Value relevance of deferred tax assets in the Brazilian banking industry

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar a relevância informacional do acentuado nível de ativos fiscais diferidos (AFDs) na indústria bancária brasileira, identificando se tais ativos influenciam o valor de mercado das instituições bancárias de capital aberto. A avaliação da relevância informacional dos AFDs na indústria bancária é tema incipiente na literatura nacional e registra resultados conflitantes em pesquisas internacionais. No Brasil, apresenta características notadamente quanto à dimensão das assimetrias entre o lucro contábil e fiscal que justificam a preocupação sobre os efeitos desses ativos no valor de mercado dos bancos. A literatura aponta questionamentos em relação aos AFDs quanto à sua capacidade de geração de benefícios econômicos e de controle da entidade, especialmente na indústria bancária, por não cumprirem a função de intermediação financeira, o que os tornaria desprovidos de substância econômica. Isso sinalizaria potenciais riscos e fragilidades dos bancos, como a redução na qualidade do capital próprio e dos lucros, além de distorções nos indicadores econômico-financeiros, o que justificaria uma percepção negativa por parte dos investidores. Como principal contribuição do estudo para a literatura, pode ser destacada a identificação de que, no mercado brasileiro, as assimetrias entre o resultado tributário e societário dos bancos, origem dos AFDs, impactam negativamente no valor de mercado dessas instituições. Foi testada empiricamente a hipótese de pesquisa no mercado de capitais brasileiro, usando dados de 2000 a 2017 dos bancos de capital aberto, por meio da estimação de dois modelos – Market-to-Book e Ohlson (1995). Os resultados deste estudo demonstraram que, no mercado de capitais brasileiro, há relação negativa entre o estoque de AFDs dos bancos e o valor de mercado dessas entidades, corroborando a hipótese de que os investidores identificam a relevância desses ativos na estrutura patrimonial como sinal de comprometimento da qualidade do capital e do lucro.This study aimed to investigate the informational relevance to the capital market of the significant level of deferred tax assets (DTAs) in the Brazilian banking industry, identifying whether such assets influence the market value of publicly-held banks. The value relevance of DTAs in the banking industry is an incipient topic in the national literature, with conflicting results in the international research. Brazil presents characteristics, most notably regarding the dimension of the asymmetries between accounting and taxable profit, which justify concern about the effects of DTAs on the market value of banks. The literature highlights issues involving DTAs related to their ability to generate economic benefits and control of the entity, especially in the banking industry, due to not fulfilling the role of financial intermediation, which would make them devoid of economic substance. This would signal potential bank risks and weaknesses, such as a reduction in the quality of equity and profits, in addition to distortions in the economic-financial indicators, which would justify a negative perception on the part of investors. As the study’s main contribution to the literature, we can highlight the identification that in the Brazilian market, the asymmetries between banks’ taxable and corporate earnings, the origin of deferred tax assets, weigh negatively on the market value of these institutions. We empirically tested the hypothesis in the Brazilian capital market, using data from 2000 to 2017 on publicly-held banks, by estimating two models – Market-to-Book and Ohlson (1995). The results of this study show that in the Brazilian capital market there is a negative relationship between the volume of the banks’ DTAs and the market value of these entities, corroborating the hypothesis that investors identify the relevance of these assets in the equity structure as a sign of the quality of the equity and the profit of these entities being undermined

ORDEM E PROGRESSO: (DES) ESTABILIDADE POLÍTICA E DESENVOLVIMENTO ECONÔMICO NO BRASIL

A proposta do artigo é analisar a relevância dos lemas positivistas para a manutenção da estabilidade política e econômica no Brasil de forma a garantir que, mesmo em momentos de transição, não ocorressem rupturas significativas que alterassem o modelo de estratificação social.  A abordagem do tema por essa perspectiva pretende demonstrar que a manutenção da ordem social é imprescindível ao progresso econômico pretendido pela classe dominante, mas que, ao contrário, as melhorias econômicas não indicam, necessariamente, a tranquilidade dos setores oponentes, ainda que esta seja a aspiração dos grupos encastelados no poder ou dirigentes da produção. A exposição dos fatos históricos ocorridos ao longo do século XX demonstra que as crises políticas ocorreram tanto em função da estagnação quanto do desenvolvimento econômico e que ambos, também, podem coincidir com estabilidade política

Network ethics and government to business relationships in Portugal

The analysis of ethical issues in Internet-enabled marketplaces remains generally under-explored and this gap is even more prominent in practices associated with G2B networks. This paper argues that the application of Network Ethics to G2B relationships requires a focus on specific questions that arise from the evolution of the way government has come to interact with business. To this purpose, the paper starts by outlining the relevance of universal values to Network Ethics. The next section draws out and briefly discusses the most relevant ethical issues that arise in the rapidly changing context of G2B relationships. To provide an application and substantiate the claims of the paper, the development of public e-procurement in Portugal is presented and analysed in the scope of the background public policies for information society and e-government development in Portugal. It is shown that use of the Internet for e-procurement purposes is growing in Portugal and the main constraints and risks associated with further developments are laid out and discussed. Overall the theoretical analysis and the empirical case point to the growing importance of developing interoperability standards and promoting greater transparency and competition in public e-procurement. It is further argued that reliable analysis in terms of Internet-enabled marketplaces requires both a solid ethical framework and its application in conjunction with empirical knowledge of the situations being studied, and that only in this way can network ethics effectively contribute to the promotion of greater accountability and ethical behaviour on the ground

Brand communication on Instagram during the COVID-19 pandemic: perceptions of users and brands

Social media, based on user-generated content, connectivity, and participation, have become a new environment for brands to capture attention and build lasting relationships with customers and fans. Participating in these platforms demanded a paradigmatic shift in branding and brand communication, who became more focused on listening to consumers and fans, interacting and collaborating with them, and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships. Digital influencers act as mediators between brands and their followers and play a pivotal role in Instagram marketing strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting confinement of the population and emergency status adopted in many countries, is having a profound impact on brands. Many of them, unable to produce and market their products or offering their services, are focusing on their communication, on remaining relevant or becoming more relevant for their fans and customers. Brand communication on Instagram has changed during this short period, and our exploratory study sets out to map the main changes and to understand how both brands, influencers and users perceive them. This article presents results from an online survey to a purposive sample of 160 Instagrammers, addressing their perceptions about the impact of these changes on their relationship with brands and influencers. We complement the perspective of users with interviews to 25 other relevant agents, namely Instagram influencers, marketing agencies and brands with relevant presence on Instagram

Biodiesel production via ethylic transesterification with basic zeolites

Neste trabalho, teve-se como objetivo a preparação de zeólitas básicas através da modifcação de zeólitas USY com bário e estrôncio e sua aplicação na reação de transesterifcação de óleo de soja com etanol, para produção de ésteres de etila (biodiesel). Além disso, foram estudados os efeitos da geração de sítios básicos na superfície dos catalisadores, bem como suas respectivas atividades por três ciclos catalíticos. O biodiesel obtido nos ciclos foi analisado por HPLC, CG-FID e espectroscopia Raman. Já os catalisadores foram caracterizados por FTIR, análises térmicas e adsorção gasosa de piridina e CO2.Soybean oil transesterifcation with ethanol was carried out in a batch reactor using USY zeolites modifed with barium and strontium (15 wt.%) as catalysts. A series of three catalytic cycles were performed for each zeolite without any loss of activity. The biodiesel product was analyzed by HPLC and FT-Raman, and the catalysts by pyridine and CO2 adsorption. Ba/USY provided higher conversions (> 97%) than Sr/USY (< 75%). The increased catalytic activity of Ba/USY was attributed to two different effects: a larger number of basic sites; and a lower interaction between barium species and HUSY Brønsted sites

A Piezoelectric Device for Measurement and Power Harvesting Applications

Com o apoio RAADRI.With the fast growth of wireless communications between nodes/sensor units, devices installed in remote places require power energy supply solutions to assure their functionally and data communication capabilities. For these applications energy harvesting takes place as a good solution, to increase the availability of energy, in opposition to the conventional systems of energy supply. Regenerative energy sources like thermoelectric, magnetic, piezoelectric, and/or renewable sources such as photovoltaic, wind, among others, allowed the development of different powering solutions for sensor units. The purpose of this work is to characterize a piezoelectric device to measure and capture mechanical vibrations from equipments, structures and piping vibrations, as well as from other sources. The study is carried out taking into account the power supply capabilities of piezoelectric devices as a function of the amplitude and frequency of the vibration stimulus, as well as, the electrical characteristics of the load circuit

Vivências no estágio supervisionado nos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental do curso de Pedagogia da UFSC

Pedagogia.O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar algumas considerações sobre as vivências das discentes do 8º semestre, 2014.2, do Curso de Pedagogia, da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina no Estágio Supervisionado nos Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental. Os resultados desta pesquisa foram conseguidos por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a importância do estágio e sobre a relação teoria e prática na formação docente, bem como, por meio dos dados coletados com um questionário realizado no 9º semestre da referida turma. Com este último instrumento buscou-se identificar a avaliação das discentes sobre esse momento na formação, as expectativas quanto a sua profissão e descobertas após a vivência do estágio no curso de Pedagogia da UFSC. Para o entendimento da realidade encontrada neste estágio supervisionado e suas etapas, apresento parte do registro do vivenciado pela minha equipe como estagiários, com os alunos da 5º ano de nível fundamental. Dos resultados que se pode verificar com essa pesquisa estão, entre outros, uma avaliação positiva das relações estabelecidas com as crianças e profissionais no campo estagiado, e, no geral, uma boa preparação na graduação para este período de estágio. Como aspectos negativos, pouco tempo em campo, entrada tardia nos anos iniciais pela organização da matriz curricular do Curso de Pedagogia, problemas estruturais das escolas, falta de recursos e materiais para realização de um estágio mais diversificado, dificuldade de dar voz e vez para todas as crianças em sala e um desestímulo de seguir a carreira docente no Ensino Fundamental em metade dos estudantes de Pedagogia da UFSC, questionados em seu semestre de conclusão do curso
