    Effect of physical aging on the low-frequency vibrational density of states of a glassy polymer

    The effects of the physical aging on the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of a polymeric glass is studied. The VDOS of a poly(methyl methacrylate) glass at low-energy (<15 meV), was determined from inelastic neutron scattering at low-temperature for two different physical thermodynamical states. One sample was annealed during a long time at temperature lower than Tg, and another was quenched from a temperature higher than Tg. It was found that the VDOS around the boson peak, relatively to the one at higher energy, decreases with the annealing at lower temperature than Tg, i.e., with the physical aging.Comment: To be published in Europhys.     Quantifying the impact of an inference model in Bayesian phylogenetics

    Phylogenetic trees are currently routinely reconstructed from an alignment of character sequences (usually nucleotide sequences). Bayesian tools, such as MrBayes, RevBayes and BEAST2, have gained much popularity over the last decade, as they allow joint estimation of the posterior distribution of the phylogenetic trees and the parameters of the underlying inference model. An important ingredient of these Bayesian approaches is the species tree prior. In principle, the Bayesian framework allows for comparing different tree priors, which may elucidate the macroevolutionary processes underlying the species tree. In practice, however, only macroevolutionary models that allow for fast computation of the prior probability are used. The question is how accurate the tree estimation is when the real macroevolutionary processes are substantially different from those assumed in the tree prior. Here we present pirouette, a free and open-source r package that assesses the inference error made by Bayesian phylogenetics for a given macroevolutionary diversification model. pirouette makes use of BEAST2, but its philosophy applies to any Bayesian phylogenetic inference tool. We describe pirouette's usage providing full examples in which we interrogate a model for its power to describe another. Last, we discuss the results obtained by the examples and their interpretation

    Quantum partition noise of photo-created electron-hole pairs

    We show experimentally that even when no bias voltage is applied to a quantum conductor, the electronic quantum partition noise can be investigated using GHz radiofrequency irradiation of a reservoir. Using a Quantum Point Contact configuration as the ballistic conductor we are able to make an accurate determination of the partition noise Fano factor resulting from the photo-assisted shot noise. Applying both voltage bias and rf irradiation we are able to make a definitive quantitative test of the scattering theory of photo-assisted shot noise.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Finite element analysis of hydrogen retention in ITER plasma facing components using FESTIM

    The behaviour of hydrogen isotopes in ITER monoblocks was studied using the code FESTIM (Finite Element Simulation of Tritium In Materials) which is introduced in this publication. FESTIM has been validated by reproducing experimental data and the Method of Manufactured Solutions was used for analytical verification. Following relevant plasma scenarios, both transient heat transfer and hydrogen isotopes (HIs) diffusion have been simulated in order to assess HIs retention in monoblocks. Relevant materials properties have been used. Each plasma cycle is composed of a current ramp up, a current plateau, a current ramp down and a resting phase before the following shot. 100 cycles are simulated. The total HIs inventory in the tokamak during resting phases reaches 1.8 x 10(-3) mgwhereas during the implantation phases it keeps increasing as a power law of time. Particle flux on the cooling channel of the monoblock is also computed. The breakthrough time is estimated to be t = 1 x 10(5) s which corresponds to 24 cycles. Relevance of 2D modelling has been demonstrated by comparing the total HIs inventory obtained by 2D and 1D simulations. Using 1D simulations, a relative error is observed compared to 2D simulations which can reach -25% during the resting phase. The error during implantation phases keeps increasing.Peer reviewe

    The Spatial Limitations of Current Neutral Models of Biodiversity

    The unified neutral theory of biodiversity and biogeography is increasingly accepted as an informative null model of community composition and dynamics. It has successfully produced macro-ecological patterns such as species-area relationships and species abundance distributions. However, the models employed make many unrealistic auxiliary assumptions. For example, the popular spatially implicit version assumes a local plot exchanging migrants with a large panmictic regional source pool. This simple structure allows rigorous testing of its fit to data. In contrast, spatially explicit models assume that offspring disperse only limited distances from their parents, but one cannot as yet test the significance of their fit to data. Here we compare the spatially explicit and the spatially implicit model, fitting the most-used implicit model (with two levels, local and regional) to data simulated by the most-used spatially explicit model (where offspring are distributed about their parent on a grid according to either a radially symmetric Gaussian or a ‘fat-tailed’ distribution). Based on these fits, we express spatially implicit parameters in terms of spatially explicit parameters. This suggests how we may obtain estimates of spatially explicit parameters from spatially implicit ones. The relationship between these parameters, however, makes no intuitive sense. Furthermore, the spatially implicit model usually fits observed species-abundance distributions better than those calculated from the spatially explicit model's simulated data. Current spatially explicit neutral models therefore have limited descriptive power. However, our results suggest that a fatter tail of the dispersal kernel seems to improve the fit, suggesting that dispersal kernels with even fatter tails should be studied in future. We conclude that more advanced spatially explicit models and tools to analyze them need to be developed
