The diversity of planktonic organisms was studied for seven months in Lake Wapalanne and Lake Ocquittunk (Stokes State Forest), Sussex County, New Jersey. Relative abundance and species diversity were studied as well as water quality including parameters: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and depth of lakes. The data of seasonal changes in abundance of organisms and water quality was compared between both lakes. Three stations were set up along the straight line on Lake Wapalanne, buoyed by diatometers, which were used for diatom collection. There were also three stations located along the sides of Lake Ocquittunk arbitrary picked. Plankton samples from both lakes were collected using eighty micron plankton net which was dragged behind a row boat from one station to the next on Lake Wapalanne and collected from the sides of Lake Ocquittunk. Furthermore, water quality data were collected at each station of both lakes. The results of my study support previous findings where species composition varied throughout the seasons specially, the abundance of cladocerans, dinoflagelates and volvocines occurred during the first period of the study (June), and copepods increased in relative abundance later in the year (August and September). Representatives of Monera, Protista, Rotifera, Cladocera, Copepoda, Ostracoda, Amphipoda, Decopoda and Insecta were found in both lakes, however their species evenness and diversity varies interchangeably throughout. When taking into consideration higher taxon data, I demonstrate that the similarities of organisms in both lakes are very high; around seventy five percent with the 0.18 stress level suggesting that both sites are similar. Comparing water quality data, they are very alike in both sites

    Managing multicultural workforce

Meine Analyse basiert auf die professionellen Studien von Mintzbergs, Hofestede's 5 Abmessungen und Brett J. Behfar K und M. Kern Artikel:" Managing Multikulturellen Teams"The reasons for completing this thesis: "Managing a multicultural workforce" were two fold: firstly due to my personal interest in business studies which I have, together with the completion of my "International Business" Masters degree at Vienna University; and secondly my personal experience as I was able to work and study in Vienna, Austria, and more recently London, United Kingdom. This has allowed me to complete my research and analyse companies from two different countries, as well as producing case studies for each company researched, questioning and interviewing staff in every aspect of a multicultural workforce. Managing a Multicultural Workforce is seen in today's environment as a very ethical way to manage the many different cultures, which could be employed in the world today. Due to the rapidly changing and developing economic environment of the 21st century, means that cultures are always developing to ensure they are up to date, the most recent example being the mass movement of people around the European Union with the opening up of boarders over the last 10 years-changing policy, market needs and communication styles for ever, with people freely moving and communicating wherever and when required. My thesis examines how companies perceive culturally diverse teams, do problems arise, together with the steps for resolution, and whether the companies questioned believe that having a multicultural team benefits its long- term aspirations. My research and analysis compares the case studies, business markets, trends, and ways of managing multicultural workforces versus the findings of the professional research: Mintzbergs' Informational Roles, Hofestede's 5 dimensions and Brett J. Behfar K. and M.Kern "Managing Multicultural Teams" - a business review article published in the Harvard Business Review

    TecCOMFrame:Developing prototype technical communication curricula

    Get PDF
In Europe, the number of academic programs in technical communication is limited, and the academic profile of the field remains low as a result. The three-year TecCOMFrame project, designed to address the shortage of academic programs, began in October 2015. The project involves academic partners from eight European countries and is coordinated by Tekom Europe, the European Association for Technical Communication. The project deliverables include an academic competence framework and several prototype curricula developed from the competence framework. The process of developing the prototypes was iterative and collaborative. The purpose of the prototypes is to provide inspiration and guidance for academics planning to develop a technical communication program. The prototypes follow European norms as outlined by the Bologna process: Each curriculum corresponds to a level within the European Qualifications Framework, specifies European credits, and includes modules, subjects and learning goals. The prototypes include a three-semester master's program and a master's-level specialization in a language studies program.</p

Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric pathology: insights from in vivo and ex vivo models

    Get PDF
Gastric colonization with Helicobacter pylori induces diverse human pathological conditions, including superficial gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and gastric adenocarcinoma and its precursors. The treatment of these conditions often relies on the eradication of H. pylori, an intervention that is increasingly difficult to achieve and that does not prevent disease progression in some contexts. There is, therefore, a pressing need to develop new experimental models of H. pylori-associated gastric pathology to support novel drug development in this field. Here, we review the current status of in vivo and ex vivo models of gastric H. pylori colonization, and of Helicobacter-induced gastric pathology, focusing on models of gastric pathology induced by H. pylori, Helicobacter felis and Helicobacter suis in rodents and large animals. We also discuss the more recent development of gastric organoid cultures from murine and human gastric tissue, as well as from human pluripotent stem cells, and the outcomes of H. pylori infection in these systems

Specific and Sensitive Detection of H. pylori in Biological Specimens by Real-Time RT-PCR and In Situ Hybridization

PCR detection of H. pylori in biological specimens is rendered difficult by the extensive polymorphism of H. pylori genes and the suppressed expression of some genes in many strains. The goal of the present study was to (1) define a domain of the 16S rRNA sequence that is both highly conserved among H. pylori strains and also specific to the species, and (2) to develop and validate specific and sensitive molecular methods for the detection of H. pylori. We used a combination of in silico and molecular approaches to achieve sensitive and specific detection of H. pylori in biologic media. We sequenced two isolates from patients living in different continents and demonstrated that a 546-bp domain of the H. pylori 16S rRNA sequence was conserved in those strains and in published sequences. Within this conserved sequence, we defined a 229-bp domain that is 100% homologous in most H. pylori strains available in GenBank and also is specific for H. pylori. This sub-domain was then used to design (1) a set of high quality RT-PCR primers and probe that encompassed a 76-bp sequence and included at least two mismatches with other Helicobacter sp. 16S rRNA; and (2) in situ hybridization antisense probes. The sensitivity and specificity of the approaches were then demonstrated by using gastric biopsy specimens from patients and rhesus monkeys. This H. pylori-specific region of the 16S rRNA sequence is highly conserved among most H. pylori strains and allows specific detection, identification, and quantification of this bacterium in biological specimens
