    Diseño e implementación del programa anual de conservación integrado para la gestión de los recursos de la facultad de ingeniería en mecánica y ciencias de la producción (fimcp), con enfoque en la mejora continua

    El objetivo es diseñar e implementar un programa anual de conservación integrado, con enfoque en la mejora continua, para la gestión e integración de los procesos de conservación de construcciones y equipos de los laboratorios de la FIMCP. “Conservación es toda actividad humana que, mediante la aplicación de los conocimientos científicos y técnicos, contribuye al óptimo aprovechamiento de los recursos“[2]. La Metodología de la Conservación consta de tres etapas. En la primera se identifican los problemas, recolectan los datos y se levanta la información; la segunda etapa incluye las herramientas para administrar la conservación, optimizar el presupuesto de manutención con el índice de clasificación para los gastos de conservación [3], jerarquizar el inventario, por medio de Pareto, para la mejor gestión de los recursos, minimizar los costos y la optimización de los intervalos de conservación y finalmente elaborar los planes contingentes. En la tercera etapa, se utilizan las herramientas de la ingeniería industrial como diagramas de flujo, estudio de tiempos y balanceo, rediseño de descripción del puesto y estudio de requerimientos de materiales. Por último, con el análisis de tendencias y financiero se estimó el ahorro (beneficio) para la FIMCP, y la inversión requerida para la ejecución de las mejoras y la viabilidad del proyecto. The objective is to design and to implement an integrated annual program of conservation, focus in the continuous improvement for the administration and integration of the processes of conservation of constructions and teams of the laboratories of the FIMCP. "Conservation is all human activity that, by means of the application of the scientific and technical knowledge, it contributes to the good use of the resources" [2] The Methodology of the Conservation consists of three stages. In the first one, to identify problems, to gather data and to lift the information; the second, include the tools to administer the conservation, to optimize the maintenance budget with the Ranking index for Maintenance Expenditure [3], to rank the inventory, by means of Pareto, for the best administration in the resources, to minimize the costs and the optimization of the conservation intervals, to elaborate the contingent plans. In the third stage, the tools of the industrial engineering are used as diagrams of flow, study of times and balancing, redesign of description of the position and study of requirements of materials. Lastly, with the analysis of tendencies and financial, it was considered the saving (benefit) for the FIMCP, and the investment required for the execution of the improvements and the viability of the project

    Concise review: cancer cells, cancer stem cells, and mesenchymal stem cells: influence in cancer development

    Tumors are composed of different types of cancer cells that contribute to tumor heterogeneity. Among these populations of cells, cancer stem cells (CSCs) play an important role in cancer initiation and progression. Like their stem cells counterpart, CSCs are also characterized by self-renewal and the capacity to differentiate. A particular population of CSCs is constituted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that differentiate into cells of mesodermal characteristics. Several studies have reported the potential pro-or anti-tumorigenic influence of MSCs on tumor initiation and progression. In fact, MSCs are recruited to the site of wound healing to repair damaged tissues, an event that is also associated with tumorigenesis. In other cases, resident or migrating MSCs can favor tumor angiogenesis and increase tumor aggressiveness. This interplay between MSCs and cancer cells is fundamental for cancerogenesis, progression, and metastasis. Therefore, an interesting topic is the relationship between cancer cells, CSCs, and MSCs, since contrasting reports about their respective influences have been reported. In this review, we discuss recent findings related to conflicting results on the influence of normal and CSCs in cancer development. The understanding of the role of MSCs in cancer is also important in cancer management

    Foreign Bodies Causing Asphyxiation in Children: The Experience of the Buenos Aires Paediatric ORL Clinic

    Inhalation or aspiration of a foreign body (FB) occurs relatively frequently in young children. The size, shape, type and site of arrest of the FB lead to variability in the clinical picture. The present study included data from 65 cases of FB inhalation presenting over 1 year at the Children's Hospital Gutierrez, Buenos Aires, Argentina, compared with information from four well-known published case series chosen as representative of other cultural and geographical backgrounds: the USA, Europe, North Africa (Egypt) and Asia (India). The mean age of children studied was 4.03 years. Injuries happened mainly at home (53 cases [81.54%]) and under adult supervision (59 cases [90.77%]). The most frequently inhaled FB was nuts, however, in contrast to previous reports, the majority of incidents involved inhalation of an inorganic, rather than an organic (food) FB. Complications included pneumonia (three cases), atelectasis (two cases) and pneumonitis (one case). No deaths were recorded. These data suggest that children play with objects inappropriate for their age, such as pins and nails, that adults may not be aware of the choking risks, and that more effort is required in educating caregivers about these risks

    Human adipose CD34+CD90+stem cells and collagen scaffold constructs grafted in vivo fabricate loose connective and adipose tissues

    Stem cell based therapies for the repair and regeneration of various tissues are of great interest for a high number of diseases. Adult stem cells, instead, are more available, abundant and harvested with minimally invasive procedures. In particular, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multi-potent progenitors, able to differentiate into bone, cartilage, and adipose tissues. Human adult adipose tissue seems to be the most abundant source of MSCs and, due to its easy accessibility; it is able to give a considerable amount of stem cells. In this study, we selected MSCs co-expressing CD34 and CD90 from adipose tissue. This stem cell population displayed higher proliferative capacity than CD34-CD90-cells and was able to differentiate in vitro into adipocytes (PPAR\u3b3+and adiponectin+) and endothelial cells (CD31+VEGF+Flk1+). In addition, in methylcellulose without VEGF, it formed a vascular network. The aim of this study was to investigate differentiation potential of human adipose CD34+/CD90+stem cells loaded onto commercial collagen sponges already used in clinical practice (Gingistat) both in vitro and in vivo. The results of this study clearly demonstrate that human adult adipose and loose connective tissues can be obtained in vivo, highlighting that CD34+/CD90 ASCs are extremely useful for regenerative medicine

    Efficacy of Percutaneous Transarterial Embolization in Patients with Spontaneous Abdominal Wall Hematoma and Comparison between Blind and Targeted Embolization Approaches

    Background: Endovascular treatment of abdominal wall hematomas (AWHs) has been increasingly used when conservative treatments were not sufficiently effective, and it is often preferred to surgical interventions. The aim of our study was to evaluate the safety and technical and clinical success of percutaneous transarterial treatment of AWH and to evaluate the efficacy of blind embolization compared to targeted embolization. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 43 patients (23 men and 20 females) with spontaneous AWH who underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and embolization, focusing on the presence of signs of bleeding at pre-procedural CT-Angiography (CTA) and at DSA. Furthermore, we divided patients into two groups depending on blind or targeted embolization approaches. Results: The mean age of the study population was 71 \ub1 12 years. CTA revealed signs of active bleeding in 31 patients (72%). DSA showed signs of active bleeding in 34 patients (79%). In nine patients (21%), blind embolization was performed. The overall technical success rate was 100%. Clinical success was achieved in 33 patients (77%), while 10 patients (23%) rebled within 96 h, and all of them were re-treated. No major peri-procedural complication was reported. The comparison between blind and targeted embolization showed no statistically significant differences for characteristics of groups and for clinical success rates (78% and 77%, respectively, 12p = 0.71). The technical success was 100% in both groups. Conclusions: Our study confirms that transarterial embolization is a safe and effective option for the treatment of spontaneous AWHs, and it suggests that the efficacy and safety of blind embolization is comparable to non-blind

    A Robust Implicit Optimal Order Formula for Direct Integration of Second Order Orbital Problems

    In this paper, a robust implicit formula of optimal order for direct integration of general second order orbital problems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is proposed. This method is considered capable avoiding the computational burden and wastage in computer time in connection with the method of reduction to first order systems. The integration algorithms and analysis of the basic properties are based on the adoption of Taylor’s expansion and Dahlquist stability model test. The resultant integration formula is of order ten and it is zero-stable, consistent, convergent and symmetric. The numerical implementation of the method to orbital and two-body problems demonstrates increased accuracy with the same computational effort on comparison with similar second order formulas.     Nuclear and chloroplast microsatellite diversity in Phaseolus vulgaris L. from Sardinia (Italy).

    Studies of the level and the structure of the genetic diversity of local varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris are of fundamental importance, both for the management of genetic resources and to improve our understanding of the pathways of dissemination and the evolution of this species in Europe. We have here characterized 73 local bean populations from Sardinia (Italy) using seed traits and molecular markers (phaseolins, nuSSRs and cpSSRs). American landraces and commercial varieties were also included for comparison. We see that: (a) the Sardinian material is distinct from the commercial varieties considered; (b) the variation in the seed traits is high and it mostly occurs among populations (95%); (c) compared to the American sample and the commercial varieties, the Sardinian collection has a low level of diversity; (d) the majority ([95%) of the Sardinian individuals belong to the Andean gene pool; (e) the Sardinian material shows a strong genetic structure, both for cpSSRs and nuSSRs; (f) the nuSSRs and cpSSRs concur in differentiating between gene pools, but a lack of congruence between nuclear and chloroplast has been observed within gene pools; and (g) there are three putative hybrids between the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools. Despite the relatively low level of diversity, which is probably due to a strong founder effect, the Sardinian landraces are worth being conserved and studied further because of their distinctiveness and because hybridization within and between the gene pools could generate variation that will be useful for breeding
