    Caracterización fenotípica del ganado criollo en el Parque nacional Huascarán – Ancash

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic characteristics of the Creole cattle of the Huascarán National Park (PNH), Ancash, Peru through zoometric measurements and indexes of productive interest. The study was conducted in a population of Creole cattle in the Llanganuco zone of the PNH. Data were collected from 32 cows bovines. The zoometric measurements were head width (AC), head length (LC), chest girth (PT), body length (LCU), height withers (ALC) and height at the rump (ALG), anterior rump width (AAG), rear rump with (APG) and rump length (LG). Indexes related to meat ability were calculated: transversal pelvic index (IPT) and longitudinal pelvic index (IPL), and ethnological indexes: anamorphosis index (AI), corporal index (IC), pelvic index (PI) and proportionality index (IPR). The data were processed with the statistical program R. The colour and pattern of the coat were registered applying the nomenclature for Spanish bullfighting cattle. The zoomometric measurements showed a low CV (4.29 – 9.25), except for APG (14.75), reflecting morphological uniformity in the sample. The zoometric indices showed CV less than 10% (5.89 – 7.11), except for the AI ​​(16.28) and IC (11.5). As for the coat, a tendency towards simple colours (46.9%) with a predominance of black was observed. In general, the Creole bovine of the Quebrada de Llanganuco presents similar indexes with the Creole bovine from Ayacucho, Peru, classifying it as a short-bodied animal.El objetivo del presente estudio evaluar las características fenotípicas del ganado criollo del Parque Nacional Huascarán (PNH), Ancash, Perú, mediante la determinación de mediciones zoométricas e índices de interés productivo. El estudio se realizó en una población de bovinos criollos en la quebrada de Llanganuco del PNH. Se colectaron datos de 32 bovinos hembra adultos. Las medidas zoométricas tomadas fueron ancho (AC) y largo (LC) de cabeza, perímetro torácico (PT), largo de cuerpo (LCU), alzada a la cruz (ALC) y a la grupa (ALG), ancho anterior (AAG) y posterior de grupa (APG) y largo de grupa (LG). Se calcularon índices asociados a capacidad cárnica: índice pelviano transversal (IPT) e índice pelviano longitudinal (IPL), e índices etnológicos: índice de anamorfosis (IA), índice corporal (IC), índice pelviano (IP) e índice de proporcionalidad (IPR). Los datos fueron procesados con el programa estadístico R. Se registró el color y patrón del pelaje aplicando la nomenclatura para ganado de lidia. Las medidas zoométricas mostraron un bajo CV (4.29 – 9.25), excepto para APG (14.75), reflejando uniformidad morfológica en la muestra. Los índices zoométricos mostraron CV menores al 10% (5.89 – 7.11), excepto para el IA (16.28) e IC (11.5). En el pelaje se observó una tendencia hacia los colores simples (46.9%) con predominio del negro. En general, el bovino criollo de la Quebrada de Llanganuco presenta índices similares con el bovino criollo de Ayacucho, Perú, clasificándolo como un animal brevilíneo

    The miniJPAS survey: clusters and galaxy groups detection with AMICO

    Samples of galaxy clusters allow us to better understand the physics at play in galaxy formation and to constrain cosmological models once their mass, position (for clustering studies) and redshift are known. In this context, large optical data sets play a crucial role. We investigate the capabilities of the Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) in detecting and characterizing galaxy groups and clusters. We analyze the data of the miniJPAS survey, obtained with the JPAS-Pathfinder camera and covering 11 deg2^2 centered on the AEGIS field to the same depths and with the same 54 narrow band plus 2 broader band near-UV and near-IR filters anticipated for the full J-PAS survey. We use the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO) to detect and characterize groups and clusters of galaxies down to S/N=2.5S/N=2.5 in the redshift range 0.05<z<0.80.05<z<0.8. We detect 80, 30 and 11 systems with signal-to-noise ratio larger than 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5, respectively, down to 1013M/h\sim 10^{13}\,M_{\odot}/h. We derive mass-proxy scaling relations based on Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray data for the signal amplitude returned by AMICO, the intrinsic richness and a new proxy that incorporates the galaxies' stellar masses. The latter proxy is made possible thanks to the J-PAS filters and shows a smaller scatter with respect to the richness. We fully characterize the sample and use AMICO to derive a probabilistic membership association of galaxies to the detected groups that we test against spectroscopy. We further show how the narrow band filters of J-PAS provide a gain of up to 100% in signal-to-noise ratio in detection and an uncertainty on the redshift of clusters of only σz=0.0037(1+z)\sigma_z=0.0037(1+z) placing J-PAS in between broadband photometric and spectroscopic surveys.     Usefulness of bone turnover markers as predictors of mortality risk, disease progression and skeletal-related events appearance in patients with prostate cancer with bone metastases following treatment with zoledronic acid: TUGAMO study

    Owing to the limited validity of clinical data on the treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) and bone metastases, biochemical markers are a promising tool for predicting survival, disease progression and skeletal-related events (SREs) in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive capacity of biochemical markers of bone turnover for mortality risk, disease progression and SREs in patients with PCa and bone metastases undergoing treatment with zoledronic acid (ZA). Methods: This was an observational, prospective and multicenter study in which ninety-eight patients were included. Patients were treated with ZA (4mg every 4 weeks for 18 months). Data were collected at baseline and 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months after the beginning of treatment. Serum levels of bone alkaline phosphtase (BALP), aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type I (P1NP) and beta-isomer of carboxiterminal telopeptide of collagen I (b-CTX) were analysed at all points in the study. Data on disease progression, SREs development and survival were recorded. Results: Cox regression models with clinical data and bone markers showed that the levels of the three markers studied were predictive of survival time, with b-CTX being especially powerful, in which a lack of normalisation in visit 1 (3 months after the beginning of treatment) showed a 6.3-times more risk for death than in normalised patients. Levels of these markers were also predictive for SREs, although in this case BALP and P1NP proved to be better predictors. We did not find any relationship between bone markers and disease progression. Conclusion: In patients with PCa and bone metastases treated with ZA, b-CTX and P1NP can be considered suitable predictors for mortality risk, while BALP and P1NP are appropriate for SREs.     Dynamics of disease characteristics and clinical management of critically ill COVID-19 patients over the time course of the pandemic: an analysis of the prospective, international, multicentre RISC-19-ICU registry.

    BACKGROUND It remains elusive how the characteristics, the course of disease, the clinical management and the outcomes of critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) worldwide have changed over the course of the pandemic. METHODS Prospective, observational registry constituted by 90 ICUs across 22 countries worldwide including patients with a laboratory-confirmed, critical presentation of COVID-19 requiring advanced organ support. Hierarchical, generalized linear mixed-effect models accounting for hospital and country variability were employed to analyse the continuous evolution of the studied variables over the pandemic. RESULTS Four thousand forty-one patients were included from March 2020 to September 2021. Over this period, the age of the admitted patients (62 [95% CI 60-63] years vs 64 [62-66] years, p < 0.001) and the severity of organ dysfunction at ICU admission decreased (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment 8.2 [7.6-9.0] vs 5.8 [5.3-6.4], p < 0.001) and increased, while more female patients (26 [23-29]% vs 41 [35-48]%, p < 0.001) were admitted. The time span between symptom onset and hospitalization as well as ICU admission became longer later in the pandemic (6.7 [6.2-7.2| days vs 9.7 [8.9-10.5] days, p < 0.001). The PaO2/FiO2 at admission was lower (132 [123-141] mmHg vs 101 [91-113] mmHg, p < 0.001) but showed faster improvements over the initial 5 days of ICU stay in late 2021 compared to early 2020 (34 [20-48] mmHg vs 70 [41-100] mmHg, p = 0.05). The number of patients treated with steroids and tocilizumab increased, while the use of therapeutic anticoagulation presented an inverse U-shaped behaviour over the course of the pandemic. The proportion of patients treated with high-flow oxygen (5 [4-7]% vs 20 [14-29], p < 0.001) and non-invasive mechanical ventilation (14 [11-18]% vs 24 [17-33]%, p < 0.001) throughout the pandemic increased concomitant to a decrease in invasive mechanical ventilation (82 [76-86]% vs 74 [64-82]%, p < 0.001). The ICU mortality (23 [19-26]% vs 17 [12-25]%, p < 0.001) and length of stay (14 [13-16] days vs 11 [10-13] days, p < 0.001) decreased over 19 months of the pandemic. CONCLUSION Characteristics and disease course of critically ill COVID-19 patients have continuously evolved, concomitant to the clinical management, throughout the pandemic leading to a younger, less severely ill ICU population with distinctly different clinical, pulmonary and inflammatory presentations than at the onset of the pandemic

    El V Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2019, realizado del 6 al 8 de febrero de 2019 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, ofreció a la comunidad académica nacional e internacional una plataforma de comunicación unificada, dirigida a cubrir los problemas teóricos y prácticos de mayor impacto en la sociedad moderna desde la ingeniería. En esta edición, dedicada a los 25 años de vida de la UPS, los ejes temáticos estuvieron relacionados con la aplicación de la ciencia, el desarrollo tecnológico y la innovación en cinco pilares fundamentales de nuestra sociedad: la industria, la movilidad, la sostenibilidad ambiental, la información y las telecomunicaciones. El comité científico estuvo conformado formado por 48 investigadores procedentes de diez países: España, Reino Unido, Italia, Bélgica, México, Venezuela, Colombia, Brasil, Estados Unidos y Ecuador. Fueron recibidas un centenar de contribuciones, de las cuales 39 fueron aprobadas en forma de ponencias y 15 en formato poster. Estas contribuciones fueron presentadas de forma oral ante toda la comunidad académica que se dio cita en el Congreso, quienes desde el aula magna, el auditorio y la sala de usos múltiples de la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, cumplieron respetuosamente la responsabilidad de representar a toda la sociedad en la revisión, aceptación y validación del conocimiento nuevo que fue presentado en cada exposición por los investigadores. Paralelo a las sesiones técnicas, el Congreso contó con espacios de presentación de posters científicos y cinco workshops en temáticas de vanguardia que cautivaron la atención de nuestros docentes y estudiantes. También en el marco del evento se impartieron un total de ocho conferencias magistrales en temas tan actuales como la gestión del conocimiento en la universidad-ecosistema, los retos y oportunidades de la industria 4.0, los avances de la investigación básica y aplicada en mecatrónica para el estudio de robots de nueva generación, la optimización en ingeniería con técnicas multi-objetivo, el desarrollo de las redes avanzadas en Latinoamérica y los mundos, la contaminación del aire debido al tránsito vehicular, el radón y los riesgos que representa este gas radiactivo para la salud humana, entre otros

    Plant diversity patterns in neotropical dry forests and their conservation implications

The final version is available from American Association for the Advancement of Science via the DOI in this record.Seasonally dry tropical forests are distributed across Latin America and the Caribbean and are highly threatened, with less than 10% of their original extent remaining in many countries. Using 835 inventories covering 4660 species of woody plants, we show marked floristic turnover among inventories and regions, which may be higher than in other neotropical biomes, such as savanna. Such high floristic turnover indicates that numerous conservation areas across many countries will be needed to protect the full diversity of tropical dry forests.     Plan de manejo para los residuos sólidos metálicos en la zona industrial de la localidad de Puente Aranda

    La investigación para la elaboración de un Plan de Manejo de Residuos Metálicos en la Zona Industrial de Puente Aranda, se realizó sobre la base de que el carácter de los establecimientos de la zona implica la generación en mayor cantidad y con mayor frecuencia de residuos metálicos que en otros sectores de la ciudad, por lo que es factible aprovechar este aspecto para desarrollar un manejo encaminado al reciclaje a la vez que se minimiza su evacuación a los rellenos sanitarios de la ciudad, favoreciendo la protección medio ambiental. La investigación realizada se fundamenta en el diagnóstico elaborado a partir de la información que se obtuvo mediante encuestas, aplicadas en fábricas, talleres de mecánica y bodegas. Entre los resultados de dicho diagnóstico se encontró que los residuos sólidos metálicos comprenden el 29,18% del total de residuos que se generan; entre estos el 45,3% son aceros y otro 45,3% corresponde a otros ferrosos. La mayor parte de los residuos que se generan provienen de los procesos de comercialización de productos, con un 41,5% del total. En un 95% aproximadamente, de los establecimiento encuestados; no se cuenta con programas de manejo de los residuos sólidos; sin embargo, cerca del 98% coincide en que si es necesario y adecuado desarrollar algún plan de manejo de sus residuos. Con base en el diagnóstico efectuado se presentó el Plan de Manejo; que es un conjunto de propuestas integradas, que pretende minimizar la eliminación de residuos sólidos desarrollando procesos de capacitación y concientización sobre los beneficios y procedimientos que implica dicho Plan, incluyendo acciones en cuanto a reducción en la fuente, clasificación en la fuente, transporte, acopio, procesamiento y disposición final. Se prevé entre las propuestas la creación de una empresa asociativa, de parte de las empresas del sector, para comprometerse más con el proceso, beneficiarse de él y facilitar el desarrollo operativo del Plan
