    Structure and three-body decay of 9^9Be resonances

    The complex-rotated hyperspherical adiabatic method is used to study the decay of low-lying 9^9Be resonances into one neutron and two α\alpha-particles. We investigate the six resonances above the break-up threshold and below 6 MeV: 1/2±1/2^\pm, 3/2±3/2^\pm and 5/2±5/2^\pm. The short-distance properties of each resonance are studied, and the different angular momentum and parity configurations of the 8^8Be and 5^5He two-body substructures are determined. We compute the branching ratio for sequential decay via the 8^8Be ground state which qualitatively is consistent with measurements. We extract the momentum distributions after decay directly into the three-body continuum from the large-distance asymptotic structures. The kinematically complete results are presented as Dalitz plots as well as projections on given neutron and α\alpha-energy. The distributions are discussed and in most cases found to agree with available experimental data.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. To appear in Physical Review

    Three-body continuum problems are investigated for light nuclei of astrophysical relevance. We focus on three-body decays of resonances or recombination via resonances or the continuum background. The concepts of widths, decay mechanisms and dynamic evolution are discussed.     Direct and sequential radiative three-body reaction rates at low temperatures

    We investigate the low-temperature reaction rates for radiative capture processes of three particles. We compare direct and sequential capture mechanisms and rates using realistic phenomenological parametrizations of the corresponding photodissociation cross sections.Energy conservation prohibits sequential capture for energies smaller than that of the intermediate two-body structure. A finite width or a finite temperature allows this capture mechanism. We study generic effects of positions and widths of two- and three-body resonances for very low temperatures. We focus on nuclear reactions relevant for astrophysics, and we illustrate with realistic estimates for the α\alpha-α\alpha-α\alpha and α\alpha-α\alpha-nn radiative capture processes. The direct capture mechanism leads to reaction rates which for temperatures smaller than 0.1 GK can be several orders of magnitude larger than those of the NACRE compilation.Comment: To be published in European Physical Journal

    Discovery of a wide companion near the deuterium burning mass limit in the Upper Scorpius association

    We present the discovery of a companion near the deuterium burning mass limit located at a very wide distance, at an angular separation of 4.6+/-0.1 arcsec (projected distance of ~ 670 AU) from UScoCTIO108, a brown dwarf of the very young Upper Scorpius association. Optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy confirm the cool nature of both objects, with spectral types of M7 and M9.5, respectively, and that they are bona fide members of the association, showing low gravity and features of youth. Their masses, estimated from the comparison of their bolometric luminosities and theoretical models for the age range of the association, are 60+/-20 and 14^{+2}_{-8} MJup, respectively. The existence of this object around a brown dwarf at this wide orbit suggests that the companion is unlikely to have formed in a disk based on current planet formation models. Because this system is rather weakly bound, they did not probably form through dynamical ejection of stellar embryos.Comment: 10 pages, including 4 figures and 2 table

    We present the analysis of the variability of HD 170699, a COROT star showing the characteristics of a non evolutionary Delta Scuti star with high rotational velocity. There is a clear period of 10.45 c/d with 5.29 mmag amplitude in the y filter.     The multimode pulsation of the delta Scuti star V784 Cassiopeae

    We present an analysis of new Johnson and Stromgren photometric and medium-resolution spectroscopic observations of the delta Scuti type variable star V784 Cassiopeae. The data were obtained in three consecutive years between 1999 and 2001. The period analysis of the light curve resulted in the detection of four frequencies ranging from 9.15 c/d to 15.90 c/d, while there is a suggestion for more, unresolved frequency components, too. The mean Stromgren indices and Hipparcos parallax were combined to calculate the following physical parameters: =7100+-100 K, log g=3.8+-0.1, M_bol=1.50+-0.15 mag. The position of the star in the HR diagram was used to derive evolutionary mass and age yielding to a consistent picture of an evolved delta Scuti star with a mixture of radial plus non-radial modes.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&
