Home at last: the enigmatic genera Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon (Compositae, Mutisioideae, Mutisieae, Adenocaulinae)

    Get PDF
The genera Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon (Compositae) have distinct but complex histories and both have been placed in a number of tribes across the family. For the first time the two genera are included in a molecular study and the results show that they are best placed in the tribe Mutisieae s.s. and are the only genera in the re-instated subtribe Adenocaulinae. When described, this subtribe contained only Adenocaulon and was found in the Inuleae. The study also confirms one of the conclusions of a recent morphological study that Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon are sister taxa. Past difficulties in tribal assignment are attributed to the distinct and unusual morphology of each genus. Both genera and the subtribe are described and a key to separate the genera is provided.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    Complex electronic voting systems

    Get PDF
An on-site electronic voting system is analyzed for distributed environments, with multiple simultaneous election models and different types of voters, used for periods longer than one day and with real-time counting of votes. This type of complex study cases is related to requirements of the UNLP combining various organizational levels (professors, assistants in charge of assignments, graduate aides, external graduates, students, and non-teaching staff) in elections where each of these groups has different characteristics and representations for governmental bodies: Assembly, High Council, Boards of Directors and Students Government Associations at the different Schools. Representation is different, among other aspects, in relation to numbers and the ways in which majority and minority are expressed. These functional complexities are added to the geographical distribution context of the election locations, with several Schools having regional centers in the Province of Buenos Aires, and the duration of the elections, since they typically take place in periods ranging from one to three days.Trabajo presentado en el XVIII Congreso Argentino de Ciencias de la Computación-CACIC 2012, realizado los días 8 al 12 de octubre 2012 en Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Influence of Pectin as a green polymer electrolyte on the transport properties of Chitosan-Pectin membranes

    Get PDF
Novel blend membranes have been prepared from Chitosan (CH), Pectin (PEC) andtheir mixtures. The obtained samples were cross-linked and sulfonated beforecharacterization. The results show that CH/PEC membranes display structural changes on the chemical and physical properties as a function of composition. DSC analysis reveals an endothermic peak due to the scission of the ionic pairs between carboxylic groups and ammonium groups, which produces a strong change on physical properties such as methanol permeability and proton conductivity. The methanol permeability decreases with the amount of Pectin from (4.24±0.04)x10-6 cm2/s for pure Chitosan membrane to (1.51±0.03)x10-6 cm2/s for blend CH/PEC membranes when the amount of Pectin is 50% (v/v). The proton conductivities of the blend membranes follow a similar behavior. For a pure CH membrane the conductivity is 2.44x10-3 S/cm, decreasing with pectin content until the composition 50/50 (v/v), in which the conductivity drops almost one order of magnitude.Fil: Pasini Cabello, Sergio David. Get PDF
The adaptation of climate change phenomenon is an issue of great importance in the actual context of public policies for urban planning. When it comes to sites of cultural-historical value and cultural heritage assets, the effect of climate change can pose a major challenge to ensuring their conservation. Thus, the present paper aims to present a narrative literature review of scientific articles and reference bibliography about the impact of climate change on heritage, critically comparing the Brazilian case with the international context, especially the European one. It was stipulated as the temporal delimitation of the last two decades, between 2000 and 2020, five years after the first global climate conference of the UN (United Nations), with the consolidation of the climate commitment and the expansion of signatory countries. The applied methodology is the bibliographic review and compilation of the data obtained from the publications, making use of the critical-comparative analysis. As a result, it is expected to contribute to the state of the art on the subject, reflecting on the aspects necessary to advance the subject in the Brazilian sphere.

Numerical simulation of vibrated granular gases under realistic boundary conditions

A variant of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method is used to study the behavior of a granular gas, in two and three dimensions, under varying density, restitution coefficient, and inelasticity regimes, for realistic vibrating wall conditions. Our results agree quite well with recent experimental data. The role of the energy injection mechanism is discussed, as well as the behavior of state-functions, such as pressure, under realistic boundary conditions. Upon a density increase, we find signals of a clustering transition.Comment: Latex, 12 EPS figures (to appear in Physica A
