AbstractAbstract: Plaster of Paris is a binding material being used in masonry as a plaster finish coat. Despite being economical, having good performance as and ease with wich it is applied in building, its use is limited to indoors. Some attempts has been made to improve its performance in external environment. In that sense, researches advance in the attempt at using several admixtures like epoxy resins, polymers, cements slags, waterproofing materials among other things. The objective of this thesis is to assess the performance of certain mixtures of rendering material containing plaster of Paris, slag cement and condensed silica fume when applied in the internal and external plaster finish coat. The macroscopic properties of the mixtures were analyzed through physical and chemical tests and also in SEM. Mixtures were applied on coatings of brick and mortar and visually inspected within five years. Bond strengths of the mixtures were measured, both in internal and external walls. Results showed compatibility between plaster of Paris and slag cement and that presence of condensed silica fume in the mixture reduced the formation of etringite, especially in the external coatings. The addition of Portland blastfurnace slag cement reduced the abrasion and the loss of mass, even in older ages. Therefore, due to the high cost of some admixtures, and the difficulty in working with other kinds of admixtures in the construction sites, the mentioned additions to the plaster rendering allow a mechanical strength improvement, thus resulting in low cost and good workability of the plaster finish coat.

This research project aims to analyze the use of daily gestures in the play Kontakthof (1978), choreographed by Pina Bausch in a first version from year 1978, conceived and performed by the Tanztheater Wuppertal dancers, in a second version from year 2000, held by ladies and gentlemen over 65 and residents in Wuppertal, and a third and final version, from 2008, held by teenagers, Wuppertal?s public school students. We identified three ways to use daily gesture in Kontakthof: realistic, dislocated and stylized. However, these three ways of using the gesture may have different interpretations depending on the generation that runs them. Thus, we made a study case of Kontakthof through generations, which consist in an analysis of selected scenes, observing how the same scene can have different meanings, depending on the cast who plays it. As a practical result of the research we came to the scenic experiment Antes que seja tarde (Before it's too late) a poetic synthesis of the material raised in theoretical researchMestradoArtes da CenaMestra em Artes da Cen

The growing use of plaster in the constructions has been a practical and economical alternative. The plaster has the advantage of to harden quickly and to provide a fme fmish, but limited to the internal use due to its water sensibility. In other hand, Portland cement is a hydraulic binder and have an excellent behaviour in water. Besides that, silica fume improves its properties. So, the aim of this work was to observe the properties of pastes made from the mixture of plaster-Portland cement-silica fume in concrete block walls. These pastes were submitted to two kinds of expositions: internal and external walls. These pastes were submitted to several tests: physical, chemical and physico-chemical. From these results it was observed that the addition of silica fume diminished the ettringite formation in the walls subjected to humidity. The plaster-Portland cement had the abrasion resistance improved and the weight loss was also diminished. The panels are until now with the same aspects-from the fIrst day of the paste application and there were not observed cracks on them. In this way, its is possible to conclude that the mixture of plaster and Portland cement can be a realityMestradoEdificaçõesMestre em Engenharia Civi

Risk factors for Haemophilus influenzae and pneumococcal respiratory tract colonization in CVID

To the Editor: Disease-specific studies focused on infection risk in common variable immune deficiencies (CVIDs) are needed to define strategies for controlling respiratory infections predominantly due to bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae.1 Little information is available on the rate of airway bacterial carriage and its consequence in hypogammaglobulinemias. Despite IgG replacement, recurrent respiratory infections are common in CVID, possibly leading to chronic lung damage2 and poor quality of life.3 Thus, patients are often prescribed antibiotics and/or long-term antimicrobial prophylactic regimens. Several regimens are used including rotation or periodically changing antibiotics.4 However, antibiotics influence antimicrobial resistance among airway microbiota. In a recent meta-analysis on patients with chronic lung diseases, 30% of S pneumoniae showed resistance to macrolides.

This article intends to contextualize the work of the German choreographer and dancer, Pina Bausch (1940-2009), a world reference of the Tanztheater. We have analyse the use of daily gesture in Bausch´s work Kontakthof. The piece was created in 1978 with the Tanztheater Wuppertal dancers and its construction revolved around the human relations conflicts, such as power relations, affection, submission, discoveries and exposures. The analysis of the daily gestures uses is carried out in the piece that in the year 2000 had a new version with ladies and gentlemen over 65 years, and in 2008 with Wuppertal´s public schools students, both cast without any professional dance experience. This article has the theoretical support of authors such as Stanislavski, Brecht and Gil, in dialogue with others Bausch’s works.O presente artigo pretende contextualizar o trabalho da coreógrafa e bailarina alemã, Pina Bausch (1940-2009), referência mundial do Tanztheater[1]. INTRODUCTION: Conventional haemorrhoidectomy (CH) is well known to cause significant post-operative pain and delayed return to daily activities. Both surgical wounds and sphincterial apparatus spasms are likely responsible for the pain. In this study, we evaluated the role of glyceryl trinitrate ointment (GTN) in reducing post-operative pain, ameliorating wound healing and recovery after CH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 01/08 and 12/11, 203 patients with symptomatic haemorrhoids were enrolled in the study and received (103 patients) or not (100 patients) 0.4 % GTN ointment for 6 weeks after surgery. Pain was assessed using a 10-cm linear visual analogue scale (VAS). Data on post-operative pain, wound secretion and bleeding, return to normal activities and complications were recorded. Data were analysed using Fisher's exact and Mann-Whitney tests. RESULTS: GTN-treated group experienced significantly less pain during the first week after surgery (p < 0.0001). This difference was more evident starting from post-operative day 4 (p < 0.0001). A significant higher percentage of untreated patients experienced severe pain (mean VAS score > 7) (10 % vs 31 %). There were significant differences in terms of secretion time (p = 0.0052) and bleeding time (p = 0.02) in favor of GTN. In addition, the duration of itching was less in the GTN group (p = 0.0145). Patients treated with GTN were able to an early return to daily activities compared to untreated (p < 0.0001). Fifteen GTN-treated patients (14.6 %) discontinued the application because of local discomfort and headache. CONCLUSIONS: GTN ointment enhances significantly post-operative recovery, reducing pain in terms of duration and intensity. This effect might be secondary to a faster wound healing expressed by reduced secretion, bleeding and itching time

Protocol for the unclassified primary antibody deficiency (unPAD) study:Characterization and classification of patients using the ESID online registry

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Primary antibody deficiencies (PADs) without an identified monogenetic origin form the largest and most heterogeneous group of primary immunodeficiencies. These patients often remain undiagnosed for years and many present to medical attention in adulthood after several infections risking structural complications. Not much is known about their treatment, comorbidities, or prognosis, nor whether the various immunological forms (decreased total IgG, IgG subclass(es), IgM, IgA, specific antibody responses, alone or in combination(s)) should be considered as separate, clearly definable subgroups. The unclassified primary antibody deficiency (unPAD) study aims to describe in detail all PAD patients without an identified specific monogenetic defect regarding their demographical, clinical, and immunological characteristics at presentation and during follow-up. In constructing these patterns, the unPAD study aims to reduce the number of missed and unidentified PAD patients in the future. In addition, this study will focus on subclassifying unPAD to support the identification of patients at higher risk for infection or immune dysregulation related complications, enabling the development of personalized follow-up and treatment plans. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We present a protocol for a multicenter observational cohort study using the ESID online Registry. Patients of all ages who have given informed consent for participation in the ESID online Registry and fulfill the ESID Clinical Working Definitions for ‘unclassified antibody deficiency’, ‘deficiency of specific IgG’, ‘IgA with IgG subclass deficiency’, ‘isolated IgG subclass deficiency’, ‘selective IgM deficiency’, ‘selective IgA deficiency’ or ‘common variable immunodeficiency’ will be included. For all patients, basic characteristics can be registered at first registration and yearly thereafter in level 1 forms. Detailed characteristics of the patients can be registered in level 2 forms. Consecutive follow-up forms can be added indefinitely. To ensure the quality of the collected data, all data will be fully monitored before they are exported from the ESID online Registry for analysis. Outcomes will be the clinical and immunological characteristics of unPAD at presentation and during follow-up. Subgroup analyses will be made based on demographical, clinical and immunological characteristics

Tumors are metabolic entities wherein cancer cells adapt their metabolism to their oncogenic agenda and microenvironmental influences. Metabolically different cancer cell subpopulations collaborate to optimize nutrient delivery with respect to immediate bioenergetic and biosynthetic needs. They can also metabolically exploit host cells. These metabolic networks are directly linked with cancer progression, treatment, resistance, and relapse. Conversely, metabolic alterations in cancer are exploited for anticancer therapy, imaging, and stratification for personalized treatments. These topics were addressed at the 4th annual meeting of the International Society of Cancer Metabolism (ISCaM) in Bertinoro, Italy, on 19-21 October 2017
