous energy sources and more rational energy applications. In this context and to take pace with the international development the SED began at the end of the 1970s and during the 1980s to support the use of geothermal heating.
This thesis consists of a chronological representation of the geothermal energy support in the GDR and contextualizes East German energy policy, heat supply and use of other renewable energy sources. Historical sources consist to the main extent on archive material and scientific papers from the GDR.
Until 1983 the SED tried to promote the application of heat pumps for heat supply. Even though several pilot projects like the heat pump station in Dresden were successfully erected, the political plan targets collided with material short supply and low demand in the heating business. After the sudden reduction of the political targets concerning heat pumps, special political interest was given to geothermal energy in higher depths since 1984. Therefore a special company the VEB Geothermie Neubrandenburg was founded. From the planned stations for heat supply of residential areas with a total power of 110 MW only 22% were actually finished until the end of the GDR in 1990. Those stations were located in Waren, Neubrandenburg and Prenzlau in the northern part of East Germany. Consequently failed the major project of a geothermal heat supply of the city of Schwerin. Reasons were excessive plan targets, the material short supply in the East German economy and a lack of experiences in the young technology.:1. Einleitung 3

The Role of Proinflammatory Cytokines and the Inflammasome in Pemphigus
Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune blistering disease which is therapeutically still a challenge due to severe co-morbidities of current treatment options and, in part, a refractory course and a high mortality when untreated. Most patients have IgG autoantibodies directed against desmosomal adhesion proteins like Desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) or Desmoglein 1 (Dsg1).
These antibodies lead to dissociation of keratinocytes also called acantholysis and subsequent blister formation of the skin. Although anti-Dsg IgG antibodies are present ubiquitously in the epidermis, blister sites occur at distinct areas of the skin and mucous membranes. Therefore, it is vital to elucidate the discrepancy between binding of pathogenic IgG autoantibodies but lack of blister formation, putatively by identification of local cofactors responsible for disease manifestation. Since cytokines of the innate immune system, like interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were detected in blister fluids and sera of patients, The hypothesis arose that the induction of innate inflammation might serve as cofactor for blister formation. Thus, the regional activation of the innate immune system could explain the discontinuous disease manifestation observed in PV patients.
To dissect the role of innate cytokines and activation of the inflammasome in PV first stimuli were identified that induce an innate response in keratinocytes. Hereby, irradiation with UVA, mechanical stress and TLR3 activation through Poly I:C represent promising candidates. Using an established keratinocyte fragmentation assay, the dissociation of the cell layer due to desmosome disruption was quantified to evaluate pathogenicity of antibody and cofactor.
Here it was observed that UVA and Poly I:C in addition to treatment with anti-Dsg3 antibodies resulted in a caspase-dependent significantly higher number of fragments compared to treatment with anti-Dsg3 alone.
In a more physiological setting, ex vivo skin explants were treated with UVA and anti-Dsg3
antibody as well. In this setting the treatment with anti-Dsg3 IgG led to suprabasal acantholysis.
The concentration of the antibody then was titrated to a subpathogenic concentration, meaning that acantholysis was not present. After irradiation with a non-toxic dose of UVA, acantholysis was observed histologically. Irradiation with UV alone did not lead to any blister formation.
Taken together, the hypothesis was set up that innate immune activation acts as a possible cofactor in the disease manifestation of PV
Tilt-angle landscapes and temperature dependence of the conductance in biphenyl-dithiol single-molecule junctions
Using a density-functional-based transport method we study the conduction
properties of several biphenyl-derived dithiol (BPDDT) molecules wired to gold
electrodes. The BPDDT molecules differ in their side groups, which control the
degree of conjugation of the pi-electron system. We have analyzed the
dependence of the low-bias zero-temperature conductance on the tilt angle phi
between the two phenyl ring units, and find that it follows closely a
cos^2(phi) law, as expected from an effective pi-orbital coupling model. We
show that the tilting of the phenyl rings results in a decrease of the
zero-temperature conductance by roughly two orders of magnitude, when going
from a planar conformation to a configuration in which the rings are
perpendicular. In addition we demonstrate that the side groups, apart from
determining phi, have no influence on the conductance. All this is in agreement
with the recent experiment by Venkataraman et al. [Nature 442, 904 (2006)].
Finally, we study the temperature dependence of both the conductance and its
fluctuations and find qualitative differences between the examined molecules.
In this analysis we consider two contributions to the temperature behavior, one
coming from the Fermi functions and the other one from a thermal average over
different contact configurations. We illustrate that the fluctuations of the
conductance due to temperature-induced changes in the geometric structure of
the molecule can be reduced by an appropriate design.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
Influence of vibrations on electron transport through nanoscale contacts
In this article we present a novel semi-analytical approach to calculate
first-order electron-vibration coupling constants within the framework of
density functional theory. It combines analytical expressions for the
first-order derivative of the Kohn-Sham operator with respect to nuclear
displacements with coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham theory to determine the
derivative of the electronic density matrix. This allows us to efficiently
compute accurate electron-vibration coupling constants. We apply our approach
to describe inelastic electron tunneling spectra of metallic and molecular
junctions. A gold junction bridged by an atomic chain is used to validate the
developed method, reproducing established experimental and theoretical results.
For octane-dithiol and octane-diamine single-molecule junctions we discuss the
influence of the anchoring group and mechanical stretching on the inelastic
electron tunneling spectra.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Are hemispherical caps of boron-nitride nanotubes possible?
We report all-electron, density-functional calculations with large Gaussian
polarization basis set of the recently synthesized octahedral B24N24 cage that
is perfectly round by symmetry, and boron-nitride (BN) clusters that its
existence might suggest. We consider whether it is energetically possible that
the two halves of this round cage could cap the BN nanotubes, modeled by B28N28
and B32N32. The energetics show that BN nanotubes with such round caps, are
only slightly less favorable than the BN clusters containing six squares as the
only defects in the otherwise perfect hexagonal lattice. A larger B96N96
octahedral cage formed from B24N24 by adding sufficient hexagons to isolate all
squares is not very favorable energetically. The squares protrude noticeably
from its otherwise round surface.Comment: Uses elsart.cls (Elsevier Science), (Better pictures can be obtained

Exploiting the CH-π interactions in supramolecular hydrogels of aromatic carbohydrate amphiphiles
A novel class of supramolecular hydrogels derived from amino sugars is reported, where the self-assembly of aromatic carbohydrate amphiphiles is driven by CH-π interactions, rather than π–π stacking and H-bonding associated with gelators based on aromatic peptide amphiphiles. Spectroscopic data is provided as evidence for this mode of self-assembly and in silico studies revealed that a combination of CH-π and T-stacking of the fluorenyl groups contribute to the formation of the aggregated structures
Visible photodissociation spectroscopy of PAH cations and derivatives in the PIRENEA experiment
The electronic spectra of gas-phase cationic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs), trapped in the Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance cell of the
PIRENEA experiment, have been measured by multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy
in the 430-480 nm spectral range using the radiation of a mid-band optical
parametric oscillator laser. We present here the spectra recorded for different
species of increasing size, namely the pyrene cation (C16H10+), the
1-methylpyrene cation (CH3-C16H9+), the coronene cation (C24H12+), and its
dehydrogenated derivative C24H10+. The experimental results are interpreted
with the help of time-dependent density functional theory calculations and
analysed using spectral information on the same species obtained from matrix
isolation spectroscopy data. A kinetic Monte Carlo code has also been used, in
the case of pyrene and coronene cations, to estimate the absorption
cross-sections of the measured electronic transitions. Gas-phase spectra of
highly reactive species such as dehydrogenated PAH cations are reported for the
first time
