    Management of Glyphosate-Resistant Weeds in Mexican Citrus Groves: Chemical Alternatives and Economic Viability

    Glyphosate is a cheap herbicide that has been used to control a wide range of weeds (4–6 times/year) in citrus groves of the Gulf of Mexico; however, its excessive use has selected for glyphosate-resistant weeds. We evaluated the efficacy and economic viability of 13 herbicide treatments (glyphosate combined with PRE- and/or POST-emergence herbicides and other alternative treatments), applied in tank-mixture or sequence, to control glyphosate-resistant weeds in two Persian lime groves (referred to as SM-I and SM-II) of the municipality of Acateno, Puebla, during two years (2014 and 2015). The SM-I and SM-II fields had 243 and 346 weeds/m2, respectively, composed mainly of Bidens pilosa and Leptochloa virgata. Echinochloa colona was also frequent in SM-II. The glyphosate alone treatments (1080, 1440, or 1800 g ae ha−1) presented control levels of the total weed population ranging from 64% to 85% at 15, 30, and 45 d after treatment (DAT) in both fields. Mixtures of glyphosate with grass herbicides such as fluazifop-p-butyl, sethoxydim, and clethodim efficiently controlled E. colona and L. virgata, but favored the regrowth of B. pilosa. The sequential applications of glyphosate + (bromacil + diuron) and glufosinate + oxyfluorfen controlled more than 85% the total weed community for more than 75 days. However, these treatments were between 360% and 390% more expensive (1.79 and 1.89 /dayha1ofsatisfactoryweedcontrol,respectively),comparedtotherepresentativetreatment(glyphosate1080gaeha1=USD/day ha−1 of satisfactory weed control, respectively), compared to the representative treatment (glyphosate 1080 g ae ha−1 = USD 29.0 ha−1). In practical and economic terms, glufosinate alone was the best treatment controlling glyphosate resistant weeds maintaining control levels >80% for at least 60 DAT ($1.35/day ha−1). The rest of the treatments, applied in tank-mix or in sequence with glyphosate, had similar or lower control levels (~70%) than glyphosate at 1080 g ae ha−1. The adoption of glufosiante alone, glufosinate + oxyfluorfen or glyphosate + (bromacil + diuron) must consider the cost of satisfactory weed control per day, the period of weed control, as well as other factors associated with production costs to obtain an integrated weed management in the short and long term

    Low temperatures enhance the absorption and translocation of 14C-glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant Conyza sumatrensis

    Influence of low temperatures on the glyphosate efficacy was studied in glyphosate-resistant (R) and -susceptible (S) Conyza sumatrensis biotypes.For this purpose, the physiological and enzymatic aspects involved werecharacterized under two growing temperature regimes [high (30/20 oC) andlow 15/5oC temperatures day/night]. The R biotype was 5.5 times moreresistant than the S biotype at high temperatures; however, this R-to-S ratio decreased to 1.6 at low temperatures. At 96 h after treatment (HAT), theshikimic acid accumulation was higher in the S biotype in both temperatureregimes (4.6 and 1.9 more shikimic acid at high and low temperatures,respectively), but the accumulation of the R biotype increased 2.6 times at lowtemperatures compared to high ones. From 24 to 96 HAT, the 14C-glyphosateabsorption ranged from 28 to 65% (percentage reached from 48 HAT) at lowtemperatures and from 20 to 50% at high temperatures (gradual increase), butthere were no differences between C. sumatrensis biotypes within eachtemperature regime. At high temperatures, the 14C-glyphosate translocationwas different between biotypes, where the R one retained at least 10% moreherbicide in the treated leaves than the S biotype at 96 HAT. So, the S biotypetranslocated 40% of 14C-glyphosate absorbed to roots, and the R biotypetranslocated only 28% of herbicide at the same period. At low temperatures,there were no differences between biotypes, and at 96 HAT, the 14C-glyphosate found in treated leaves was ~47% and up to ~42% reached the roots, i.e., the resistance mechanism was suppressed. The basal and enzymaticactivities of the 5-enolpyruvyishikimate 3-phosphate synthase were differentbetween temperature regimes, but there was no differences between biotypeswithin each temperature regime, showing that target-site resistancemechanisms did not contribute in the glyphosate resistance of the R biotype.Low temperatures enhanced the absorption and translocation of glyphosate bysuppressing the resistance mechanisms improving its efficacy on resistantplants.     Pruning and fertilization in young Pinus greggii plantations established at Durango, Mexico

    Objective: To evaluate pruning and fertilization effects on growth of plantations of Pinus greggii established in Durango. Design/methodology/approach: In a plantation (Durango), pruning was applied at three intensities (0, 50 and 75%), under a randomized complete block design. Four years later the basal diameter (Db), normal diameter (DN), plant height (PH) and stem height (SH) were evaluated. In another plantation (La Soledad), two levels of pruning (0 and 50%) and foliar fertilization (with and without application) were applied under a factorial experiment in completely randomized design. Seven months later, Db, PH, and crown diameter (CD) were recorded. An analysis of variance and a means comparison test (Tukey, ? = 0.05) were performed. Results: In Durango, pruning diminished the Db and PH, but increased the SH (p ? 0.01). In La Soledad, pruning also affected the growth. The Db, PH, and CD were lowered when trees were pruned (p ? 0.01). Fertilization affected the PH (p ? 0.05) and the CD (p ? 0.01) as well. The PH and the CD for both pruned and unpruned trees were increased with fertilization. Limitations/implications: Pruning at intensities of 50 and 75% are not suitable for P. greggii because reduce their growth.     Rendimiento y valor nutricional de tres variedades de sorgo dulce cultivadas en cuatro ambientes de Durango

    El sorgo dulce muestra alto rendimiento de forraje para la alimentación de rumiantes. El objetivo fue evaluar el rendimiento y calidad forrajera de tres variedades de sorgo en Durango. En 2014, se evaluaron las variedades Lico, TOM 3 y Mercedes, en la Colonia Hidalgo (CH), Campo Experimental Valle del Guadiana (CEVAG), La Soledad (LS) y La Goma (LG). El diseño experimental fue completamente aleatorio con arreglo factorial y cinco repeticiones. Se evaluó forraje verde (FV), forraje seco (FS), proteína cruda (PC), digestibilidad verdadera in vitro (DIVMS), fibra detergente neutra (FDN), fibra detergente ácida (FDA), lignina (L), celulosa (Cel), hemicelulosa (HE), valor relativo (VRF) y calidad relativa del forraje (CRF). Se observaron diferencias significativas (P≤0.01 y 0.05) entre ambientes y variedades para FV, FS, L, VRF y CRF y entre ambientes para PC, FDN, FDA, CEL, HE y DIVMS. En CEVAG, se registró el mayor rendimiento de FV (75.9 t ha-1) y FS (12.4 t ha-1). El valor más alto de PC se obtuvo en LG (10 %); mientras que la DIVMS fue alta en LS (78.2 %) y más baja en LG (63.9 %). El contenido de L fue más alto en CH (6.3 %) y LG (6.2 %); mientras que, en LS fue de 3.4 %. Exceptuando LG, en todos los ambientes se obtuvo alta calidad forrajera (CRF= 106.7 a 135.0 %). El sorgo es una opción forrajera en Durango, aunque debe cuidarse la fecha de siembra y cosecha, control de insectos, riego y fertilización para incrementar el rendimiento y calidad nutricional

    (1) Aims: To assess the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Spain, to describe the main epidemiological and clinical characteristics at diagnosis and the evolution of the disease, and to explore the use of drug treatments. (2) Methods: Prospective, population-based nationwide registry. Adult patients diagnosed with IBD-Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD unclassified (IBD-U)-during 2017 in Spain were included and were followed-up for 1 year. (3) Results: We identified 3611 incident cases of IBD diagnosed during 2017 in 108 hospitals covering over 22 million inhabitants. The overall incidence (cases/100,000 person-years) was 16 for IBD, 7.5 for CD, 8 for UC, and 0.5 for IBD-U; 53% of patients were male and median age was 43 years (interquartile range = 31-56 years). During a median 12-month follow-up, 34% of patients were treated with systemic steroids, 25% with immunomodulators, 15% with biologics and 5.6% underwent surgery. The percentage of patients under these treatments was significantly higher in CD than UC and IBD-U. Use of systemic steroids and biologics was significantly higher in hospitals with high resources. In total, 28% of patients were hospitalized (35% CD and 22% UC patients, p < 0.01). (4) Conclusion: The incidence of IBD in Spain is rather high and similar to that reported in Northern Europe. IBD patients require substantial therapeutic resources, which are greater in CD and in hospitals with high resources, and much higher than previously reported. One third of patients are hospitalized in the first year after diagnosis and a relevant proportion undergo surgery

    First Results of the 140^{140}Ce(n,γ)141^{141}Ce Cross-Section Measurement at n_TOF

    An accurate measurement of the 140^{140}Ce(n,γ) energy-dependent cross-section was performed at the n_TOF facility at CERN. This cross-section is of great importance because it represents a bottleneck for the s-process nucleosynthesis and determines to a large extent the cerium abundance in stars. The measurement was motivated by the significant difference between the cerium abundance measured in globular clusters and the value predicted by theoretical stellar models. This discrepancy can be ascribed to an overestimation of the 140^{140}Ce capture cross-section due to a lack of accurate nuclear data. For this measurement, we used a sample of cerium oxide enriched in 140^{140}Ce to 99.4%. The experimental apparatus consisted of four deuterated benzene liquid scintillator detectors, which allowed us to overcome the difficulties present in the previous measurements, thanks to their very low neutron sensitivity. The accurate analysis of the p-wave resonances and the calculation of their average parameters are fundamental to improve the evaluation of the 140^{140}Ce Maxwellian-averaged cross-section
