    Get PDF

Lifetimes of Confined Acoustic Phonons in Ultra-Thin Silicon Membranes

    Get PDF
We study the relaxation of coherent acoustic phonon modes with frequencies up to 500 GHz in ultra-thin free-standing silicon membranes. Using an ultrafast pump-probe technique of asynchronous optical sampling, we observe that the decay time of the first-order dilatational mode decreases significantly from \sim 4.7 ns to 5 ps with decreasing membrane thickness from \sim 194 to 8 nm. The experimental results are compared with theories considering both intrinsic phonon-phonon interactions and extrinsic surface roughness scattering including a wavelength-dependent specularity. Our results provide insight to understand some of the limits of nanomechanical resonators and thermal transport in nanostructures

School integration of mentall y deficient children: a historical study and some present-da y questions

    Get PDF
The authors, first of all, present a history of school integration of mental deficient children in France. Secondly, they discuss some contemporary problems on school integration. They conclude that the progress in this domain will be possible only if it is accompanied by a therapeutic situation based on transfer.

Candida Arteritis in Patients Who Have Not Received Organ Transplants: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Fungal arteritis is a rare entity, associated with significant morbidity and mortality, that typically involves graft arteries in solid organ transplant recipients. Here, we report the first case of Candida carotid arteritis and review 22 other cases of Candida arteritis reported since 1966 in patients who have not received transplants. Most patients had serious underlying conditions. All cases were anatomically characterized by pseudoaneurysm formation. Patients presented with fever (n=17), local pain (n=13), and an expanding pulsatile mass (n=4), with subsequent rupture and hemorrhage (n=7). Evidence of Candida colonization or infection was present in 15 patients before arteritis occurred. Treatment typically included a combined surgical and antifungal approach. The outcome was favorable in 11 patients, but follow-up was limited. A high index of suspicion, early diagnosis, and prompt antifungal and surgical treatment seem crucial to efforts to avoid life-threatening arterial rupture and hemorrhag

Effects of spatial dispersion in near-field radiative heat transfer between two parallel metallic surfaces

We study the heat transfer between two parallel metallic semi-infinite media with a gap in the nanometer-scale range. We show that the near-field radiative heat flux saturates at distances smaller than the metal skin depth when using a local dielectric constant and investigate the origin of this effect. The effect of non-local corrections is analysed using the Lindhard-Mermin and Boltzmann-Mermin models. We find that local and non-local models yield the same heat fluxes for gaps larger than 2 nm. Finally, we explain the saturation observed in a recent experiment as a manifestation of the skin depth and show that heat is mainly dissipated by eddy currents in metallic bodies.Comment: Version without figures (8 figures in the complete version

The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to determine whether the socio-demographic factors of age, level of education and marital status have the same impact on obesity in women and in men aged 60 years and above; (2) to evaluate the associations between obesity on the one hand and self-rated health, physical incapacities and self-esteem on the other; (3) to test the mediatory potential of cardio-vascular diseases and diabetes on the relationship between obesity and self-rated health. For this, 400 persons aged from 60 to 92 years, living in Marseille, were questioned. These individual encounters included anthropometric measurement, and an interview carried out with the aid of a questionnaire (average duration: 1h30). The prevalence of obesity in our population sample is 17%, a rate comparable to the whole of this age group in the French population. Our analyses show that the correlates of obesity are very different between older women and men. For the men, only marital status is significantly associated with obesity while for the women, age, education level, self-rated health and physical incapacities are associated with obesity. Finally we have shown that the relation between obesity and self-rated health (for the women) is an indirect association affected by cardio-vascular diseases

SPI observations of positron annihilation radiation from the 4th galactic quadrant: sky distribution

During its first year in orbit the INTEGRAL observatory performed deep exposures of the Galactic Center region and scanning observations of the Galactic plane. We report on the status of our analysis of the positron annihilation radiation from the 4th Galactic quadrant with the spectrometer SPI, focusing on the sky distribution of the 511 keV line emission. The analysis methods are described; current constraints and limits on the Galactic bulge emission and the bulge-to-disk ratio are presented.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 5th INTEGRAL worksho
