Three Methods of Determining Hardness of Increment Core Segments
Three methods were devised to measure the hardness of small wood samples: a sanding test, a diamond point indentation test, and a saw blade tooth deformity test. Based on step-wise multiple regression analysis with 19 and with five important independent variables, the sanding test was best, followed by the indentation test. The saw blade test gave poor results and was discarded. The order of important independent variables among the four plots analyzed individually showed a nearly perfect relationship with the sanding test, but no consistent order of the variables among plots for the indentation test. Again this indicated that the sanding test was best

Deconvolution of Interplanetary Transport of Solar Energetic Particles
We address the problem of deconvolving the effects of interplanetary
transport on observed intensity and anisotropy profiles of solar energetic
particles with the goal of determining the time profile and spectrum of
particle injection near the Sun as well as the interplanetary scattering mean
free path. Semi-automated techniques have been developed to quantitatively
determine the best fit injection profile, assuming (1) a general piecewise
linear profile or (2) a Reid profile of the form
[C/(t-t_0)]exp[-A/(t-t_0)-(t-t_0)/B]. The two assumptions for the form of the
injection profile yielded similar results when we tested the techniques using
ISEE 3 proton data from the solar flare events of July 20, 1981 (gradual
flare), and January 2, 1982 (impulsive flare). For the former event, the
duration of injection was much shorter for protons of higher energy (75-147
MeV), which may be interpreted as indicating that the coronal mass
ejection-driven shock lost the ability to accelerate protons to 100 MeV
after traveling beyond a certain distance from the Sun.Comment: 14 pages + 5 figures, LaTeX style files included, to appear in J.

Viewpoints of pedestrians with and without cognitive impairment on shared zones and zebra crossings
Background: Shared zones are characterised by an absence of traditional markers that segregate the road and footpath. Negotiation of a shared zone relies on an individual’s ability to perceive, assess and respond to environmental cues. This ability may be impacted by impairments in cognitive processing, which may lead to individuals experiencing increased anxiety when negotiating a shared zone. Method: Q method was used in order to identify and explore the viewpoints of pedestrians, with and without cognitive impairments as they pertain to shared zones. Results: Two viewpoints were revealed. Viewpoint one was defined by “confident users” while viewpoint two was defined by users who “know what [they] are doing but drivers might not”. Discussion: Overall, participants in the study would not avoid shared zones. Pedestrians with intellectual disability were, however, not well represented by either viewpoint, suggesting that shared zones may pose a potential barrier to participation for this group
The touring reader: understanding the bibliophile's experience of literary tourism
This research explores the literary enthusiast’s experience of planning and undertaking literary inspired trips. The research reconceptualises the dominant figure of the literary pilgrim, inspired to visit sites associated with favourite authors, by using detailed results from 30 open-ended surveys distributed to delegates at a literary conference. The findings indicate that these keen readers prefer to plan their own trips and shun organised attractions and mainstream tourist information in favour of employing the texts themselves as source material. Respondents then feed back their experiences into the re-reading of the literary text. These findings are analysed using the concept of concretisation borrowed from literary theory. This concept, which has not been used in previous tourist studies, reflects the experience of these visitors who are using travel to solidify their reading of favourite books. This research therefore highlights the interdependence of texts and travels and emphasises the important role that imagination plays in the experience and recollection of tourist trips
International home economics
The conference was planned to serve the interests of those who wish to work in home economics programs abroad and those who are concerned with the education of international students in the universities and colleges of the United States. Approximately 165 home economists from other states and from foreign countries I including the African and Latin American countries I participated in the conference.https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/card_reports/1026/thumbnail.jp
