Bulk Universality and Related Properties of Hermitian Matrix Models
We give a new proof of universality properties in the bulk of spectrum of the
hermitian matrix models, assuming that the potential that determines the model
is globally and locally function (see Theorem \ref{t:U.t1}).
The proof as our previous proof in \cite{Pa-Sh:97} is based on the orthogonal
polynomial techniques but does not use asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials.
Rather, we obtain the -kernel as a unique solution of a certain non-linear
integro-differential equation that follows from the determinant formulas for
the correlation functions of the model. We also give a simplified and
strengthened version of paper \cite{BPS:95} on the existence and properties of
the limiting Normalized Counting Measure of eigenvalues. We use these results
in the proof of universality and we believe that they are of independent
interest
Higgs particle detection using jets
We study the possibility of detecting the Higgs boson in the intermediate
mass range via its two jet channel. We consider only Higgs bosons produced in
association with a pair. Both and are required to
decay semileptonically to reduce the QCD background. The signal is compared
with the main background, jets, after appropriate cuts. A
sizable signal above background is seen in our simulation at the parton level.
Use of the channel with decaying to is suggested for

Electron iduced light emission in photonic crystals
The interaction of a fast electron with a photonic crystal is studied by
solving the Maxwell equations exactly for the external field provided by the
electron in the presence of the crystal. The polarization currents and charges
produced by the passage of the electron give rise to the emission of the
so-called Smith-Purcell radiation. The emitted light probability is obtained by
integrating the Poynting vector over planes parallel to the crystal at a large
distance from the latter. Both reflected and transmitted light components are
analyzed and related to the photonic band structure of the crystal. Emission
spectra are compared with the energy loss probability and also with the

Adaptive Density Estimation on the Circle by Nearly-Tight Frames
This work is concerned with the study of asymptotic properties of
nonparametric density estimates in the framework of circular data. The
estimation procedure here applied is based on wavelet thresholding methods: the
wavelets used are the so-called Mexican needlets, which describe a nearly-tight
frame on the circle. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the -risk
function for these estimates, in particular its adaptivity, proving that its
rate of convergence is nearly optimal.Comment: 30 pages, 3 figure
Helminth communities of herons (Aves: Ardeidae) in southern Italy
The helminth communities of nine species of herons from southern Italy were studied and compared. Of 24 taxa found including seven digeneans, seven nematodes, six cestodes and four acanthocephalans, only five taxa were found in more than one heron species, and five of the 21 taxa that could be identified to species level were classified as 'heron specialists'. The total number of helminth species per heron species ranged from 1 in Botaurus stellaris to 9 in Ixobrychus minutus with infection levels generally low. A statistical comparison was carried out for herons with a sample size >. 5. At the infracommunity level, only I. minutus clearly differed from other heron species. Diversity parameters of heminth infracommunities did not significantly differ among heron species. Species richness ranged from just 0.3 to 2.3 helminth taxa per individual host, and the Brillouin index, from 0 to 0.3. Total helminth abundance did not exceed 40 worms per host except in a single case of Ardeola ralloides. Infracommunities clearly were dominated by single helminth species. The present study confirms a depauperate helminth community in herons from southern Italy. Comparison with data from Spain and the Czech Republic showed strong quantitative similarities with values obtained in the present study. Results also suggest that the composition of local helminth communities are strongly variable depending on geographical location as is demonstrated by comparison with data from other European areas. However, whether herons in Europe naturally host depauperate helminth communities or these communities are depauperate because of other factors is unknow
Quantum isometries and noncommutative spheres
We introduce and study two new examples of noncommutative spheres: the
half-liberated sphere, and the free sphere. Together with the usual sphere,
these two spheres have the property that the corresponding quantum isometry
group is "easy", in the representation theory sense. We present as well some
general comments on the axiomatization problem, and on the "untwisted" and
"non-easy" case.Comment: 16 page
On the relationship between -planar and -quasi planar graphs
A graph is -planar if it can be drawn in the plane such that no edge is crossed more than times. A graph is -quasi planar if it can be drawn in the plane with no pairwise crossing edges. The families of -planar and -quasi planar graphs have been widely studied in the literature, and several bounds have been proven on their edge density. Nonetheless, only trivial results are known about the relationship between these two graph families. In this paper we prove that, for , every -planar graph is -quasi planar
A compact minimal shadow boundary in Euclidean space is totally geodesic
We prove that a compact minimal shadow boundary of a hypersurface in Euclidean space is totally geodesic. We show that shadow boundaries detect principal directions and umbilical points of a hypersurface. As application we deduce that every shadow boundary of a compact strictly convex surface contains at least two principal direction
A novel method for the absolute fluorescence yield measurement by AIRFLY
One of the goals of the AIRFLY (AIR FLuorescence Yield) experiment is to
measure the absolute fluorescence yield induced by electrons in air to better
than 10% precision. We introduce a new technique for measurement of the
absolute fluorescence yield of the 337 nm line that has the advantage of
reducing the systematic uncertainty due to the detector calibration. The
principle is to compare the measured fluorescence yield to a well known process
- the Cerenkov emission. Preliminary measurements taken in the BFT (Beam Test
Facility) in Frascati, Italy with 350 MeV electrons are presented. Beam tests
in the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator at the Argonne National Laboratory, USA
with 14 MeV electrons have also shown that this technique can be applied at
