Since the selfish DNA concept, it is appreciated that genomes are also molded by arms-races against natural TE inhabitants. However, our understanding of evolutionary processes shaping TEs adaptive populations is scarce. Here, we review the events of recombination associated toreverse-transcription in LTR retrotransposons, a process shuffling their genetic variants during replicative mobilization. Current evidence may suggest that recombinogenic retrotransposons could beneficially exploit host suppression, where clan behavior facilitates their speciation and diversification.     El propósito de este estudio es realizar un análisis sobre los diferentes bailes tradicionales que existen en Cantabria. Se trata de un estudio comparativo de los bailes en función de las diferentes áreas comarcales que componen Cantabria, mediante la explicación de las características que diferencian a estos, la música que se utiliza, los participantes, así como el vestuario y el escenario donde se interpretan estas danzas. Para ello, el alumno participa dentro de una agrupación para conocer desde dentro su dinámica y realizará un análisis de contenido de todo aquello referente a las danzas tradicionales de Cantabria, sirviéndose de la literatura existente sobre el tema y entrevistas a personas relacionadas con el folklore. Los resultados muestran que cada una de las comarcas posee unas determinadas características etnográficas y orográficas que van a determinar el tipo de baile, indumentaria e instrumentalización que se utiliza. Esta investigación puede servir de gran utilidad para conocer nuestras costumbres culturales y fomentar que la población se interese por los bailes tradicionales de Cantabria

    Bridging the gap between human knowledge and machine learning

    Nowadays, great amount of data is being created by several sources from academic, scientific, business and industrial activities. Such data intrinsically contains meaningful information allowing for developing techniques, and have scientific validity to explore the information thereof. In this connection, the aim of artificial intelligence (AI) is getting new knowledge to make decisions properly. AI has taken an important place in scientific and technology development communities, and recently develops computer-based processing devices for modern machines. Under the premise, the premise that the feedback provided by human reasoning -which is holistic, flexible and parallel- may enhance the data analysis, the need for the integration of natural and artificial intelligence has emerged. Such an integration makes the process of knowledge discovery more effective, providing the ability to easily find hidden trends and patterns belonging to the database predictive model. As well, allowing for new observations and considerations from beforehand known data by using both data analysis methods and knowledge and skills from human reasoning. In this work, we review main basics and recent works on artificial and natural intelligence integration in order to introduce users and researchers on this emergent field.     Photovoltaic generation model as a function of weather variables using artificial intelligence techniques

    The optimisation of photovoltaic systems of electricity generation involve the necesity of real data of the different variables as well as determination of their relationships. In the field of photovoltaic solar energy there is interest to predict the energy generation in terms of solar radiation and climatic parameters. For this purpose, it is needed a good sensing and measurement of these parameters. In this paper, we propose a method based on artificial intelligence techniques for obtaining the generated energy under climatic conditions during a year. In addition, we propose a model that relates short-circuit current with radiation, considering the true nonlinear behavior of the relationship between variables. The results of the proposed method using real data show its validity and usefulness in predicting the generated energy by photovoltaic modules and the search for alternative methods of measuring global radiation at low cost and reasonable error.Fil: Sánchez Reinoso, Carlos Roberto.     Supersymmetric One-family Model without Higgsinos

    The Higgs potential and the mass spectrum of the N=1 supersymmetric extension of a recently proposed one-family model based on the local gauge group SU(3)cSU(3)LU(1)XSU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X, which is a subgroup of the electroweak-strong unification group E6E_6, is analyzed. In this model the slepton multiplets play the role of the Higgs scalars and no Higgsinos are needed, with the consequence that the sneutrino, the selectron and six other sleptons play the role of the Goldstone bosons. We show how the μ\mu problem is successfully addressed in the context of this model which also predicts the existence of a light CP-odd scalar.Comment: REVTeX 4, 10 pages.     Ultrasonography-guided anterior approach for axillary nerve blockade: an anatomical study

    Combined ultrasound-guided blockade of the suprascapular and axillary nerves has been proposed as an alternative to interscalene blockade for pain control in shoulder joint pathology or post-surgical care. This technique could help avoid respiratory complications and/or almost total upper limb palsy. Nowadays, the axillary nerve blockade is mostly performed using an in-plane caudal-to-cephalic approach from the posterior surface of the shoulder, reaching the nerve immediately after it exits the neurovascular quadrangular space (part of the spatium axillare). Despite precluding most respiratory complications, this approach has not made post-surgical pain relief any better than an interscalene blockade, probably because articular branches of the axillary nerve are not blocked. Cephalic to caudal Methylene Blue injections were placed in the first segment of the axillary nerve of six Thiel-embalmed cadavers using an ultrasound-guided anterior approach in order to compare the distribution with that produced by a posterior approach to the contralateral axillary nerve in the same cadaver. Another 21 formalin-fixed cadavers were bilaterally dissected to identify the articular branches of the axillary nerve. We found a good spread of the dye on the axillary nerve and a constant relationship of this nerve with the subscapularis muscle. The dye reached the musculocutaneous nerve, which also contributes to shoulder joint innervation. We describe the anatomical landmarks for an ultrasonography-guided anterior axillary nerve blockade and hypothesize that this anterior approach will provide better pain control than the posterior approach owing to complete blocking of the joint nerve.     Homeostatic control of polyamine levels under long-term salt stress in Arabidopsis

    Salt stress has been frequently studied in its first osmotic phase. Very often, data regarding the second ionic phase is missing. It has also been suggested that Putrescine or/and Spermine could be responsible for salt resistance. In order to test this hypothesis under long-term salt stress, we obtained Arabidopsis thaliana transgenic plants harboring pRD29A::oatADC or pRD29A::GUS construction. Although Putrescine was the only polyamine significantly increased after salt acclimation in pRD29A::oatADC transgenic lines, this rendered in no advantage to this kind of stress. The higher Spermine levels found in WT and transgenic lines when compared to control conditions along with no increment on Putrescine levels in WT plants under salt acclimation, leads us to analyze Spermine effect on pADC1 and pADC2 expression. Increasing levels of this polyamine inhibits these promoters expression while enhances pRD29A expression, making Spermine the polyamine responsible for salt acclimation, and the transgenic lines developed in this work suitable for studying Putrescine roles in conditions where its biosynthesis would be inhibited in the WT genotype

    Análisis de concordancia de diferentes metodologías para la identificación de aislamientos orales de especies de candida

    Background: The yeasts species determination is fundamental not only for an accurate diagnosis but also for establishing a suitable patient treatment. We performed a concordance study of five methodologies for the species identification of oral isolates of Candida in Colombia. Methods: Sixty-seven Candida isolates were tested by; API® 20C-AUX, Vitek®2 Compact, Vitek®MS, Microflex® and a molecular test (panfungal PCR and sequencing). The commercial cost and processing time of the samples was done by graphical analysis. Results: Panfungal PCR differentiated 12 species of Candida, Vitek®MS and Microflex® methods identified 9 species, and API® 20C-AUX and Vitek®2 Compact methods identified 8 species each. Weighted Kappa (wK) showed a high agreement between Panfungal PCR, Vitek®MS, Microflex® and API® 20C-AUX (wK 0.62-0.93). The wK that involved the Vitek®2 Compact method presented moderate or good concordances compared with the other methods (wK 0.56-0.73). Methodologies based on MALDI TOF MS required 4 minutes to generate results and the Microflex® method had the lowest selling price. Conclusion: The methods evaluated showed high concordance in their results, being higher for the molecular methods and the methodologies based on MALDI TOF. The latter are faster and cheaper, presenting as promising alternatives for the routine identification of yeast species of the genus Candida. © 2018. Universidad del Valle

    [Folate, vitamin B12 and human health].

    During the past decade the role of folate and vitamin B12 in human nutrition have been under constant re-examination. Basic knowledge on the metabolism and interactions between these essential nutrients has expanded and multiple complexities have been unraveled. These micronutrients have shared functions and intertwined metabolic pathways that define the size of the "methyl donor" pool utilized in multiple metabolic pathways; these include DNA methylation and synthesis of nucleic acids. In Chile, folate deficiency is virtually nonexistent, while vitamin B12 deficiency affects approximately 8.5-51% depending on the cut-off value used to define deficiency. Folate is found naturally mainly in vegetables or added as folic acid to staple foods. Vitamin B12 in its natural form is present only in foods of animal origin, which is why deficit is more common among strict vegetarians and populations with a low intake of animal foods. Poor folate status in vulnerable women of childbearing age increases the risk of neural tube birth defects, so the critical time for the contribution of folic acid is several months before conception since neural tube closure occurs during the first weeks of life. The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is lower in older adults, who are considered to have higher risk of gastric mucosa atrophy, altered production of intrinsic factor and acid secretion. Deficiency of these vitamins is associated with hematological disorders. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also induce clinical and sub-clinical neurological and of other disorders.
