The Role of Multinational Corporations in Metropolitan Innovation Systems – Empirical Evidence from Europe and South-East Asia

    Get PDF
Using firm-level survey data from Barcelona, Stockholm, Vienna in Europe and Singapore, Penang (Malaysia) and Bangkok in South-East Asia the paper enquires into the different R&D and innovation behaviour of multinational and local companies in these Metropolitan Regions. Scrutinizing a set of input, throughput and output indicators as well as information on cooperation characteristics, we try to evaluate a) if the spatial pattern of more (intense) innovation activity in Europe when compared to South-East Asia is still valid; and b) if there are reasons to believe that R&D units of multinational corporations in Europe are mainly concerned with the enhancement of the knowledge base and the development of future competitiveness by tapping into localized knowledge and using the particular host regions’ innovation systems, while, on the other hand, MNCs in South-East Asia use R&D to support existing production facilities in order to exploit an existing competitive advantage. We are able to show that there is still a major gap in the innovation performance between South-East Asia and Europe and that there are indeed indications that R&D units in Europe are more orientated towards the augmentation of the company’s knowledge base.

Coherent carrier dynamics in semiconductor superlattices

    Get PDF
We investigate the coherent dynamics of carriers in semiconductor superlattices driven by ac-dc electric fields. We solve numerically the time-dependent effective-mass equation for the envelope function. We find that carriers undergo Rabi oscillations when the driving frequency is close to the separation between minibands.Comment: REVTEX (6 pages) and 3 figures (PostScript). Aspectos médico-legales de la prevención del suicidio

    Get PDF

Atomic Interferometer with Amplitude Gratings of Light and its Applications to Atom Based Tests of the Equivalence Principle

We have developed a matter wave interferometer based on the diffraction of atoms from effective absorption gratings of light. In a setup with cold rubidium atoms in an atomic fountain the interferometer has been used to carry out tests of the equivalence principle on an atomic basis. The gravitational acceleration of the two isotopes 85Rb and 87Rb was compared, yielding a difference Dg/g =(1.2 +-1.7)x10^{-7}. We also perform a differential free fall measurement of atoms in two different hyperfine states, and obtained a result of Dg/g =(0.4 +-1.2)x10^{-7}.Comment: 4 Pages, 4 figures, accepted for Physical Review Letter

Community Benefit Sharing and Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Projects: Policy Guidance for Governments

    Get PDF
The massive and rapid expansion of renewable energy is needed to limit global warming, so its social acceptance must be assured. While not a silver bullet, well-designed and governed benefit-sharing arrangements can lead to beneficial outcomes in ways that speak to affected communities’ needs and interests. In partnership with the Green Hydrogen Organization and to support the efforts of the Planning for Climate Commission, this report offers high-level guidance to governments that seek to ramp up the development of renewable energy projects, including power generation and grid infrastructure. The report emphasizes that governments need a strong and coherent policy approach addressing the rights, expectations, and perspectives of project-affected communities. Direct community benefits can be vital in ensuring communities are treated fairly, while simultaneously building support that can bolster project development. Examples of ways in which governments can ensure the fair treatment and integration of project-affected communities include: Encouraging and ideally mandating community consultation or co-design of benefit-sharing arrangements. Ensuring that communities have access to effective and accessible grievance mechanisms that empower them to bring forward complaints regarding the operation of community benefit-sharing arrangements. Enabling shared community ownership, where communities receive a fair distribution of benefits from renewables projects if the community is adequately supported in their decision to enter into it, and in their ongoing efforts to manage the projects. Designing benefit-sharing arrangements in a way that considers what happens when a renewable project reaches the end of its initial lifespan

Factor influencing trade show perfomance for spanish art and collecting sector

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is to determine the direct relationship between the planning of exhibition participation. This will allow exhibitors understanding why they decide to go to a trade show and what the objectives are. The study focuses on the art and collecting sector, great international importance, because is relevant in the media and the benefits to the host city. Spanish art sector has a character-ristic disparity, its performance in relation to the number of exhibitors and visitors, generally, is the inverse of the exhibition sector. Finally, the results confirm that exhibitors pursue the relationships, and information search and strengthen their image.

Predicted Epitope Abundance Supports Vaccine-Induced Cytotoxic Protection Against SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern

    Get PDF
The effect of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants on vaccine efficacy is of critical importance. In this study, the potential impact of mutations that facilitate escape from the cytotoxic cellular immune response in these new virus variants for the 551 most abundant HLA class I alleles was analyzed. Computational prediction showed that most of these alleles, that cover >90% of the population, contain enough epitopes without escape mutations in the principal SARS-CoV-2 variants. These data suggest that the cytotoxic cellular immune protection elicited by vaccination is not greatly affected by emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. This research was supported by grants from COV20_00679 (MPY 222-20), to MM, MPY 509/19 to AM-G, and MPY 388/18 to DL of “Acción Estratégica en Salud” from the ISCIII.S
