Polarimetric Standard Stars Observed with FORS1 at ESO-VLT
A Paranal Observatory project aims to analyze all the polarimetric standard stars in use at FORS1 to both check they have a constant polarization signal and measure the instrumental polarization. Preliminary results for 3 standards in the FORS1 calibration plans are presented
Crystalline Silicate Feature of the Vega-like star HD145263
We have observed the 8-13 m spectrum (R250) of the Vega-like star
candidate HD145263 using Subaru/COMICS. The spectrum of HD145263 shows the
broad trapezoidal silicate feature with the shoulders at 9.3 m and 11.44
m, indicating the presence of crystalline silicate grains. This detection
implies that crystalline silicate may also be commonly present around Vega-like
stars. The 11.44 m feature is slightly shifted to a longer wavelength
compared to the usual 11.2-3 m crystalline forsterite feature detected
toward Herbig Ae/Be stars and T Tauri stars. Although the peak shift due to the
effects of the grain size can not be ruled out, we suggest that Fe-bearing
crystalline olivine explains the observed peak wavelength fairly well.
Fe-bearing silicates are commonly found in meteorites and most interplanetary
dust particles, which originate from planetesimal-like asteroids. According to
studies of meteorites, Fe-bearing silicate must have been formed in asteroidal
planetesimals, supporting the scenario that dust grains around Vega-like stars
are of planetesimal origin, if the observed 11.44 m peak is due to

Ectopic cardiovascular fat in middle-aged men: effects of race/ethnicity, overall and central adiposity. The ERA JUMP study.
Background/objectivesHigher volumes of ectopic cardiovascular fat (ECF) are associated with greater risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Identifying factors that are associated with ECF volumes may lead to new preventive efforts to reduce risk of CHD. Significant racial/ethnic differences exist for overall and central adiposity measures, which are known to be associated with ECF volumes. Whether racial/ethnic differences also exist for ECF volumes and their associations with these adiposity measures remain unclear.Subjects/methodsBody mass index (BMI), computerized tomography-measured ECF volumes (epicardial, pericardial and their summation) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were examined in a community-based sample of 1199 middle-aged men (24.2% Caucasians, 7.0% African-Americans, 23.6% Japanese-Americans, 22.0% Japanese, 23.2% Koreans).ResultsSignificant racial/ethnic differences existed in ECF volumes and their relationships with BMI and VAT. ECF volumes were the highest among Japanese-Americans and the lowest among African-Americans. The associations of BMI and VAT with ECF differed by racial/ethnic groups. Compared with Caucasians, for each 1-unit increase in BMI, African-Americans had lower, whereas Koreans had higher increases in ECF volumes (P-values<0.05 for both). Meanwhile, compared with Caucasians, for each 1-unit increase in log-transformed VAT, African-Americans, Japanese-Americans and Japanese had similar increases, whereas Koreans had a lower increase in ECF volumes (P-value<0.05).ConclusionsRacial/ethnic groups differed in their propensity to accumulate ECF at increasing level of overall and central adiposity. Future studies should evaluate whether reducing central adiposity or overall weight will decrease ECF volumes more in certain racial/ethnic groups. Evaluating these questions might help in designing race-specific prevention strategy of CHD risk associated with higher ECF
Molecular line mapping of the giant molecular cloud associated with RCW 106 - III. Multi-molecular line mapping
We present multi-molecular line maps obtained with the Mopra Telescope
towards the southern giant molecular cloud (GMC) complex G333, associated with
the HII region RCW 106. We have characterised the GMC by decomposing the 3D
data cubes with GAUSSCLUMPS, and investigated spatial correlations among
different molecules with principal component analysis (PCA). We find no
correlation between clump size and line width, but a strong correlation between
emission luminosity and line width. PCA classifies molecules into high and low
density tracers, and reveals that HCO+ and N2H+ are anti-correlated.Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures accepted by MNRA
Ex Situ Machine Perfusion of Human Donor Livers via the Surgically Reopened Umbilical Vein:A Proof of Concept
Background. Machine perfusion of donor livers is typically performed via the portal vein main stem. Instead, cannulation of a reopened umbilical vein could allow machine perfusion during organ procurement and subsequent implantation in the recipient without interruption of the portal venous circulation. We aimed to assess the feasibility of portal venous machine perfusion via the umbilical vein. Methods. During back table inspection of 5 human livers declined for transplantation, the umbilical vein was surgically reopened, dilated, and cannulated. Hypothermic and normothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (NMP) were performed using the umbilical vein for portal inflow. Three livers were perfused with hypothermic machine perfusion, 1 full liver graft underwent NMP for 4 hours, and 1 left lateral split procedure was performed under continuous NMP with portal perfusion via the umbilical vein. Results. In all livers, access to the portal venous system via the umbilical vein was successfully achieved with good portal flows and macroscopically homogeneous perfusion. The full liver graft that underwent NMP via the umbilical vein for 4 hours showed good lactate clearance, normalized pH, and achieved good bile production with pH >7.55. During the split procedure under continuous NMP via the umbilical vein, the left lateral segment and extended right lobe remained equally perfused, as demonstrated by Doppler ultrasound. Conclusions. Machine perfusion with portal perfusion via the umbilical vein is feasible. Portal venous flows were similar to those obtained after cannulation of the portal vein main stem. This technique enables continuous oxygenated perfusion of liver grafts during procurement, splitting, and implantation
The star-forming content of the W3 giant molecular cloud
We have surveyed a ~0.9-square-degree area of the W3 giant molecular cloud
and star-forming region in the 850-micron continuum, using the SCUBA bolometer
array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. A complete sample of 316 dense
clumps was detected with a mass range from around 13 to 2500 Msun. Part of the
W3 GMC is subject to an interaction with the HII region and fast stellar winds
generated by the nearby W4 OB association. We find that the fraction of total
gas mass in dense, 850-micron traced structures is significantly altered by
this interaction, being around 5% to 13% in the undisturbed cloud but ~25 - 37%
in the feedback-affected region. The mass distribution in the detected clump
sample depends somewhat on assumptions of dust temperature and is not a simple,
single power law but contains significant structure at intermediate masses.
This structure is likely to be due to crowding of sources near or below the
spatial resolution of the observations. There is little evidence of any
difference between the index of the high-mass end of the clump mass function in
the compressed region and in the unaffected cloud. The consequences of these
results are discussed in terms of current models of triggered star formation.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table (full source table available on

Metformin Preconditioning Improves Hepatobiliary Function and Reduces Injury in a Rat Model of Normothermic Machine Perfusion and Orthotopic Transplantation
Background. Preconditioning of donor livers before organ retrieval may improve organ quality after transplantation. We investigated whether preconditioning with metformin reduces preservation injury and improves hepatobiliary function in rat donor livers during ex situ normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) and after orthotopic liver transplantation. Methods. Lewis rats were administered metformin via oral gavage, after which a donor hepatectomy was performed followed by a standardized cold storage period of 4 hours. Graft assessment was performed using NMP via double perfusion of the hepatic artery and portal vein. In an additional experiment, rat donor livers preconditioned with metformin were stored on ice for 4 hours and transplanted to confirm postoperative liver function and survival. Data were analyzed and compared with sham-fed controls. Results. Graft assessment using NMP confirmed that preconditioning significantly improved ATP production, markers for hepatobiliary function (total bile production, biliary bilirubin, and bicarbonate), and significantly lowered levels of lactate, glucose, and apoptosis. After orthotopic liver transplantation, metformin preconditioning significantly reduced transaminase levels. Conclusions. Preconditioning with metformin lowers hepatobiliary injury and improves hepatobiliary function in an in situ and ex situ model of rat donor liver transplantation
Probing the envelopes of massive young stellar objects with diffraction limited mid-infrared imaging
Massive stars form whilst they are still embedded in dense envelopes. As a
result, the roles of rotation, mass loss and accretion in massive star
formation are not well understood. This study evaluates the source of the
Q-band, lambda=19.5 microns, emission of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs).
This allows us to determine the relative importance of rotation and outflow
activity in shaping the circumstellar environments of MYSOs on 1000 AU scales.
We obtained diffraction limited mid-infrared images of a sample of 20 MYSOs
using the VLT/VISIR and Subaru/COMICS instruments. For these 8 m class
telescopes and the sample selected, the diffraction limit, ~0.6", corresponds
to approximately 1000 AU. We compare the images and the spectral energy
distributions (SEDs) observed to a 2D, axis-symmetric dust radiative transfer
model that reproduces VLTI/MIDI observations of the MYSO W33A. We vary the
inclination, mass infall rate, and outflow opening angle to simultaneously
recreate the behaviour of the sample of MYSOs in the spatial and spectral
domains. The mid-IR emission of 70 percent of the MYSOs is spatially resolved.
In the majority of cases, the spatial extent of their emission and their SEDs
can be reproduced by the W33A model featuring an in-falling, rotating dusty
envelope with outflow cavities. There is independent evidence that most of the
sources which are not fit by the model are associated with ultracompact HII
regions and are thus more evolved. We find that, in general, the diverse 20
micron morphology of MYSOs can be attributed to warm dust in the walls of
outflow cavities seen at different inclinations. This implies that the warm
dust in the outflow cavity walls dominates the Q-band emission of MYSOs. In
turn, this emphasises that outflows are an ubiquitous feature of massive star

Unexpected Long-Term Variability in Jupiter's Tropospheric Temperatures
An essential component of planetary climatology is knowledge of the
tropospheric temperature field and its variability. Previous studies of Jupiter
hinted at periodic behavior that was non-seasonal, as well as dynamical
relationships between tropospheric and stratospheric temperatures. However,
these observations were made over time frames shorter than Jupiter's orbit or
they used sparse sampling. We derived upper-tropospheric (300-mbar)
temperatures over 40 years, extending those studies to cover several orbits of
Jupiter, revealing unexpected results. Periodicities of 4, 7 8-9 and 10-14
years were discovered that involved different latitude bands and seem
disconnected from seasonal changes in solar heating. Anti-correlations of
variability in opposite hemispheres were particularly striking at 16, 22 and 30
degrees from the equator. Equatorial temperature variations are also
anticorrelated with those 60-70 km above. Such behavior suggests a top-down
control of equatorial tropospheric temperatures from stratospheric dynamics.
Realistic future global climate models must address the origins of these
variations in preparation for their extension to a wider array of gas-giant
