    Hadley circulation and precipitation changes control black shale deposition in the Late Jurassic Boreal Seaway

    New climate simulations using the HadCM3L model with a paleogeography of the Late Jurassic [155.5 Ma], and proxy-data corroborate that warm and wet tropical-like conditions reached as far north as the UK sector of the Jurassic Boreal Seaway [~35oN]. This is associated with a northern hemisphere Jurassic Hadley cell and an intensified subtropical jet which both extend significantly polewards than in the modern (July-September). Deposition of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation [KCF] occurred in the shallow, storm-dominated, epeiric Boreal Seaway. High resolution paleo-environmental proxy data from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation [KCF; ~155–150 Ma], UK are used to test for the role of tropical atmospheric circulation on meter-scale heterogeneities in black shale deposition. Proxy and model data show that the most organic-rich section [eudoxus to mid-hudlestoni zones] is characterised by a positive δ13Corg excursion and up to 37 wt% total organic carbon [%TOC]. Orbital-modulation of organic carbon burial primarily in the long eccentricity power band combined with a clear positive correlation between %TOC carbonate-free and the kaolinite/illite ratio supports peak organic carbon burial under the influence of very humid climate conditions, similar to the modern tropics. This re-interpretation of large-scale climate relationships, supported by independent modelling and geological data, has profound implications for atmospheric circulation patterns and processes affecting marine productivity and organic carbon burial further north along the Boreal Seaway, including the Arctic

    International audienceSites 482, 483, and 485 were drilled during Leg 65 on young oceanic crust south of the Tamayo Transform Fault. The Leg 65 drilling program was part of a multinational effort to study the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and complements sea bottom surveys conducted both in this area (Lewis, 1979; Cyamex Scientific Team and Pastouret, 1981) and farther south at 21 °N (Larson, 1971; Normark, 1976; Cyamex Scientific Team; Rise Project Group, 1980). These studies, which included deep-tow, Angus and submersible surveys, were recently complemented by sea-beam surveys conducted by the Jean Charcot on the Tamayo Fracture Zone and farther south along the EPR. They have led to a better understanding of the magmatic, tectonic, and sedimentary processes occurring on the East Pacific Rise between the Tamayo and Rivera fracture zones.The purpose of this chapter is to describe the metamorphic processes affecting Pliocene through Quaternary sediments found in contact, or inter layered, with basaltic units drilled during Leg 65 at the mouth of the Gulf of California

    International audienceAlteration products of basalts from the four holes drilled during Leg 81 were studied and found to be characterized by the widespread occurrence of trioctahedral clay minerals (Mg smectite to chlorite). In some cases zeolites (analcite, chabazite) are associated with the saponite. A more oxidizing stage is marked by a saponite-celadonite association, presenting the geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal processes. Later stages of alteration are represented by palagonitization and subaerial weathering at two sites. These different alteration processes of basalts from Leg 81 record the paleoenvironment during the first opening stages of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean in the Paleocene-Eocene periods

    Case study: Wind-assisted ship propulsion performance prediction, routing, and economic modelling

    In this paper, a vessel model for the performance of wind-assisted ships is combined with a routing tool to assess the fuel savings available from the installation of both one and two Flettner rotors when travelling along a Great Circle Route path. This is combined with an economic analysis to assess commercial viability for these hybrid concepts. The case study is performed in collaboration with DAMEN shipyards, who have provided a design for a wind-assist concept to sail in the Baltic Sea, that, since January 2015, is an Emission Control Area where a sulphur limit content of 0.1 % is enforced on the ship fuels. Results for this case study are presented in terms of fuel savings and payback period analysis, where the reference case is an identical ship sailing without wind propulsors. For the 5,150 dwt general cargo vessel travelling at a speed of 10 knots, average fuel savings of 2.99% were obtained in the Baltic Sea for the single Flettner scenario, and 6.11% for the double Flettner scenario.
