A note on entropic force and brane cosmology
Recently Verlinde proposed that gravity is an entropic force caused by
information changes when a material body moves away from the holographic
screen. In this note we apply this argument to brane cosmology, and show that

Hidden symmetries for thermodynamics and emergence of relativity
Erik Verlinde recently proposed an idea about the thermodynamic origin of
gravity. Though this is a beautiful idea which may resolve many long standing
problems in the theories of gravity, it also raises many other problems. In
this article I will comment on some of the problems of Verlinde's proposal with
special emphasis on the thermodynamical origin of the principle of relativity.
It is found that there is a large group of hidden symmetries of thermodynamics
which contains the Poincare group of the spacetime for which space is emergent.

Floquet scattering in parametric electron pumps
A Floquet scattering approach to parametric electron pumps is presented and
compared with Brouwer's adiabatic scattering approach [Phys. Rev. B 58, R10135
(1998)] for a simple scattering model with two harmonically oscillating
delta-function barriers. For small strength of oscillating potentials these two
approaches give exactly equivalent results while for large strength, these
clearly deviate from each other. The validity of the adiabatic theory is also
discussed by using the Wigner delay time obtained from the Floquet scattering

On the Origin of Entropic Gravity and Inertia
It was recently suggested that quantum field theory is not fundamental but
emerges from the loss of phase space information about matter crossing causal
horizons. Possible connections between this formalism and Verlinde's entropic
gravity and Jacobson's thermodynamic gravity are proposed.
The holographic screen in Verlinde's formalism can be identified as local
Rindler horizons and its entropy as that of the bulk fields beyond the
horizons.
This naturally resolves some issues on entropic gravity.
The quantum fluctuation of the fields is the origin of the thermodynamic
nature of entropic gravity.
It is also suggested that inertia is related to dragging

Dissipation and noise in adiabatic quantum pumps
We investigate the distribution function, the heat flow and the noise
properties of an adiabatic quantum pump for an arbitrary relation of pump
frequency and temperature. To achieve this we start with the
scattering matrix approach for ac-transport. This approach leads to expressions
for the quantities of interest in terms of the side bands of particles exiting
the pump. The side bands correspond to particles which have gained or lost a
modulation quantum . We find that our results for the pump
current, the heat flow and the noise can all be expressed in terms of a
parametric emissivity matrix. In particular we find that the current
cross-correlations of a multiterminal pump are directly related a to a
non-diagonal element of the parametric emissivity matrix. The approach allows a
description of the quantum statistical correlation properties (noise) of an
adiabatic quantum pump
Entropic Corrections to Coulomb's Law
Two well-known quantum corrections to the area law have been introduced in
the literatures, namely, logarithmic and power-law corrections. Logarithmic
corrections, arises from loop quantum gravity due to thermal equilibrium
fluctuations and quantum fluctuations, while, power-law correction appears in
dealing with the entanglement of quantum fields in and out the horizon.
Inspired by Verlinde's argument on the entropic force, and assuming the quantum
corrected relation for the entropy, we propose the entropic origin for the
Coulomb's law in this note. Also we investigate the Uehling potential as a
radiative correction to Coulomb potential in 1-loop order and show that for
some value of distance the entropic corrections of the Coulomb's law is
compatible with the vacuum-polarization correction in QED. So, we derive
modified Coulomb's law as well as the entropy corrected Poisson's equation
which governing the evolution of the scalar potential . Our study further
supports the unification of gravity and electromagnetic interactions based on

Adiabatic quantum pump in the presence of external ac voltages
We investigate a quantum pump which in addition to its dynamic pump
parameters is subject to oscillating external potentials applied to the
contacts of the sample. Of interest is the rectification of the ac currents
flowing through the mesoscopic scatterer and their interplay with the quantum
pump effect. We calculate the adiabatic dc current arising under the
simultaneous action of both the quantum pump effect and classical
rectification. In addition to two known terms we find a third novel
contribution which arises from the interference of the ac currents generated by
the external potentials and the ac currents generated by the pump. The
interference contribution renormalizes both the quantum pump effect and the ac
rectification effect. Analysis of this interference effect requires a
calculation of the Floquet scattering matrix beyond the adiabatic approximation
based on the frozen scattering matrix alone. The results permit us to find the
instantaneous current. In addition to the current generated by the oscillating
potentials, and the ac current due to the variation of the charge of the frozen
scatterer, there is a third contribution which represents the ac currents
generated by an oscillating scatterer. We argue that the resulting pump effect
can be viewed as a quantum rectification of the instantaneous ac currents
generated by the oscillating scatterer. These instantaneous currents are an
intrinsic property of a nonstationary scattering process.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur

Expression of xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase (XTH) genes and XET activity in ethylene treated apple and tomato fruits
[EN] Xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase (XTHs: EC 2.4.1.207 and/or EC 3.2.1.151), a xyloglucan modifying enzyme, has been proposed to have a role during tomato and apple fruit ripening by loosening the cell wall. Since the ripening of climacteric fruits is controlled by endogenous ethylene biosynthesis, we wanted to study whether XET activity was ethylene-regulated, and if so, which specific genes encoding ripening-regulated XTH genes were indeed ethylene-regulated. XET specific activity in tomato and apple fruits was significantly increased by the ethylene treatment, as compared with the control fruits, suggesting an increase in the XTH gene expression induced by ethylene. The 25 SlXTH protein sequences of tomato and the 11 sequences MdXTH of apple were phylogenetically analyzed and grouped into three major clades. The SlXTHs genes with highest expression during ripening were SlXTHS and SlXTHS from Group III-B, and in apple MdXTH2, from Group II, and MdXTH10, and MdXTH11 from Group III-B. Ethylene was involved in the regulation of the expression of different SlXTH and MdXTH genes during ripening. In tomato fruit fifteen different SlXTH genes showed an increase in expression after ethylene treatment, and the SlXTHs that were ripening associated were also ethylene dependent, and belong to Group III-B (SlXTHS and SlXTHS). In apple fruit, three MdXTH showed an increase in expression after the ethylene treatment and the only MdXTH that was ripening associated and ethylene dependent was MdXTH10 from Group III-B. The results indicate that XTH may play an important role in fruit ripening and a possible relationship between XTHs from Group III-B and fruit ripening, and ethylene regulation is suggested. Measurement of Bottom versus Charm as a Function of Transverse Momentum with Electron-Hadron Correlations in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
The momentum distribution of electrons from semi-leptonic decays of charm and
bottom for mid-rapidity |y|<0.35 in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV is
measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)
over the transverse momentum range 2 < p_T < 7 GeV/c. The ratio of the yield of
electrons from bottom to that from charm is presented. The ratio is determined
using partial D/D^bar --> e^{+/-} K^{-/+} X (K unidentified) reconstruction. It
is found that the yield of electrons from bottom becomes significant above 4
GeV/c in p_T. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log (FONLL) perturbative
quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation agrees with the data within the
theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The extracted total bottom
production cross section at this energy is \sigma_{b\b^bar}= 3.2
^{+1.2}_{-1.1}(stat) ^{+1.4}_{-1.3}(syst) micro b.Comment: 432 authors, 6 pages text, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.
