Using the chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin effect to probe the broadband signature in the optical transmission spectrum of HD 189733b
Transmission spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing exoplanetary
atmospheres. A successful ground-based observational method uses a differential
technique based on high-dispersion spectroscopy, but that only preserves narrow
features in transmission spectra. Here we use the chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin
(RM) effect to measure the Rayleigh-scattering slope in the transmission
spectrum of HD 189733b with the aim to show that it can be effectively used to
measure broadband transmission features. The amplitude of the RM effects
depends on the effective size of the planet, and in the case of an atmospheric
contribution therefore depends on the observed wavelength. We analysed archival
HARPS data of three transits of HD 189733b, covering a wavelength range of 400
to 700 nm. We measured the slope in the transmission spectrum of HD 189733b at
a significance. Assuming it is due to Rayleigh scattering and not
caused by stellar activity, it would correspond to an atmospheric temperature,
as set by the scale height, of , well in line with
previously obtained results. This shows that ground-based high-dispersion
spectral observations can be used to probe broad-band features in the
transmission spectra of extrasolar planets, by using the chromatic RM effect.
This method will be particularly interesting in conjunction with the new
echelle spectrograph ESPRESSO, which currently is under construction for ESOs
Very Large Telescope and will provide a gain in signal-to-noise ratio of about
a factor 4 compared to HARPS. This will be of great value because of the
limited and uncertain future of the Hubble Space Telescope and because the
future James Webb Space Telescope will not cover this wavelength regime.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on Astronomy and

Attribute-aware Diversification for Sequential Recommendations
Users prefer diverse recommendations over homogeneous ones. However, most
previous work on Sequential Recommenders does not consider diversity, and
strives for maximum accuracy, resulting in homogeneous recommendations. In this
paper, we consider both accuracy and diversity by presenting an Attribute-aware
Diversifying Sequential Recommender (ADSR). Specifically, ADSR utilizes
available attribute information when modeling a user's sequential behavior to
simultaneously learn the user's most likely item to interact with, and their
preference of attributes. Then, ADSR diversifies the recommended items based on
the predicted preference for certain attributes. Experiments on two benchmark
datasets demonstrate that ADSR can effectively provide diverse recommendations
while maintaining accuracy.Comment: AIIS 2020, as part of SIGIR 2020 https://aiis.newidea.fun
Search for an exosphere in sodium and calcium in the transmission spectrum of exoplanet 55 Cancri e
[Abridged] The aim of this work is to search for an absorption signal from
exospheric sodium (Na) and singly ionized calcium (Ca) in the optical
transmission spectrum of the hot rocky super-Earth 55 Cancri e. Although the
current best-fitting models to the planet mass and radius require a possible
atmospheric component, uncertainties in the radius exist, making it possible
that 55 Cancri e could be a hot rocky planet without an atmosphere. High
resolution (R110000) time-series spectra of five transits of 55 Cancri e,
obtained with three different telescopes (UVES/VLT, HARPS/ESO 3.6m &
HARPS-N/TNG) were analysed. Targeting the sodium D lines and the calcium H and
K lines, the potential planet exospheric signal was filtered out from the much
stronger stellar and telluric signals, making use of the change of the radial
component of the orbital velocity of the planet over the transit from -57 to
+57 km/sec. Combining all five transit data sets, we detect a signal
potentially associated with sodium in the planet exosphere at a statistical
significance level of 3. Combining the four HARPS transits that cover
the calcium H and K lines, we also find a potential signal from ionized calcium
(4.1 ). Interestingly, this latter signal originates from just one of
the transit measurements - with a 4.9 detection at this epoch.
Unfortunately, due to the low significance of the measured sodium signal and
the potentially variable Ca signal, we estimate the p-values of these
signals to be too high (corresponding to <4) to claim unambiguous
exospheric detections. By comparing the observed signals with artificial
signals injected early in the analysis, the absorption by Na and Ca are
estimated to be at a level of approximately 2.3 and 7.0 respectively, relative to the stellar spectrum.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, submission updated after English language

A single polyploidization event at the origin of the tetraploid genome of Coffea arabica is responsible for the extremely low genetic variation in wild and cultivated germplasm
The genome of the allotetraploid species Coffea arabica L. was sequenced to assemble independently the two component subgenomes (putatively deriving from C. canephora and C. eugenioides) and to perform a genome-wide analysis of the genetic diversity in cultivated coffee germplasm and in wild populations growing in the center of origin of the species. We assembled a total length of 1.536 Gbp, 444 Mb and 527 Mb of which were assigned to the canephora and eugenioides subgenomes, respectively, and predicted 46,562 gene models, 21,254 and 22,888 of which were assigned to the canephora and to the eugeniodes subgenome, respectively. Through a genome-wide SNP genotyping of 736 C. arabica accessions, we analyzed the genetic diversity in the species and its relationship with geographic distribution and historical records. We observed a weak population structure due to low-frequency derived alleles and highly negative values of Taijma's D, suggesting a recent and severe bottleneck, most likely resulting from a single event of polyploidization, not only for the cultivated germplasm but also for the entire species. This conclusion is strongly supported by forward simulations of mutation accumulation. However, PCA revealed a cline of genetic diversity reflecting a west-to-east geographical distribution from the center of origin in East Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. The extremely low levels of variation observed in the species, as a consequence of the polyploidization event, make the exploitation of diversity within the species for breeding purposes less interesting than in most crop species and stress the need for introgression of new variability from the diploid progenitors
Coronary artery mechanics induces human saphenous vein remodelling via recruitment of adventitial myofibroblast-like cells mediated by Thrombospondin-1
Rationale: Despite the preferred application of arterial conduits, the greater saphenous vein (SV) remains indispensable for coronary bypass grafting (CABG), especially in multi-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD). The objective of the present work was to address the role of mechanical forces in the activation of maladaptive vein bypass remodeling, a process determining progressive occlusion and recurrence of ischemic heart disease.
Methods: We employed a custom bioreactor to mimic the coronary shear and wall mechanics in human SV vascular conduits and reproduce experimentally the biomechanical conditions of coronary grafting and analyzed vein remodeling process by histology, histochemistry and immunofluorescence. We also subjected vein-derived cells to cyclic uniaxial mechanical stimulation in culture, followed by phenotypic and molecular characterization using RNA and proteomic methods. We finally validated our results in vitro and using a model of SV carotid interposition in pigs.
Results: Exposure to pulsatile flow determined a remodeling process of the vascular wall involving reduction in media thickness. Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) underwent conversion from contractile to synthetic phenotype. A time-dependent increase in proliferating cells expressing mesenchymal (CD44) and early SMC (SM22\u3b1) markers, apparently recruited from the SV adventitia, was observed especially in CABG-stimulated vessels. Mechanically stimulated SMCs underwent transition from contractile to synthetic phenotype. MALDI-TOF-based secretome analysis revealed a consistent release of Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), a matricellular protein involved in TGF-\u3b2-dependent signaling. TSP-1 had a direct chemotactic effect on SV adventitia resident progenitors (SVPs); this effects was inhibited by blocking TSP-1 receptor CD47. The involvement of TSP-1 in adventitial progenitor cells differentiation and graft intima hyperplasia was finally contextualized in the TGF-\u3b2-dependent pathway, and validated in a saphenous vein into carotid interposition pig model.
Conclusions: Our results provide the evidence of a matricellular mechanism involved in the human vein arterialization process controlled by alterations in tissue mechanics, and open the way to novel potential strategies to block VGD progression based on targeting cell mechanosensing-related effectors
A follow up study on the efficacy of metadoxine in the treatment of alcohol dependence
BACKGROUND: We carried out a three months follow-up study on the efficacy of metadoxine in a cohort of alcoholics admitted to the Alcohol misuse Long-term Treatment (ALT) Unit – University of Pisa (Italy). We analyzed the clinical data, psychometric tests and blood tests of 160 alcoholics on admission and after 3 months of treatment. We compared 58 pts treated with metadoxine (MET) with 102 pts who did not receive (NULL) any drug as an adjunct to the psycho-educational interventions provided by the ALT Unit. RESULTS: At follow-up, the patients in treatment with metadoxine showed a significant improvement in the rate of complete abstinence (44.8% vs. 21.6%; chi square: 8.45, df = 1, p < 0.0037). Furthermore, the number of drop-outs at three months of treatment was also significantly lower in the MET than in the NULL group (17% vs. 57%; chi square of 23.22, df = 1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings support the use of metadoxine in the management of alcohol dependence. However, randomized clinical trials are necessary to confirm and replicate them. This study raises the importance of identifying new pharmacological compounds effective on the outcome of alcoholism in order to help patients to best adhere to treatment programs and to prevent the development of mental and physical complications due to chronic and heavy use of alcohol
Reexamination of 6Li + p elastic scattering in inverse kinematics
Elastic-scattering measurements have been performed for the Li6+p system in inverse kinematics at the energies of 16, 20, 25, and 29 MeV. The heavy ejectile was detected by the large acceptance MAGNEX spectrometer at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania, Italy. The results are considered in a Jeukenne-Lejeune-Mahaux and a continuum discretized coupled-channel calculation framework
Height and timing of growth spurt during puberty in young people living with vertically acquired HIV in Europe and Thailand.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe growth during puberty in young people with vertically acquired HIV. DESIGN: Pooled data from 12 paediatric HIV cohorts in Europe and Thailand. METHODS: One thousand and ninety-four children initiating a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor or boosted protease inhibitor based regimen aged 1-10 years were included. Super Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) models described growth from age 8 years using three parameters (average height, timing and shape of the growth spurt), dependent on age and height-for-age z-score (HAZ) (WHO references) at antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. Multivariate regression explored characteristics associated with these three parameters. RESULTS: At ART initiation, median age and HAZ was 6.4 [interquartile range (IQR): 2.8, 9.0] years and -1.2 (IQR: -2.3 to -0.2), respectively. Median follow-up was 9.1 (IQR: 6.9, 11.4) years. In girls, older age and lower HAZ at ART initiation were independently associated with a growth spurt which occurred 0.41 (95% confidence interval 0.20-0.62) years later in children starting ART age 6 to 10 years compared with 1 to 2 years and 1.50 (1.21-1.78) years later in those starting with HAZ less than -3 compared with HAZ at least -1. Later growth spurts in girls resulted in continued height growth into later adolescence. In boys starting ART with HAZ less than -1, growth spurts were later in children starting ART in the oldest age group, but for HAZ at least -1, there was no association with age. Girls and boys who initiated ART with HAZ at least -1 maintained a similar height to the WHO reference mean. CONCLUSION: Stunting at ART initiation was associated with later growth spurts in girls. Children with HAZ at least -1 at ART initiation grew in height at the level expected in HIV negative children of a comparable age
