Engaging Anchor Institutions in the 21st Century: An Analysis of Strategies for Sustainable Economic Growth and Health Equity
This thesis seeks to understand how anchor institutions can operate as drivers us sustainable economic development and champions of health equity. Specifically, it seeks to identify a successful outline for strategies, programs, and policies to connect economic activity and health outcomes to the success of institutions. Anchor institutions can have a powerful impact on urban development initiatives. These institutions are magnets for economic development; they encourage urban reinvention, civic pride and are hubs of attraction for people outside of the physical boundaries of the city. Rooted in their community, there is an entrenched social responsibility and civic engagement. The fate of such institutions is closely tied to the health and wellbeing of the surrounding neighborhood and city. Fostering collaboration between silos of government (planning and public health), anchor institutions, and communities can be a highly effective solution for urban economic development and community sustainability. There is serious potential for collaborative innovation by government, educational or corporate institutions, and community organizations as a successful model for urban revitalization and healthy communities. New collaborative efforts combined with innovative urban policy strategies are needed if we are to make meaningful progress in the battle to enhance city life
Why Monitoring your Media Consumption during COVID-19 is Important
Are you spending more time consuming media (news, television, video games) than before COVID-19? Social distancing and stay-at-home orders have led to a surge in media consumption. This brief explains how too much media consumption (including the news) can affect your psychological and physiological wellbeing and provides strategies for monitoring your media consumption
Analysis of Plasminogen Genetic Variants in Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Dessa Sadovnick, A.; Alcina, Antonio; Fedetz, María; Matesanz, F.; Vilariño-Güell, Carles; Dessa Sadovnick, A. et. al.Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a prevalent neurological disease of complex etiology. Here, we describe the characterization of a multi-incident MS family that nominated a rare missense variant (p.G420D) in plasminogen (PLG) as a putative genetic risk factor for MS. Genotyping of PLG p.G420D (rs139071351) in 2160 MS patients, and 886 controls from Canada, identified 10 additional probands, two sporadic patients and one control with the variant. Segregation in families harboring the rs139071351 variant, identified p.G420D in 26 out of 30 family members diagnosed with MS, 14 unaffected parents, and 12 out of 30 family members not diagnosed with disease. Despite considerably reduced penetrance, linkage analysis supports cosegregation of PLG p.G420D and disease. Genotyping of PLG p.G420D in 14446 patients, and 8797 controls from Canada, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and Austria failed to identify significant association with disease (P = 0.117), despite an overall higher prevalence in patients (OR = 1.32; 95% CI = 0.93–1.87). To assess whether additional rare variants have an effect on MS risk, we sequenced PLG in 293 probands, and genotyped all rare variants in cases and controls. This analysis identified nine rare missense variants, and although three of them were exclusively observed in MS patients, segregation does not support pathogenicity. PLG is a plausible biological candidate for MS owing to its involvement in immune system response, blood-brain barrier permeability, and myelin degradation. Moreover, components of its activation cascade have been shown to present increased activity or expression in MS patients compared to controls; further studies are needed to clarify whether PLG is involved in MS susceptibility. We

Citizenship Education within the process of portuguese social democratization
The Right to Privacy and the Right to Use the Bathroom Consistent with One’s Gender Identity
During the autumn of 2013 the Swedish government announced that they intend to invest in expanding the Stockholm Metro. The expansion includes nine new stations; Sofia on Södermalm is one of them. The conditions of the site make the station to one of the deepest in the world. This proposal makes use of these conditions to connect the street level and the underground platform level and give the everyday experience of space, atmosphere, light and void a central position. The proposal comprises a hundred meters deep shaft, two elevator shafts, a public square park and train platform.

Bröstcancer drabbar dagligen ungefär 20 kvinnor i Sverige.

The landmass of Sweden is today dominated by agriculture and forestry, i.e., big areas of monocultures and interrupted life cycles. Natural environments are being reshaped to make way for countries growing cities. The prerequisites for biodiversity are impoverished and species extinction is a fact.
A large part of Sweden’s urban areas has access to a garden and therefore also are potential promoters of biodiversity. Private gardens are the platform that allows the most freedom and thus have the greatest possibility to contribute to the promotion of biodiversity. By providing the proper prerequisites, the private gardens can contribute to a variety of plant and animal habitats that ensures the promotion of biodiversity whilst at the same time maintain the already existing one
This study does not only cover possibilities to promote biodiversity, but it also incorporates how to do so without extensive maintenance needed. A literature study has been implemented with the ambition to create a document for garden owners to emanate from to promote biodiversity. Thereafter a case study was created to showcase how recommendations from the literature study can be applied in real life and garden designs. The literature study explains how private gardens can, with simple means, increase and preserve biodiversity. The paper also explains how this can be done with very little to no maintenance needed at all from the garden owners themselves. Element such as meadows, dead wood, and older trees, among others, are explained to showcase how they contribution to biodiversity and a reasoning behind why they require less maintenance. The results of this study can provide a basis on which to create gardens designs from and further urge the involvement and engagement of the private garden owner to promote biodiversity
Co-design and real citizen influence within Swedish landscape architecture
ansvar i medskapande designprocesser. Därtill har uppsatsen sökt förstå
landskapsarkitektens tillvägagångssätt i medskapande designprocesser, vilka
Co-design is a way to promote more inclusive planning processes in the urban
environment, where citizens are given the opportunity to influence community
development and contribute to socially sustainable cities. The aim is to increase
citizen influence in urban planning, but many planners and architects lack
guidelines on how to involve citizens, as there is no consensus on how to conduct
participatory design processes. They are often complex and time-consuming
processes that put demands on management in order to implement them
successfully.
Through their knowledge in planning and designing outdoor environments,
landscape architects have the opportunity to support citizens' influence in urban
planning. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine the role and
responsibility of the landscape architect in co-design processes. In addition, the
paper has sought to understand the landscape architect's approach within co-
design processes, the opportunities and challenges they face, and the skills
needed. Through a literature study and interviews with three landscape architects
who have experience of co-design, the paper has resulted in the following main
findings:
• The role of the landscape architect is to enable the participants' influence
during the design process, and the responsibility is to plan and implement
the process and deliver an end-result that corresponds to the wishes of the
client and the participants.
• The landscape architect's main competence lies in seeing the whole picture
and being within several scales and time frames simultaneously, as well as
understanding what is feasible. Social and pedagogical skills are also
highlighted as important for dealing with participants, listening to their
ideas and helping them to develop them.
• There is no general approach to the landscape architect's co-design
process: methods are adapted to the participants, the project framework
and the stage of the planning process. By exploring and analyzing the site
with the participants, an understanding of the site's challenges and
opportunities is built up.
• Time and budget are the biggest challenges, and they limit the participants'
influence, following the client's requirement that the process should be
time and resource efficient
