L’invention du lecteur au coeur de la construction auctoriale contemporaine

C’est un lieu commun pour l’écrivain interrogé sur sa pratique d’écriture que d’afficher un déni de lecteur que contredit à d’autres endroits de son discours un désir de lecteur indissociable de l’horizon du livre à écrire. Tel est bien le paradoxe de l’écrivain que l’on entend ici interroger. D’abord, à partir d’une enquête par entretiens menée auprès d’une soixantaine d’écrivains contemporains, pour explorer la place et le rôle de ce lecteur pluriel autant qu’imaginaire et fantasmé dans la construction auctoriale. Ensuite, en étudiant cette invention du lecteur dans la production littéraire actuelle en prenant pour exemple l’oeuvre de Jean Rouaud. La place qu’il accorde dans ses textes à l’adresse au lecteur tout comme au pacte de connivence qui la fonde, peut être lue en effet comme une tentative parmi d’autres pour faire du lecteur une instance du texte à part entière, une fiction de lecteur ami et complice où lire cette communauté rêvée par l’auteur. Entre soupçon et invention, c’est tout le dispositif d’un texte visant à écrire sur soi en sollicitant l’autre qui est dès lors revisité, par l’entremise du destinataire ambigu — ce Janus bifrons et double spéculaire que s’invente l’auteur.While they generally pretend to ignore readers when questioned on their approach to writing, authors cannot hide their desire to cater to said readers when planning their books, a paradox analysed in this article. Firstly, investigative interviews with some sixty contemporary authors will look at the role and scope of these real or anticipated readers as imagined by the writers. Secondly, using Jean Rouaud’s oeuvre as an example, we shall ponder how modern literature fashions readers. Rouaud’s usual notes to the reader and the tacit complicity behind them can both be interpreted as one possible ploy to tie the reader into the text, to create a fictitious friendly accomplice who is part of a community yearned for by the author. From suspicion to invention, this mechanism revisits the technique of writing about oneself through an uncertain someone else, a two-headed mirror image straight out of the author’s imagination

Second order statistical behavior of LLL and BKZ

The LLL algorithm (from Lenstra, Lenstra and Lovász) and its generalization BKZ (from Schnorr and Euchner) are widely used in cryptanalysis, especially for lattice-based cryptography. Precisely understanding their behavior is crucial for deriving appropriate key-size for cryptographic schemes subject to lattice-reduction attacks. Current models, e.g. the Geometric Series Assumption and Chen-Nguyen’s BKZ-simulator, have provided a decent first-order analysis of the behavior of LLL and BKZ. However, they only focused on the average behavior and were not perfectly accurate. In this work, we initiate a second order analysis of this behavior. We confirm and quantify discrepancies between models and experiments —in particular in the head and tail regions— and study their consequences. We also provide variations around the mean and correlations statistics, and study their impact. While mostly based on experiments, by pointing at and quantifying unaccounted phenomena, our study sets the ground for a theoretical and predictive understanding of LLL and BKZ performances at the second order

Sanitization of FHE ciphertexts

By definition, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) schemes support homomorphic decryption, and all known FHE constructions are bootstrapped from a Somewhat Homomorphic Encryption (SHE) scheme via this technique. Additionally, when a public key is provided, ciphertexts are also re-randomizable, e.g., by adding to them fresh encryptions of 0. From those two operations we devise an algorithm to sanitize a ciphertext, by making its distribution canonical. In particular, the distribution of the ciphertext does not depend on the circuit that led to it via homomorphic evaluation, thus providing circuit privacy in the honest-but-curious model. Unlike the previous approach based on noise flooding, our approach does not degrade much the security/efficiency trade-off of the underlying FHE. The technique can be applied to all lattice-based FHE proposed so far, without substantially affecting their concrete parameters

Bicycle helmet ventilation and comfort angle dependence

Five modern bicycle helmets were studied to elucidate some of the variations in ventilation performance, using both a heated manikin headform and human subjects (n=7). Wind speed and head angle were varied to test their influence on the measured steady-state heat exchange (cooling power) in the skull section of the headform. The cooling power transmitted by the helmets varied from about 60% to over 90% of that of the nude headform, illustrating the range of present manufacturer designs. Angling the head forward by 30° was found to provide better cooling power to the skull (up to 25%) for three of the helmets and almost equal cooling power in the remaining two cases. Comparisons of skull ventilation at these angles with human subjects strongly supported the headform result
