    PINGS: the PPAK IFS Nearby Galaxies Survey

    We present the PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) Nearby Galaxies Survey: PINGS, a 2-dimensional spectroscopic mosaicking of 17 nearby disk galaxies in the optical wavelength range. This project represents the first attempt to obtain continuous coverage spectra of the whole surface of a galaxy in the nearby universe. The final data set comprises more than 50000 individual spectra, covering in total an observed area of nearly 80 arcmin^2. In this paper we describe the main astrophysical issues to be addressed by the PINGS project, we present the galaxy sample and explain the observing strategy, the data reduction process and all uncertainties involved.     Short-term effects of traffic noise on suicides and emergency hospital admissions due to anxiety and depression in Madrid (Spain)

    Studies show a relationship between some mental illnesses and suicides and different environmental variables such as air pollution, characterized by stress at the neuropsychological level. Despite the fact that traffic noise is also a powerful neurological stressor, studies that relate traffic noise to these mental disorders are practically non-existent. The objective is to analyze the short-term impact that chemical air pollution, traffic noise and thermal extremes have on emergency hospital admissions due to anxiety, dementia and suicides in the city of Madrid. This ecological, longitudinal study uses generalized linear models with Poisson link to analyze the short-term impact of the average daily concentrations of chemical pollutants (NO2, PM10, PM2.5, O3), noise pollution indicators (Leqday, Leqnight and Leq24h) and temperatures during heat waves (Theat) and cold waves (Tcold) on daily admissions to emergency services in the city of Madrid from 2010 to 2013 due to anxiety (ICD-10: F32), depression (ICD-10: F40-F42) and suicide (ICD-10: X60-X84). The results show no association between any of the chemical pollutants considered and the dependent variables studied. On the contrary, the values of Leqday are associated with the three variables analyzed in lag 0 for the cases of anxiety and depression and in lag 1 for suicides, with RR: 1.20 (IC95% 1.14 1.26), RR: 1.11 (IC95% 1.06 1.16) and RR: 1.17 (IC95% 1.05 1.30), respectively, for increases of 1 dB(A) in the values of Leqday. An association was also found between Tcold and admissions for anxiety in lag 9 with RR: 1.62 (IC95% 1.18 2.22) for increases of 1 °C in the values of Tcold. Traffic noise can be considered an important risk factor related to the illnesses and anxiety and depression and for suicides in the city of Madrid, although new studies are needed to support the findings shown here.The authors gratefully acknowledge Project ENPY 376/18 and Project ENPY 107/18 grants from the Institute of Health Carlos III.S

    Climate change and the kidney

    The worldwide increase in temperature has resulted in a marked increase in heat waves (heat extremes) that carries a markedly increased risk for morbidity and mortality. The kidney has a unique role not only in protecting the host from heat and dehydration but also is an important site of heat-associated disease. Here we review the potential impact of global warming and heat extremes on kidney diseases. High temperatures can result in increased core temperatures, dehydration, and blood hyperosmolality. Heatstroke (both clinical and subclinical whole-body hyperthermia) may have a major role in causing both acute kidney disease, leading to increased risk of acute kidney injury from rhabdomyolysis, or heat-induced inflammatory injury to the kidney. Recurrent heat and dehydration can result in chronic kidney disease (CKD) in animals and theoretically plays a role in epidemics of CKD developing in hot regions of the world where workers are exposed to extreme heat. Heat stress and dehydration also has a role in kidney stone formation, and poor hydration habits may increase the risk for recurrent urinary tract infections. The resultant social and economic consequences include disability and loss of productivity and employment. Given the rise in world temperatures, there is a major need to better understand how heat stress can induce kidney disease, how best to provide adequate hydration, and ways to reduce the negative effects of chronic heat exposure.Published versio

    Decontamination of Diesel particles from air by using the Counterfog (R) system

    The existence of particles with diameter under 10m in air is strongly correlated with respiratory diseases. These particles are profusely produced by heating systems, traffic, and Diesel engines creating a serious problem to modern cities. Natural mechanisms removing particles from the atmosphere are too slow to deal with the huge amount of particles daily released by human activity. The objective of this work is to measure the effectiveness of a new technology called Counterfog (R) to eliminate airborne particles. The results show that Counterfog (R) is able to wash out PM10, PM5, and PM2.5 Diesel-generated airborne particles quite efficiently.This work has been funded by the FP7-SEC-2012-1 program of the EU Commission under grant number 312804

    MPC for optimal dispatch of an AC-linked hybrid PV/wind/biomass/H2 system incorporating demand response

    [EN] A Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy based on the Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) is proposed for the optimal dispatch of renewable generation units and demand response in a grid-tied hybrid system. The generating system is based on the experimental setup installed in a Distributed Energy Resources Laboratory (LabDER), which includes an AC micro-grid with small scale PV/Wind/Biomass systems. Energy storage is by lead-acid batteries and an H2 system (electrolyzer, H2 cylinders and Fuel Cell). The energy demand is residential in nature, consisting of a base load plus others that can be disconnected or moved to other times of the day within a demand response program. Based on the experimental data from each of the LabDER renewable generation and storage systems, a micro-grid operating model was developed in MATLAB(C) to simulate energy flows and their interaction with the grid. The proposed optimization algorithm seeks the minimum hourly cost of the energy consumed by the demand and the maximum use of renewable resources, using the minimum computational resources.     Early vascular endothelial complications after hematopoietic cell transplantation: Role of the endotheliopathy in biomarkers and target therapies development

    This work aims to review the role of endothelial dysfunction underlying the main complications appearing early after autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The endothelial damage as the pathophysiological substrate of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is well established. However, there is growing evidence of the involvement of endothelial dysfunction in other complications, such as acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMAs). Moreover, HCT-related endotheliopathy is not only limited to the HCT setting, as there is increasing evidence of its implication in complications derived from other cellular therapies. We also review the incidence and the risk factors of the main HCT complications and the biological evidence of the endothelial involvement and other linked pathways in their development. In addition, we cover the state of the art regarding the potential use of the biomarkers of endotheliopathy in the prediction, the early diagnosis, and the follow-up of the HCT complications and summarize current knowledge points to the endothelium and the other linked pathways described as potential targets for the prevention and treatment of HCT-complications.     Gender differences in adaptation to heat in Spain (1983-2018)

    In Spain the average temperature has increased by 1.7 °C since pre-industrial times. There has been an increase in heat waves both in terms of frequency and intensity, with a clear impact in terms of population health. The effect of heat waves on daily mortality presents important territorial differences. Gender also affects these impacts, as a determinant that conditions social inequalities in health. There is evidence that women may be more susceptible to extreme heat than men, although there are relatively few studies that analyze differences in the vulnerability and adaptation to heat by sex. This could be related to physiological causes. On the other hand, one of the indicators used to measure vulnerability to heat in a population and its adaptation is the minimum mortality temperature (MMT) and its temporal evolution. The aim of this study was to analyze the values of MMT in men and women and its temporal evolution during the 1983-2018 period in Spain's provinces. An ecological, longitudinal retrospective study was carried out of time series data, based on maximum daily temperature and daily mortality data corresponding to the study period. Using cubic and quadratic fits between daily mortality rates and the temperature, the minimum values of these functions were determined, which allowed for determining MMT values. Furthermore, we used an improved methodology that provided for the estimation of missing MMT values when polynomial fits were inexistent. This analysis was carried out for each year. Later, based on the annual values of MMT, a linear fit was carried out to determine the rate of evolution of MMT for men and for women at the province level. Average MMT for all of Spain's provinces was 29.4 °C in the case of men and 28.7 °C in the case of women. The MMT for men was greater than that of women in 86 percent of the total provinces analyzed, which indicates greater vulnerability among women. In terms of the rate of variation in MMT during the period analyzed, that of men was 0.39 °C/decade, compared to 0.53 °C/decade for women, indicating greater adaptation to heat among women, compared to men. The differences found between men and women were statistically significant. At the province level, the results show great heterogeneity.     The Landau Pole and Z′Z^{\prime} decays in the 331 bilepton model

    We calculate the decay widths and branching ratios of the extra neutral boson Z′Z^{\prime} predicted by the 331 bilepton model in the framework of two different particle contents. These calculations are performed taken into account oblique radiative corrections, and Flavor Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC) under the ansatz of Matsuda as a texture for the quark mass matrices. Contributions of the order of 10−1−10−210^{-1}-10^{-2} are obtained in the branching ratios, and partial widths about one order of magnitude bigger in relation with other non- and bilepton models are also obtained. A Landau-like pole arise at 3.5 TeV considering the full particle content of the minimal model (MM), where the exotic sector is considered as a degenerated spectrum at 3 TeV scale. The Landau pole problem can be avoid at the TeV scales if a new leptonic content running below the threshold at % 3 TeV is implemented as suggested by other authors.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX2

    Effects of local factors on adaptation to heat in Spain (1983-2018)

    The European Union is currently immersed in policy development to address the effects of climate change around the world. Key plans and processes for facilitating adaptation to high temperatures and for reducing the adverse effects on health are among the most urgent measures. Therefore, it is necessary to understand those factors that influence adaptation. The aim of this study was to provide knowledge related to the social, climate and economic factors that are related to the evolution of minimum mortality temperatures (MMT) in Spain in the rural and urban contexts, during the 1983-2018 time period. For this purpose, local factors were studied regarding their relationship to levels of adaptation to heat. MMT is an indicator that allows for establishing a relationship to between mortality and temperature, and is a valid indicator to assess the capacity of adaptation to heat of a certain population. MMT is obtained through the maximum daily temperature and daily mortality of the study period. The evolution of MMT values for Spain was established in a previous paper. An ecological, longitudinal and retrospective study was carried out. Generalized linear models (GLM) were performed to identify the variables that appeared to be related to adaptation. The adaptation was calculated as the difference in variation in MMT based on the average increase in maximum daily temperatures. In terms of adaptation to heat, urban populations have adapted more than non-urban populations. Seventy-nine percent (n = 11) of urban provinces have adapted to heat, compared to twenty-one percent (n = 3) of rural provinces that have not adapted. In terms of urban zones, income level and habituation to heat (values over the 95th percentile) were variables shown to be related to adaptation. In contrast, among non-urban provinces, a greater number of housing rehabilitation licenses and a greater number of health professionals were variables associated with higher increases in MMT, and therefore, with adaptation. These results highlight the need to carry out studies that allow for identifying the local factors that are most relevant and influential in population adaptation.     Calidad de vida y estrés en estudiantes de medicina en Cajamarca-Perú-2023

    Objectives: Determine the influence of quality of life on the stress of medical students at a university in Cajamarca during 2023. Identify the level of quality of life and the degree of stress, and establish the dimensions of quality of life and others. factors that influence stress. Materials and methods: The present study was basic with a quantitative approach, cross-sectional with a correlational method. The student population was 175 students, and the sample was 106 students. The SISCO SV-21 questionnaire with Cronbach's alpha of 0.85 and the WHOQOL-BREF 26 questionnaire with Cronbach's alpha of 0.89 were used. For the treatment of the collected information, descriptive and inferential statistics were used with a level of significance p<0.05 using the Excel statistical package and the Epi Info system. Results: We found 71.70% high levels of stress and 96 % of a low quality of life. A value of p = 0.317 was found with respect to the relationship of the two variables. Regarding the dimensions of the quality of life that predisposes to have high stress, it was found significant to psychological health (p = 0.0025) and PR of 2.88; and social relationships (p= 0.036). Finally, in relation to gender and presentation of stress (significant p of =0.0084) with PR of 1.37. Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between stress and the quality of life of medical students. There are high levels of stress and a feeling of poor quality of life among students. The female sex, mental health and social relationships are significantly related to high levels of stress.Objetivos: Determinar la influencia de la calidad de vida en el estrés de los estudiantes de medicina de una universidad de Cajamarca durante el 2023. Identificar el nivel de calidad de vida y el grado de estrés, y establecer las dimensiones de calidad de vida y otros factores que influyen en el estrés. Materiales y métodos: El presente estudio fue tipo básico con enfoque cuantitativo, de tipo transversal con método correlacional. La población de estudiantes fue de 175 estudiantes, y la muestra fue de 106 estudiantes. Se usó el cuestionario SISCO SV-21 con alfa de Cronbach del 0.85 y el cuestionario WHOQOL-BREF 26 con alfa de Cronbach del 0.89. Para el tratamiento de la información recolectada, se usó la estadística descriptiva e inferencial con un nivel de significancia p<0.05 usando para ello el paquete estadístico Excel y el sistema Epi Info. Resultados: Encontramos un 71,70% altos niveles de estrés y 96% de una calidad de vida baja. Se halló un valor de p = 0.317 con respecto a la relación de las dos variables. Con respecto a las dimensiones de la calidad de vida que predispone a tener estrés alto, se encontró significativo a la salud psicológica (p = 0.0025) y RP de 2.88; y las relaciones sociales (p= 0.036). Finalmente, en relación a sexo y presentación de estrés (p significativo de =0,0084) con RP de 1.37. Conclusión: No existe correlación significativa entre el estrés y la calidad de vida de los estudiantes de medicina, Existen elevados niveles de estrés y de sensación de mala calidad de vida entre los estudiantes.
