The Language of Reputation and Scandal: Translations of Lived Experiences in Spanish, English, and Spanglish Oral Narratives

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to understand a framework for the structure of oral narratives that operate in different languages, cultures, and topics as translations of lived experiences. Interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, and Spanglish in North and Latin America about gossip and scandal. Oral personal narratives are translations of lived experiences—coded information that negotiate, build, or destroy credibility, relationships, or the self; they manage reputations. This examination is framed under Labovian narrative analysis and the pragmatic implications on the management of reputation in narratives about gossip and scandal are addressed

Minimally Invasive Antral Membrane Balloon Elevation (MIAMBE): A 3 cases report

Abstract: Long-standing partial edentulism in the posterior segment of an atrophic maxilla is a challenging treatment. Sinus elevation via Cadwell Luc has several anatomical restrictions, post-operative discomfort and the need of complex surgical techniques. The osteotome approach is a significantly safe and efficient tecnique, as a variation of this technique the "minimal invasive antral membrane balloon elevation" (MIAMBE) has been developed, which use a hydraulic system. We present three cases in which the system was used MIAMBE for tooth replacement in the posterior. This procedure seems to be a relatively simple and safe solution for the insertion of endo-osseus implants in the posterior atrophic maxilla. Keywords: "Dental Implants"[MeSH], "Sinus floor augmentation"[MeSH], balloon.

    Get PDF

Observer-biased bearing condition monitoring: from fault detection to multi-fault classification

    Get PDF
Bearings are simultaneously a fundamental component and one of the principal causes of failure in rotary machinery. The work focuses on the employment of fuzzy clustering for bearing condition monitoring, i.e., fault detection and classification. The output of a clustering algorithm is a data partition (a set of clusters) which is merely a hypothesis on the structure of the data. This hypothesis requires validation by domain experts. In general, clustering algorithms allow a limited usage of domain knowledge on the cluster formation process. In this study, a novel method allowing for interactive clustering in bearing fault diagnosis is proposed. The method resorts to shrinkage to generalize an otherwise unbiased clustering algorithm into a biased one. In this way, the method provides a natural and intuitive way to control the cluster formation process, allowing for the employment of domain knowledge to guiding it. The domain expert can select a desirable level of granularity ranging from fault detection to classification of a variable number of faults and can select a specific region of the feature space for detailed analysis. Moreover, experimental results under realistic conditions show that the adopted algorithm outperforms the corresponding unbiased algorithm (fuzzy c-means) which is being widely used in this type of problems. Generative Adversarial Networks Selection Approach for Extremely Imbalanced Fault Diagnosis of Reciprocating Machinery

    Get PDF
At present, countless approaches to fault diagnosis in reciprocating machines have been proposed, all considering that the available machinery dataset is in equal proportions for all conditions. However, when the application is closer to reality, the problem of data imbalance is increasingly evident. In this paper, we propose a method for the creation of diagnoses that consider an extreme imbalance in the available data. Our approach first processes the vibration signals of the machine using a wavelet packet transform-based feature-extraction stage. Then, improved generative models are obtained with a dissimilarity-based model selection to artificially balance the dataset. Finally, a Random Forest classifier is created to address the diagnostic task. This methodology provides a considerable improvement with 99% of data imbalance over other approaches reported in the literature, showing performance similar to that obtained with a balanced set of data.National Natural Science Foundation of China, under Grant 51605406National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 7180104

In this project, an investigation was carried out related to Attention Deficit Disorder and how, according to the theoretical arguments of Neuroeducation, Augmented Reality can have an effect on the level of attention. To validate the research, we had the support of the Peruvian Association for Attention Deficit (APDA), which provided contact with the population aged 7 to 11 who suffer from this disorder. The project was based on the development of an AR application under the ICONIX methodology with theoretical concepts that were to be evaluated in the population by means of a cancellation test and thus check if their level of attention increases or decreases compared to a traditional environment. The implementation of the Augmented Reality application was developed under the ARKit 2 framework using the Swift 5 programming language in the Xcode 10 IDE. During development, various 3D models were used that interacted with users. With the results of the cancellation test, it was possible to conclude that the application with Augmented Reality positively influences the level of attention of children with Attention Deficit Disorder, having an improvement of 42% in the average score obtained.Tesi
