Inferring Multiple Graphical Structures
Gaussian Graphical Models provide a convenient framework for representing
dependencies between variables. Recently, this tool has received a high
interest for the discovery of biological networks. The literature focuses on
the case where a single network is inferred from a set of measurements, but, as
wetlab data is typically scarce, several assays, where the experimental
conditions affect interactions, are usually merged to infer a single network.
In this paper, we propose two approaches for estimating multiple related
graphs, by rendering the closeness assumption into an empirical prior or group
penalties. We provide quantitative results demonstrating the benefits of the
proposed approaches. The methods presented in this paper are embeded in the R
package 'simone' from version 1.0-0 and later
Superfluid toroidal currents in atomic condensates
The dynamics of toroidal condensates in the presence of condensate flow and
dipole perturbation have been investigated. The Bogoliubov spectrum of
condensate is calculated for an oblate torus using a discrete-variable
representation and a spectral method to high accuracy. The transition from
spheroidal to toroidal geometry of the trap displaces the energy levels into
narrow bands. The lowest-order acoustic modes are quantized with the dispersion
relation with . A condensate
with toroidal current splits the co-rotating and
counter-rotating pair by the amount: . Radial dipole excitations are the lowest energy dissipation modes.
For highly occupied condensates the nonlinearity creates an asymmetric mix of
dipole circulation and nonlinear shifts in the spectrum of excitations so that
the center of mass circulates around the axis of symmetry of the trap. We
outline an experimental method to study these excitations.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Spectral method for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic trap
We study the numerical resolution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii
equation, a non-linear Schroedinger equation used to simulate the dynamics of
Bose-Einstein condensates. Considering condensates trapped in harmonic
potentials, we present an efficient algorithm by making use of a spectral
Galerkin method, using a basis set of harmonic oscillator functions, and the
Gauss-Hermite quadrature. We apply this algorithm to the simulation of
condensate breathing and scissors modes.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure
Role of quantum statistics in the photoassociation of Bose-Einstein condensates
We show that the photoassociation of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate to form condensed molecules is a chemical process which not only does not obey the Arrhenius rules for chemical reactions, but that it can also depend on the quantum statistics of the reactants. Comparing the predictions of a truncated Wigner representation for different initial quantum states, we find that, even when the quantum prediction for an initial coherent state is close to the Gross-Pitaevskii prediction, other quantum states may result in very different dynamics
Non-minimal Maxwell-Modified Gauss-Bonnet Cosmologies: Inflation and Dark Energy
In this paper we show that power-law inflation can be realized in non-minimal
gravitational coupling of electromagnetic field with a general function of
Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Such a non-minimal coupling may appear due to quantum
corrections. We also consider modified Maxwell- gravity in which
non-minimal coupling between electromagnetic field and occur in the
framework of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity. It is shown that inflationary
cosmology and late-time accelerated expansion of the universe are possible in
such a theory.Comment: 10 pages, no figur
Gravity and Electromagnetism with -type Coupling and Magnetic Monopole Solutions
We investigate -type coupling of electromagnetic fields to
gravity. After we derive field equations by a first order variational principle
from the Lagrangian formulation of the non-minimally coupled theory, we look
for static, spherically symmetric, magnetic monopole solutions. We point out
that the solutions can provide possible geometries which may explain the
flatness of the observed rotation curves of galaxies.Comment: 10 page
Non-minimal Couplings of Electromagnetic Fields to Gravity: Static, Spherically Symmetric Solutions
We investigate the non-minimal couplings between the electromagnetic fields
and gravity through the natural logarithm of the curvature scalar. After we
give the Lagrangian formulation of the non-minimally coupled theory, we derive
field equations by a first order variational principle using the method of
Lagrange multipliers. We look at static, spherically symmetric solutions that
are asymptotically flat. We discuss the nature of horizons for some candidate
black hole solutions according to various values of the parameters and

Dermatophylosis in Santa Inês sheep from Distrito Federal
Four cases of dermatophylosis were reported in Santa Inês sheep in a study period of one year. Microscopically, septate filaments and coccoid forms zoospores were observed. Attempts to isolate the microorganisms were accomplished using Haastra's method and it was successful in only one case. Dermatophilus congolensis samples have grown on blood agar, colonies where hemolytic, small, round and pigmentation vary from yellow to orange. The gram staining method was efficient to confirm the presence of the microorganism affecting the epidermis due to typical morphology of the agent
Quantum superchemistry: Role of trapping profile and quantum statistics
The process of Raman photoassociation of a trapped atomic condensate to form condensed molecules has been labeled superchemistry because it can occur at 0 K and experiences coherent bosonic stimulation. We show here that the differences from ordinary chemical processes go even deeper, with the conversion rates depending on the quantum state of the reactants, as expressed by the Wigner function. We consider different initial quantum states of the trapped atomic condensate and different forms of the confining potentials, demonstrating the importance of the quantum statistics and the extra degrees of freedom which massive particles and trapping potentials make available over the analogous optical process of second-harmonic generation. We show that both mean-field analyses and quantum calculations using an inappropriate initial condition can make inaccurate predictions for a given system. This is possible whether using a spatially dependent analysis or a zero-dimensional approach as commonly used in quantum optics
Bartonella Clarridgeiae Bacteremia Detected In An Asymptomatic Blood Donor
Human exposure to Bartonella clarridgeiae has been reported only on the basis of antibody detection. We report for the first time an asymptomatic human blood donor infected with B. clarridgeiae, as documented by enrichment blood culture, PCR, and DNA sequencing.531352356Maggi, R.G., Duncan, A.W., Breitschwerdt, E.B., Novel chemically modified liquid medium that will support the growth of seven Bartonella species (2005) J Clin Microbiol, 43, pp. 2651-2655. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/JCM.43.6.2651-2655.2005Drummond, M.R., Pitassi, L.H., Lania, B.G., Dos Santos, S.R., Gilioli, R., Velho, P.E., Detection of Bartonella henselae in defibrinated sheep blood used for culture media supplementation (2011) Braz J Microbiol, 42, pp. 430-432. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S1517-83822011000200003Altschul, S.F., Gish, W., Miller, W., Myers, E.W., Lipman, D.J., Basic local alignment search tool (1990) J Mol Biol, 215, pp. 403-410Dalton, M.J., Robinson, L.E., Cooper, J., Regnery, R.L., Olson, J.G., Childs, J.E., Use of Bartonella antigens for serologic diagnosis of cat-scratch disease at a national referral center (1995) Arch Intern Med, 155, pp. 1670-1676Breitschwerdt, E.B., Maggi, R.G., Chomel, B.B., Lappin, M.R., Bartonellosis: An emerging infectious disease of zoonotic importance to animals and human beings (2010) J Vet Emerg Crit Care (San Antonio), 20, pp. 8-30. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1476-4431.2009.00496.xChamberlin, J., Laughlin, L.W., Romero, S., Solorzano, N., Gordon, S., Andre, R.G., Pachas, P., Watts, D., Epidemiology of endemic Bartonella bacilliformis: A prospective cohort study in a Peruvian mountain valley community (2002) J Infect Dis, 186, pp. 983-990. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1086/344054Maggi, R.G., Ericson, M., Mascarelli, P.E., Bradley, J.M., Breitschwerdt, E.B., Bartonella henselae bacteremia in a mother and son potentially associated with tick exposure (2013) Parasit Vectors, 6, p. 101. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1756-3305-6-101Scott, M.A., McCurley, T.L., Vnencak-Jones, C.L., Hager, C., McCoy, J.A., Anderson, B., Collins, R.D., Edwards, K.M., Cat scratch disease: Detection of Bartonella henselae DNA in archival biopsies from patients with clinically, serologically, and histologically defined disease (1996) Am J Pathol, 149, pp. 2161-2167Slater, L.N., Welch, D.F., Min, K.W., Rochalimaea henselae causes bacillary angiomatosis and peliosis hepatis (1992) Arch Intern Med, 152, pp. 602-606Sander, A., Zagrosek, A., Bredt, W., Schiltz, E., Piemont, Y., Lanz, C., Dehio, C., Characterization of Bartonella clarridgeiae flagellin (FlaA) and detection of antiflagellin antibodies in patients with lymphadenopathy (2000) J Clin Microbiol, 38, pp. 2943-2948Kordick, D.L., Hilyard, E.J., Hadfield, T.L., Wilson, K.H., Steigerwalt, A.G., Brenner, D.J., Breitschwerdt, E.B., Bartonella clarridgeiae, a newly recognized zoonotic pathogen causing inoculation papules, fever, and lymphadenopathy (cat scratch disease) (1997) J Clin Microbiol, 35, pp. 1813-1818Margileth, A.M., Baehren, D.F., Chest-wall abscess due to cat-scratch disease (CSD) in an adult with antibodies to Bartonella clarridgeiae: Case report and review of the thoracopulmonary manifestations of CSD (1998) Clin Infect Dis, 27, pp. 353-357. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1086/514671Chomel, B.B., Mac Donald, K.A., Kasten, R.W., Chang, C.C., Wey, A.C., Foley, J.E., Thomas, W.P., Kittleson, M.D., Aortic valve endocarditis in a dog due to Bartonella clarridgeiae (2001) J Clin Microbiol, 39, pp. 3548-3554. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/JCM.39.10.3548-3554.2001Gillespie, T.N., Washabau, R.J., Goldschmidt, M.H., Cullen, J.M., Rogala, A.R., Breitschwerdt, E.B., Detection of Bartonella henselae and Bartonella clarridgeiae DNA in hepatic specimens from two dogs with hepatic disease (2003) J Am Vet Med Assoc, 222, pp. 47-51. , http://dx.doi.org/10.2460/javma.2003.222.47, 35Robinson, M.T., Hillman, T., Langton, D.A., Shaw, S.E., Bartonella clarridgeiae in a cat in the UK (2009) Vet Rec, 164, pp. 58-59. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/vr.164.2.58Sykes, J.E., Westropp, J.L., Kasten, R.W., Chomel, B.B., Association between Bartonella species infection and disease in pet cats as determined using serology and culture (2010) J Feline Med Surg, 12, pp. 631-636. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jfms.2010.04.003Fouch, B., Coventry, S., A case of fatal disseminated Bartonella henselae infection (cat-scratch disease) with encephalitis (2007) Arch Pathol Lab Med, 131, pp. 1591-1594Boudebouch, N., Sarih, M., Beaucournu, J.C., Amarouch, H., Hassar, M., Raoult, D., Parola, P., Bartonella clarridgeiae, B.
