    Wavelet Helmholtz decomposition for weak lensing mass map reconstruction

    To derive the convergence field from the gravitational shear (gamma) of the background galaxy images, the classical methods require a convolution of the shear to be performed over the entire sky, usually expressed thanks to the Fast Fourier transform (FFT). However, it is not optimal for an imperfect geometry survey. Furthermore, FFT implicitly uses periodic conditions that introduce errors to the reconstruction. A method has been proposed that relies on computation of an intermediate field u that combines the derivatives of gamma and on convolution with a Green kernel. In this paper, we study the wavelet Helmholtz decomposition as a new approach to reconstructing the dark matter mass map. We show that a link exists between the Helmholtz decomposition and the E/B mode separation. We introduce a new wavelet construction, that has a property that gives us more flexibility in handling the border problem, and we propose a new method of reconstructing the dark matter mass map in the wavelet space. A set of experiments based on noise-free images illustrates that this Wavelet Helmholtz decomposition reconstructs the borders better than all other existing methods.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (16 pages, 12 figures

    Divergence-Free Motion Estimation

    International audienceThis paper describes an innovative approach to estimate motion from image observations of divergence-free flows. Unlike most state-of-the-art methods, which only minimize the divergence of the motion field, our approach utilizes the vorticity-velocity formalism in order to construct a motion field in the subspace of divergence free functions. A 4DVAR-like image assimilation method is used to generate an estimate of the vorticity field given image observations. Given that vorticity estimate, the motion is obtained solving the Poisson equation. Results are illustrated on synthetic image observations and compared to those obtained with state-of-the-art methods, in order to quantify the improvements brought by the presented approach. The method is then applied to ocean satellite data to demonstrate its performance on the real images

    Assessing the impact of a food supplement on the nutritional status and body composition of HIV-infected Zambian women on ARVs

    Background Zambia is a sub-Saharan country with one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV, currently estimated at 14%. Poor nutritional status due to both protein-energy and micronutrient malnutrition has worsened this situation. In an attempt to address this combined problem, the government has instigated a number of strategies, including the provision of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment coupled with the promotion of good nutrition. High-energy protein supplement (HEPS) is particularly promoted; however, the impact of this food supplement on the nutritional status of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) beyond weight gain has not been assessed. Techniques for the assessment of nutritional status utilising objective measures of body composition are not commonly available in Zambia. The aim of this study is therefore to assess the impact of a food supplement on nutritional status using a comprehensive anthropometric protocol including measures of skinfold thickness and circumferences, plus the criterion deuterium dilution technique to assess total body water (TBW) and derive fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM). Methods/Design This community-based controlled and longitudinal study aims to recruit 200 HIV-infected females commencing ARV treatment at two clinics in Lusaka, Zambia. Data will be collected at four time points: baseline, 4-month, 8-month and 12-month follow-up visits. Outcome measures to be assessed include body height and weight, body mass index (BMI), body composition, CD4, viral load and micronutrient status. Discussion This protocol describes a study that will provide a longitudinal assessment of the impact of a food supplement on the nutritional status of HIV-infected females initiating ARVs using a range of anthropometric and body composition assessment techniques
