    Training during the COVID-19 lockdown : knowledge, beliefs, and practices of 12,526 athletes from 142 countries and six continents

    OBJECTIVE Our objective was to explore the training-related knowledge, beliefs, and practices of athletes and the influence of lockdowns in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS Athletes (n = 12,526, comprising 13% world class, 21% international, 36% national, 24% state, and 6% recreational) completed an online survey that was available from 17 May to 5 July 2020 and explored their training behaviors (training knowledge, beliefs/attitudes, and practices), including specific questions on their training intensity, frequency, and session duration before and during lockdown (March–June 2020). RESULTS Overall, 85% of athletes wanted to “maintain training,” and 79% disagreed with the statement that it is “okay to not train during lockdown,” with a greater prevalence for both in higher-level athletes. In total, 60% of athletes considered “coaching by correspondence (remote coaching)” to be sufficient (highest amongst world-class athletes). During lockdown, < 40% were able to maintain sport-specific training (e.g., long endurance [39%], interval training [35%], weightlifting [33%], most (83%) training for “general fitness and health maintenance” during lockdown. Athletes trained alone (80%) and focused on bodyweight (65%) and cardiovascular (59%) exercise/training during lockdown. Compared with before lockdown, most athletes reported reduced training frequency (from between five and seven sessions per week to four or fewer), shorter training sessions (from ≄ 60 to < 60 min), and lower sport-specific intensity (~ 38% reduction), irrespective of athlete classification. CONCLUSIONS COVID-19-related lockdowns saw marked reductions in athletic training specificity, intensity, frequency, and duration, with notable within-sample differences (by athlete classification). Higher classification athletes had the strongest desire to “maintain” training and the greatest opposition to “not training” during lockdowns. These higher classification athletes retained training specificity to a greater degree than others, probably because of preferential access to limited training resources. More higher classification athletes considered “coaching by correspondence” as sufficient than did lower classification athletes. These lockdown-mediated changes in training were not conducive to maintenance or progression of athletes’ physical capacities and were also likely detrimental to athletes’ mental health. These data can be used by policy makers, athletes, and their multidisciplinary teams to modulate their practice, with a degree of individualization, in the current and continued pandemic-related scenario. Furthermore, the data may drive training-related educational resources for athletes and their multidisciplinary teams.     Cholesterol levels in patients with multiple myeloma

    WOS: 000252538900007PubMed ID: 17874102Hypocholesterolemia is seen in solid tumors and some hematological malignancies. We assessed cholesterol levels and the relationship between these levels and types and stages of multiple myeloma (MM) in the patients with MM. One-hundred two patients (60 male and 42 female) of mean age 59 +/- 11 years with MM were enrolled to this study. While 71.6% of the patients were Ig G type, 80.4% of the patients were at stage III. In the control group, there were 71 healthy persons (42 male and 29 female) of mean age 58 +/- 8 years. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the patients with MM were significantly lower than the controls (p0.05). Lipid parameters were not different between Ig types (p>0.05). The levels of TC and LDL-C in the patients with stage I were higher than those of stages II and III (p0.05). HDL-C levels in the patients with stage III were lower than controls (p<0.001). Hypocholesterolemia are seen in the patients with MM. Hypocholesterolemia may be due to increased LDL clearance and utilization of cholesterol by myeloma cells

    Participation Trends And Performance Analysis Of Turkey'S Long-Distance Runs Between 2007-2017

    Backgroung: Long-distance running events have gained more popularity worldwide over years. However, the number of participants to such events, age and sex distribution of participants may vary by country. Material and methods: We have investigated participation trends and performances of the finishers of three different courses (15km, half-marathon, marathon) in two of the biggest running events in Turkey (the Antalya and Istanbul marathons) between 2007-2017. Results: Our results have shown that runners who completed the 15km course were the highest and marathon finishers were the lowest in number each year. Among native runners, male participation in each distance and event is higher than female participation. Native female marathon finishers increased only by 0.23% in 6 years. In all distances, women run at a lower average speed than men each year. Between 2007-2017, the mean average speed of women were 9.10km/h (+/- 0.18), 9.71km/h (+/- 1.62) and 9.72km/h (+/- 1.73) and the mean average speed of men were 10.45km/h (+/- 2.02), 10.89km/h (+/- 1.83) and 10.40km/h (+/- 1.80) at 15km, 21km and 42km respectively. Conclusions: An important sex gap was observed in participation in long-distance runs in Turkey, which is more pronounced in marathons. Performance analysis showed that females' mean average speed is lower than males' in all distances.Wo

    Surgical Treatment of Achilles Tendon Ruptures: The Comparison of Open and Percutaneous Methods in a Rabbit Model

    BACKGROUND: This study was intended to investigate the healing properties of open and percutaneous techniques in a rabbit model and compare histological, electron microscopical, and biomechanical findings of the healed tendon between the groups. METHODS: Twenty-six rabbits were randomly assigned to two groups of thirteen rabbits each. Percutaneous tenotomy of the Achilles tendon (AT) was applied through a stab incision on the right side 1.5 cm above the calcaneal insertion in all animals. Using the same Bunnell suture, the first group was repaired with the open and the second group was repaired with the percutaneous method. ATs were harvested at the end of eight weeks for biomechanical and histological evaluation. RESULTS: When the sections were evaluated for fibrillar density under electron microscopy, it was noted that fibrils were more abundant in the percutaneous repair group. The tendon scores in the percutaneous group were less than the open group indicating closer histological morphology to normal. The difference was not significant (p=0.065). The mean force to rupture the tendon was 143.7 +/- 9.5 N in percutaneous group and 139.2 +/- 8.2 N in the open group. The difference was not significant (p=0.33). CONCLUSION: Percutaneous techniques provide as good clinical results as the open techniques do. The healing tendon shows better findings in histological and electron microscopical level with percutaneous technique.WoSScopu
