Transient charge and energy flow in the wide-band limit
The wide-band limit is a commonly used approximation to analyze transport
through nanoscale devices. In this work we investigate its applicability to the
study of charge and heat transport through molecular break junctions exposed to
voltage biases and temperature gradients. We find that while this approximation
faithfully describes the long-time charge and heat transport, it fails to
characterize the short-time behavior of the junction. In particular, we find
that the charge current flowing through the device shows a discontinuity when a
temperature gradient is applied, while the energy flow is discontinuous when a
voltage bias is switched on and even diverges when the junction is exposed to
both a temperature gradient and a voltage bias. We provide an explanation for
this pathological behavior and propose two possible solutions to this problem.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
Non-collinear spin-spiral phase for the uniform electron gas within Reduced-Density-Matrix-Functional Theory
The non-collinear spin-spiral density wave of the uniform electron gas is
studied in the framework of Reduced-Density-Matrix-Functional Theory. For the
Hartree-Fock approximation, which can be obtained as a limiting case of
Reduced-Density-Matrix-Functional Theory, Overhauser showed a long time ago
that the paramagnetic state of the electron gas is unstable with respect to the
formation of charge or spin density waves. Here we not only present a detailed
numerical investigation of the spin-spiral density wave in the Hartree-Fock
approximation but also investigate the effects of correlations on the
spin-spiral density wave instability by means of a recently proposed
density-matrix functional.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Radiation studies for GaAs in the ATLAS Inner Detector
We estimate the hardness factors and the equivalent 1 MeV neutron fluences
for hadrons fluences expected at the GaAs positions wheels in the ATLAS Inner
Detector. On this basis the degradation of the GaAs particle detectors made
from different substrates as a function of years LHC operation is predicted.Comment: 11 pages, 6 Postscript figures, uses elsart.cls, submitted to Nucl.

Handling and analysis of ices in cryostats and glove boxes in view of cometary samples
Comet nucleus sample return mission and other return missions from planets and satellites need equipment for handling and analysis of icy samples at low temperatures under vacuum or protective gas. Two methods are reported which were developed for analysis of small icy samples and which are modified for larger samples in cometary matter simulation experiments (KOSI). A conventional optical cryostat system was modified to allow for transport of samples at 5 K, ion beam irradiation, and measurement in an off-line optical spectrophotometer. The new system consists of a removable window plug containing nozzles for condensation of water and volatiles onto a cold finger. This plug can be removed in a vacuum system, changed against another plug (e.g., with other windows (IR, VIS, VUV) or other nozzles). While open, the samples can be treated under vacuum with cooling by manipulators (cut, removal, sample taking, irradiation with light, photons, or ions). After bringing the plug back, the samples can be moved to another site of analysis. For handling the 30 cm diameter mineral-ice samples from the KOSI experiments an 80x80x80 cm glove box made out of plexiglass was used. The samples were kept in a liquid nitrogen bath, which was filled from the outside. A stream a dry N2 and evaporating gas from the bath purified the glove box from impurity gases and, in particular, H2O, which otherwise would condense onto the samples
Excited states in bilayer graphene quantum dots
We report on ground- and excited state transport through an electrostatically
defined few-hole quantum dot in bilayer graphene in both parallel and
perpendicular applied magnetic fields. A remarkably clear level scheme for the
two-particle spectra is found by analyzing finite bias spectroscopy data within
a two-particle model including spin and valley degrees of freedom. We identify
the two-hole ground-state to be a spin-triplet and valley-singlet state. This
spin alignment can be seen as Hund's rule for a valley-degenerate system, which
is fundamentally different to quantum dots in carbon nano tubes and GaAs-based
quantum dots. The spin-singlet excited states are found to be valley-triplet
states by tilting the magnetic field with respect to the sample plane. We
quantify the exchange energy to be 0.35meV and measure a valley and spin
g-factor of 36 and 2, respectively
Intra- and Interband Electron Scattering in the Complex Hybrid Topological Insulator Bismuth Bilayer on BiSe
The band structure, intra- and interband scattering processes of the
electrons at the surface of a bismuth-bilayer on BiSe have been
experimentally investigated by low-temperature Fourier-transform scanning
tunneling spectroscopy. The observed complex quasiparticle interference
patterns are compared to a simulation based on the spin-dependent joint density
of states approach using the surface-localized spectral function calculated
from first principles as the only input. Thereby, the origin of the
quasiparticle interferences can be traced back to intraband scattering in the
bismuth bilayer valence band and BiSe conduction band, and to interband
scattering between the two-dimensional topological state and the
bismuth-bilayer valence band. The investigation reveals that the bilayer band
gap, which is predicted to host one-dimensional topological states at the edges
of the bilayer, is pushed several hundred milli-electronvolts above the Fermi
level. This result is rationalized by an electron transfer from the bilayer to
BiSe which also leads to a two-dimensional electron state in the
BiSe conduction band with a strong Rashba spin-splitting, coexisting
with the topological state and bilayer valence band.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
