Motivation is an important predictor of ethical awareness; however, it is not easy to assess. The goal of our study is to examine the relationship between motivation and ethical awareness in engineering students. We focus on two personality measures: person-thing orientation and spheres of control and test their association with ethical awareness using engineering scenarios that present ethical dilemmas. We predict that engineering students who score higher on the personality dimension of personthing orientation will display more ethical awareness than those who score lower. We also predict that students with a higher level of personal control will also display more ethical awareness. Two groups of students were involved in the study. Group 1 was formed by fifty-three first-year engineering students from University in the United States and Group 2 was represented by sixty-four sophomore engineering students in Engineering School in Spain. Students worked individually on case studies that presenting ethical dilemmas; they were asked to write short essays describing how they would respond to each situation. Then the essays were analyzed using an ethical reasoning and a global awareness rubric. Results revealed that 1) the context/nature of the students’ responses to the case study varied greatly, 2) personality traits and global and ethical perspective, all correlate to students’ ethical decisions as measured by their responses to the case studies scores, 3) there is an alignment between the SOC and the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI) dimensions that merits further exploration

Get PDF

Creativity is a growing demand in today’s world. Education for creativity takes hierarchy, as well as the search for ways to evaluate its promotion. This paper presents partial results of a research project aimed at the study of the promotion of creative qualities in science education. The CREA test was used as an instrument to evaluate the creativity of students. The results allow us to propose limitations of this test as a tool for a global measure of creativity. The conventional analysis could measure one of the creative qualities: fluidity. The assessment of other creative qualities could benefit from a modified analysis. Some modifications like test time, could improve the measure of flexibility and elaboration. The applicability of the CREA test may not be accompanied by quality to the extent of creative potential

Resultats. . Finalment es diagnos- tiquen d'abús sexual 10 pacients (35,7%). Conclusions.

Pores Formed by Baxα5 Relax to a Smaller Size and Keep at Equilibrium

AbstractPores made by amphipathic cationic peptides (e.g., antimicrobials and fragments of pore-forming proteins) are typically studied by examining the kinetics of vesicle leakage after peptide addition or obtaining structural measurements in reconstituted peptide-lipid systems. In the first case, the pores have been considered transient phenomena that allow the relaxation of the peptide-membrane system. In the second, they correspond to equilibrium structures at minimum free energy. Here we reconcile both approaches by investigating the pore activity of the α5 fragment from the proapoptotic protein Bax (Baxα5) before and after equilibrium of peptide/vesicle complexes. Quenching assays on suspensions of large unilamellar vesicles suggest that in the presence of Baxα5, the vesicles maintain a leaky state for hours under equilibrium conditions. We proved and analyzed stable pores on single giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) in detail by monitoring the entrance of dyes added at different times after incubation with the peptide. When the GUVs came in contact with Baxα5, leakage started stochastically, was delayed for various periods of time, and in the majority of cases proceeded rapidly to completion. After hours in the presence of the peptide, the same individual GUVs that refilled completely at first instance maintained a porated state, which could be observed in subsequent leak-in events for serially added dyes. However, these long-term pores were smaller in size than the initial equilibration pores. Stable pores were also detected in GUVs made in the presence of Baxα5. The latter pores can be considered equilibrium states and may correspond to structures measured previously in bilayer stacks. Although pore formation may occur as a kinetic process, equilibrium pores may also be functionally relevant structures, especially in highly regulated systems such as the apoptotic mitochondrial pores induced by Bax

Anxiety and the feeling of loneliness are emotional states that individuals may experience with greater or lesser intensity. Besides non-curative pharmacological therapies, music therapy has been settling in recent years as an effective therapy to ease these disorders preventing them from becoming chronic and lead to various pathologies. This quasi-experimental research study assesses 31 individuals (28 women and 3 men, with an average age of 45,6) that receive weekly one-hour music therapy sessions during 10 weeks. In the first and the last session of each period they self-administer the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and UCLA Loneliness Scale which allows to know their evolution during the treatment. The results show that a 74% and a 77% of the participants experienced a significant reduction of the initial disorders, obtaining on average, a reduction of 27% and 16% of the scores initially assigned. &nbsp

Salt and Water Stress Tolerance in Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea tricolor, Two Ornamentals with Invasive Potential

[EN] Invasive plants pose a significant threat to biodiversity, especially under the current unstable climatic conditions. This study aimed to test the salt and drought tolerance of two ornamental species of the genus Ipomoea during germination and vegetative growth. Germination tests were performed in the presence of increasing NaCl concentrations or iso-osmotic PEG concentrations¿to mimic the osmotic stress caused by drought. Both species showed great invasive potential because of their high seed germination percentages and rapid germination under control (distilled water) and salt stress conditions, up to 200 mM NaCl. Germination and early seedling development were more affected in the presence of PEG. Subsequently, water stress (complete withholding of irrigation) and salt stress (watering with 100 mM and 200 mM NaCl) treatments were applied to young plants for three weeks, when all plants were harvested, to determine several morphological and biochemical parameters. Both species were sensitive to water deficit but relatively resistant to salt stress. Their salt stress responses were similar, based mainly on the inhibition of Na+ and the activation of K+ transport from roots to leaves and the uptake and accumulation of Ca2+; however, I. tricolor showed a slightly higher tolerance to salt stress than I. purpurea. Although I. tricolor has only been locally reported as invasive and is generally considered a `low-risk¿ species, our results indicate that it may have an invasive potential even higher than I. purpurea, a recognised invasive weed, spread into areas with moderate salinity, affecting agricultural land or natural habitats of ecological interestD.-M.M. is supported by a pre-doctoral contract from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain and R.M. by a CDEIGENT (2018/2023) grant from Generalitat Valenciana.Mircea, DM.; Li, R.; Blasco Giménez, L.; Vicente, O.; Sestras, AF.; Sestras, RE.; Boscaiu, M....
