Evaluation of high-concentrate diets that vary in physically effective neutral detergent fibre for finishing lambs
The objective of this research was to evaluate lamb diets with a high proportion of concentrate and various levels of physically effective neutral detergent fibre (NDF) using tropical ingredients. Four diets were formulated: D1 with 16.5% physically effective NDF (peNDF), D2 with 21.4% peNDF, D3 with 23.3% peNDF, and D4 with 24.6% peNDF. Twenty male Santa Inês lambs at four months old with an average liveweight (LW) of 18.6 ± 3.4 kg were fed for 49 days. There were no differences (P >0.05) among the diets in dry matter (DM) intake. Crude protein (CP) intake, relative to either LW or metabolic live weight (LW0.75) or LW, was greater (P ≤0.05) for D2 and D3 than for D1 or D4. Lower (P ≤0.05) NDF intake, relative to LW0.75 or LW, was lower for D1 than for the other diets. Selection indexes (SIs) were similar (P >0.05) among diets. Animals that consumed D1 had less (P ≤0.05) rumination time per bolus. Meaningful variations were not observed in performance and efficiency of finishing lambs that were related to differences in peNDF among the diets. Santa Inês lambs were able to adapt to diets with low levels of peNDF by increasing rumination time as a consequence of increased fibre consumption and greater particle size selection
Human dimensions of climate change: the vulnerability of small farmers in the Amazon
This paper argues for a twofold perspective on human adaptation to climate change in the Amazon. First, we need to understand the processes that mediate perceptions of environmental change and the behavioural responses at the levels of the individual and the local population. Second, we should take into account the process of production and dissemination of global and national climate information and models to regional and local populations, especially small farmers. We discuss the sociocultural and environmental diversity of small farmers in the Amazon and their susceptibility to climate change associated with drought, flooding and accidental fire. Using survey, ethnographic and archival data from study areas in the state of Pará, we discuss farmers' sources of knowledge and long-term memory of climatic events, drought and accidental fire; their sources of climate information; their responses to drought and fire events and the impact of changing rainfall patterns on land use. We highlight the challenges of adaptation to climate change created by the influence of migration and family turnover on collective action and memory, the mismatch of scales used to monitor and disseminate climate data and the lack of extension services to translate large-scale forecasts to local needs. We found that for most farmers, memories of extended drought tend to decrease significantly after 3 years. Over 50% of the farmers interviewed in 2002 did not remember as significant the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) drought of 1997/1998. This helps explain why approximately 40% of the farmers have not changed their land-use behaviours in the face of the strongest ENSO event of the twentieth century
Static analysis of a lamppost according to Eurocode EN-40
When people move around a town, at some point in their journey they need to cross the road using a dedicated crosswalk. However, crossing is not always done safely due to weather conditions, lack of visibility or distraction. The VALLPASS project, aims to install two lampposts in opposite positions to the direction of crossing, with various functionalities and technological innovations, creating a luminous tunnel for the safe passage of pedestrians. To verify the mechanical resistance of the lighting poles, numerical simulations were performed using the finite element method, where the boundary conditions considered the criteria defined by the European standard EN-40 "Lighting Columns". This standard specifies the loads acting on the column, namely the horizontal forces due to the action of wind according to standard NP EN 1991-1-4:2010 and the vertical forces due to the self-weight of the entire structure. Considering a lighting pole with a square lower section and a cylindrical upper section, with a total height of 7 meters and with a support structure for photovoltaic panels, according to the static analysis performed, a maximum combination of axial and bending stresses of 138.74MPa, was obtained in the connection zone between the square section and the pole shaft. The maximum displacement of 6.9cm, was obtained at the free ends of the photovoltaic panel support structure and a minimum factor of safety of 1.64 in the zone where the combination of axial and bending stresses is more severe. The authors would like to thank the NORTE-01-0247-FEDER-113439 project for the financial support for this

Thermal analysis for testing underground battery location
The energy storage batteries, employed in solar systems installed on lampposts, are usually placed in devices such as switchboards fixed at an elevation near the top of the column. However, this storage solution becomes inefficient, because it is not possible to guarantee the control of the working temperature of the batteries, due to the low thermal insulation capacity of these storage devices. In this sense, an underground compartment made of concrete, steel plate and rock wool were created, embedded in the foundation of the lamppost, with the purpose of using geothermal energy to maintain an adequate temperature inside the compartment. To verify the temperature inside the battery storage compartment, a thermal analysis was performed, where heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation was considered. Analyses were performed in steady state, and later, transient state, considering the initial temperatures of the thermal study in the previous steady state. With a storage volume of 1m3 and the base of the compartment at a depth of 2m, it was verified that it is possible to use geothermal energy to cool or heat, depending on the season, a system through geothermal energy. Considering a typical day in July, with room temperature of 35oC, a reduction of approximately 8oC was obtained inside the storage compartment, compared to the ambient temperature. The authors would like to thank the NORTE-01-0247-FEDER-113439 project for the financial support for this work. Application of Flow-Injection Spectrophotometry to Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analyses
The discovery of new drugs, especially when many samples have to be analyzed in the minimum of time, demand the improvement or development of new analytical methods. Various techniques may be employed for this purpose. In this context, this chapter gathers the collection of paper and represents the review of past work on spectrophotometric technique coupled to a continuous flow system to determine low concentrations of several chemical species in different kinds of pharmaceutical and biological samples. A short historical background of the flow-injection analysis technique and a brief discussion of the basic principles and potential are presented. Part of this chapter is devoted to describing the sample preparation techniques, principles, and figures of merit of analytical methods. Representative applications of flow-injection spectrophotometry to pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis are also described

Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies from Scaling Seeds: Global Defect Models
We investigate the global texture model of structure formation in cosmogonies
with non-zero cosmological constant for different values of the Hubble
parameter. We find that the absence of significant acoustic peaks and little
power on large scales are robust predictions of these models. However, from a
careful comparison with data we conclude that at present we cannot safely
reject the model on the grounds of present CMB data. Exclusion by means of
galaxy correlation data requires assumptions on biasing and statistics. New,
very stringent constraints come from peculiar velocities.
Investigating the large-N limit, we argue that our main conclusions apply to
all global O(N) models of structure formation.Comment: LaTeX file with RevTex, 27 pages, 23 eps figs., submitted to Phys.

(Twisted) Toroidal Compactification of pp-Waves
The maximally supersymmetric type IIB pp-wave is compactified on spatial
circles, with and without an auxiliary rotational twist. All spatial circles of
constant radius are identified. Without the twist, an S compactification
can preserve 24, 20 or 16 supercharges. compactifications can preserve
20, 18 or 16 supercharges; compactifications can preserve 18 or 16
supercharges and higher compactifications preserve 16 supercharges. The
worldsheet theory of this background is discussed. The T-dual and
decompactified type IIA and M-theoretic solutions which preserve 24
supercharges are given. Some comments are made regarding the AdS parent and the

Avaliação da dependência dos parâmetros de ajuste de um modelo E − l com a estratificação térmica estável
One of the main challenges of the atmospheric model is the proper determination of the turbulent diffusivity. In this sense, variousboundary layer parametrization have been developed along of the years. For the same closure order, many times, the bigger differences between them, are concentrated in the adjustment parameters. From the adequate physical description, to find the real value of each constant is the great challenge of the models. Them, the present work compare three different parametrization for the non-dimensional relation u2 ∗=E, that is used as a constant in the momentum diffusion coefficient in the E - l models. In the comparison with the GABLS experiment, the results show that the constant does not have a great influence over the windcomponents and over the temperature. On the other hand, the constant have a fundamental role in the behavior of the turbulence kinetic energy. This is due the fact of the constant is also present in the turbulence viscous dissipation term. Finally, it is important to stress that this is a work that is in its beginning and it aims the construction of a boundary layer parameterization for climate and weather forecasting models.
