A Standard Input Format for Computer Codes Which Solve Stochastic Programs with Recourse and a Library of Utilities to Simplify its Use
We explain our suggestions for standardizing input formats for computer codes which solve stochastic programs with recourse. The main reason to set some conventions is to allow programs implementing different methods of solution to be used interchangeably. The general philosophy behind our design is a) to remain fairly faithful to the de facto standard for the statement of LP problems established by IBM for use with MPSX and subsequently adopted by the authors of MINOS, b) to provide sufficient flexibility so that a variety of problems may be expressed in the standard format, c) to allow problems originally formulated as deterministic LP to be converted to stochastic problems with a minimum of effort, d) to permit new options to be added as the need arises, and e) to provide some routines to facilitate the task of reading files specified in the standard format
Does the Hubble Redshift Flip Photons and Gravitons?
Due to the Hubble redshift, photon energy, chiefly in the form of CMBR
photons, is currently disappearing from the universe at the rate of nearly
10^55 erg s^-1. An ongoing problem in cosmology concerns the fate of this
energy. In one interpretation it is irretrievably lost, i.e., energy is not
conserved on the cosmic scale. Here we consider a different possibility which
retains universal energy conservation. If gravitational energy is redshifted in
the same manner as photons, then it can be shown that the cosmic redshift
removes gravitational energy from space at about the same rate as photon
energy. Treating gravitational potential energy conventionally as negative
energy, it is proposed that the Hubble shift 'flips' positive energy (photons)
to negative energy (gravitons) and vice versa. The lost photon energy would
thus be directed towards gravitation, making gravitational energy wells more
negative. Conversely, within astrophysical bodies of sufficient size, the
flipping of gravitons to photons would give rise to a 'Hubble luminosity' of
magnitude -UH, where U is the internal gravitational potential energy of the
object and H the Hubble constant. Evidence of such an energy release is
presented in bodies ranging from planets, white dwarfs and neutron stars to

First evidence of cryptotephra in palaeoenvironmental records associated with Norse occupation sites in Greenland
The Norse/Viking occupation of Greenland is part of a dispersal of communities across the North Atlantic coincident with the supposed Medieval Warm Period of the late 1st millennium AD. The abandonment of the Greenland settlements has been linked to climatic deterioration in the Little Ice Age as well as other possible explanations. There are significant dating uncertainties over the time of European abandonment of Greenland and the potential influence of climatic deterioration. Dating issues largely revolve around radiocarbon chronologies for Norse settlements and associated mire sequences close to settlement sites. Here we show the potential for moving this situation forward by a combination of palynological, radiocarbon and cryptotephra analyses of environmental records close to three âiconicâ Norse sites in the former Eastern Settlement of Greenland â Herjolfsnes, Hvalsey and GarĂ°ar (the modern Igaliku). While much work remains to be undertaken, our results show that palynological evidence can provide a useful marker for both the onset and end of Norse occupation in the region, while the radiocarbon chronologies for these sequences remain difficult. Significantly, we here demonstrate the potential for cryptotephra to become a useful tool in resolving the chronology of Norse occupation, when coupled with palynology. For the first time, we show that cryptotephra are present within palaeoenvironmental sequences located within or close to Norse settlement ruin-groups, with tephra horizons detected at all three sites. While shard concentrations were small at Herjolfsnes, concentrations sufficient for geochemical analyses were detected at Igaliku and Hvalsey. WDS-EPMA analyses of these tephra indicate that, unlike the predominantly Icelandic tephra sources reported in the Greenland ice core records, the tephra associated with the Norse sites correlate more closely with volcanic centres in the Aleutians and Cascades. Recent investigations of cryptotephra dispersal from North American centres, along with our new findings, point to the potential for cryptotephra to facilitate hypothesis testing, providing a key chronological tool for refining the timing of Norse activities in Greenland (e.g. abandonment) and of environmental contexts and drivers (e.g. climate forcing)
Hip fracture in the elderly multidisciplinary rehabilitation (FEMuR) feasibility study: testing the use of routinely collected data for future health economic evaluations
Background: Health economic evaluations rely on the accurate measurement of health service resource use in order to calculate costs. These are usually measured with patient completed questionnaires using instruments such as the Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI). These rely on participants' recall and can be burdensome to complete. Health service activity data are routinely captured by electronic databases.The aim was to test methods for obtaining these data and compare with those data collected using the CSRI, within a feasibility study of an enhanced rehabilitation intervention following hip fracture (Fracture in the Elderly Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation: FEMuR). Methods: Primary care activity including prescribing data was obtained from the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank and secondary care activity (Emergency Department attendances, out-patient visits and in-patient days) directly from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), North Wales, UK. These data were compared with patient responses from the CSRI using descriptive statistics and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: It was possible to compare health service resource use data for 49 out of 61 participants in the FEMuR study. For emergency department (ED) attendances, records matched in 23 (47%) cases, 21 (43%) over-reported on electronic records compared with CSRI and five participants (10%) under-reported, with an overall ICC of 0.42. For out-patient episodes, records matched in only six cases, 28 participants over-reported on electronic records compared with CSRI and 15 (12%) under-reported, with an overall ICC of only 0.27. For in-patient days, records matched exactly in only five cases (10%), but if an error margin of 7 days was allowed, then agreement rose to 39 (66%) cases, and the overall ICC for all data was 0.88.It was only possible to compare prescribing data for 12 participants. For prescribing data, the SAIL data reported 117 out of 118 items (99%) and the CSRI only 89 (79%) items. Conclusions: The use of routinely collected data has the potential to improve the efficiency of trials and other studies. Although the methodology to make the data available has been demonstrated, the data obtained was incomplete and the validity of using this method remains to be demonstrated. The Importance of Time Congruity in the Organisation.
In 1991 Kaufman, Lane, and Lindquist proposed that time congruity in terms of an individual's time preferences and the time use methods of an organisation would lead to satisfactory performance and enhancement of quality of work and general life. The research reported here presents a study which uses commensurate person and job measures of time personality in an organisational setting to assess the effects of time congruity on one aspect of work life, job-related affective well-being. Results show that time personality and time congruity were found to have direct effects on well-being and the influence of time congruity was found to be mediated through time personality, thus contributing to the personâjob (PâJ) fit literature which suggests that direct effects are often more important than indirect effects. The study also provides some practical examples of ways to address some of the previously cited methodological issues in PâJ fit research
Lagrangian Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin treatment of collective coordinates
The Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) treatment for the quantization of
collective coordinates is considered in the Lagrangian formalism. The motion of
a particle in a Riemannian manifold is studied in the case when the classical
solutions break a non-abelian global invariance of the action. Collective
coordinates are introduced, and the resulting gauge theory is quantized in the
BRST antifield formalism. The partition function is computed perturbatively to
two-loops, and it is shown that the results are independent of gauge-fixing

New approach for phylogenetic tree recovery based on genome-scale metabolic networks
[EN] A wide range of applications and research has been done with genome-scale metabolic models. In this work, we describe an innovative methodology for comparing metabolic networks constructed from genome-scale metabolic models and how to apply this comparison in order to infer evolutionary distances between different organisms. Our methodology allows a quantification of the metabolic differences between different species from a broad range of families and even kingdoms. Unravelling social constructionism
Social constructionist research is an area of rapidly expanding influence that has brought together theorists from a range of different disciplines. At the same time, however, it has fuelled the development of a new set of divisions. There would appear to be an increasing uneasiness about the implications of a thoroughgoing constructionism, with some regarding it as both theoretically parasitic and politically paralysing. In this paper I review these debates and clarify some of the issues involved. My main argument is that social constructionism is not best understood as a unitary paradigm and that one very important difference is between what Edwards (1997) calls its ontological and epistemic forms. I argue that an appreciation of this distinction not only exhausts many of the disputes that currently divide the constructionist community, but also takes away from the apparent radicalism of much of this work
Spin Glass Behavior in RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10
The dynamics of the magnetic properties of polycrystalline
RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (Ru-1222) have been studied by ac susceptibility and dc
magnetization measurements, including relaxation and ageing studies. Ru-1222 is
a reported magneto-superconductor with Ru spins magnetic ordering at
temperatures near 100 K and superconductivity in Cu-O2 planes below Tc ~ 40 K.
The exact nature of Ru spins magnetic ordering is still debated and no
conclusion has been reached yet. In this work, a frequency-dependent cusp was
observed in ac susceptibility vs. T measurements, which is interpreted as a
spin glass transition. The change in the cusp position with frequency follows
the Vogel-Fulcher law, which is commonly accepted to describe a spin glass with
magnetically interacting clusters. Such interpretation is supported by
themoremanaent magnetization (TRM) measurements at T = 60 K. TRM relaxations
are well described by a stretched exponential relation, and present significant

Sun exposure behaviour, seasonal vitamin D deficiency, and relationship to bone health in adolescents
YesContext: Vitamin D is essential for bone health in adolescence, where there is rapid bone mineral
content accrual. As cutaneous sun-exposure provides vitamin D, there is no recommended oral intake
for UK adolescents.
Objective: Assess seasonal vitamin D status and its contributors in white Caucasian adolescents, and
examine bone health in those found deficient.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
Setting: Six schools in Greater Manchester, UK.
Participants: 131 adolescents, 12â15 years.
Intervention(s): Seasonal assessment of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), personal sunexposure
and dietary vitamin D. Adolescents deficient (25OHD <10 ng/mL/25 nmol/L) in â„one
season underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (lumbar spine, femoral neck), with bone mineral
apparent density (BMAD) correction for size, and peripheral quantitative computed tomography
(distal radius) for volumetric (v)BMD.
Main Outcome Measure: Serum 25OHD; BMD.
Results: Mean 25OHD was highest in September: 24.1 (SD 6.9) ng/mL and lowest in January: 15.5
(5.9) ng/mL. Over the year, 16% were deficient in â„one season and 79% insufficient (25OHD <20
ng/mL/50 nmol/L) including 28% in September. Dietary vitamin D was low year-round while
personal sun-exposure was seasonal and predominantly across the school week. Holidays accounted
for 17% variation in peak 25OHD (p<0.001). Nineteen adolescents underwent bone assessment,
which showed low femoral neck BMAD versus matched reference data (p=0.0002), 3 with Z†-2.0
distal radius trabecular vBMD.
Conclusions: Sun-exposure levels failed to provide adequate vitamin D, ~one-quarter adolescents
insufficient even at summer-peak. Seasonal vitamin D deficiency was prevalent and those affected
had low BMD. Recommendations on vitamin D acquisition are indicated in this age-group.The Bupa Foundation (Grant number TBF-M10-017)
