    Mild ultrasound-assisted synthesis of TiO2 supported on magnetic nanocomposites for selective photo-oxidation of benzyl alcohol

    A simple and effective ultrasound-assisted wet impregnation method was developed for the preparation of magnetically separable TiO2/maghemite-silica photo-active nanocomposites. The resulting nanomaterials were characterized by several techniques and subsequently tested for their photocatalytic activities in the liquid phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol. An unprecedented selectivity in organic media (90% in acetonitrile) towards benzaldehyde was achieved at a benzyl alcohol conversion of ca. 50%, being remarkably superior in terms of activity to any other supported transition metal catalysts reported to date as well as commercial titania Evonik P-25 photocatalyst

    Asociación entre salud mental y actitudes ante el confinamiento durante la pandemia COVID-19 en hospitales de Lima y Callao

    Objetivo: Identificar la asociación entre la depresión, ansiedad y estrés con las actitudes ante el confinamiento durante la pandemia por COVID-19 en personal de salud del Hospital Nacional Daniel Alcides Carrión y Hospital Militar Central mediante el empleo de la escala DASS-21. Materiales y métodos: Estudio transversal, observacional y analítico, participaron personal de salud que trabajó en áreas Covid durante la pandemia COVID-19. Se empleó la escala Dass-21 para medir la existencia de estados emocionales de depresión, ansiedad y estrés, y la escala de actitudes adaptada frente al confinamiento para COVID-19. Resultados: Se incluyó 124 participantes, 54% (n=67) de sexo femenino, con una mediana de edad de 34.5 años [Ri]= 16.5 que reportaron una mediana de años de experiencia de 6 (Ri = 17). La mediana del puntaje de la Escala Dass-21 para ansiedad fue de 2 (Ri= 5), la mediana del puntaje de Dass-21 para depresión fue de 1 (Ri=4.5) y la mediana del puntaje de la Escala Dass-21 para estrés fue de 4 (Ri=5).  El análisis bivariado entre los valores de los parámetros de la Escala Dass-21 y las demás covariables identificó que el grado de instrucción tenía una relación significativa con la subescala de depresión, ansiedad y estrés. Conclusión: Se encontró asociación entre los parámetros afectivos de la escala sobre actitudes ante el confinamiento y las tres subescalas de DASS-21

    Global Antifungal Profile Optimization of Chlorophenyl Derivatives against Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

    Twenty-two aromatic derivatives bearing a chlorine atom and a different chain in the para or meta position were prepared and evaluated for their in vitro antifungal activity against the phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The results showed that maximum inhibition of the growth of these fungi was exhibited for enantiomers S and R of 1-(40-chlorophenyl)- 2-phenylethanol (3 and 4). Furthermore, their antifungal activity showed a clear structure-activity relationship (SAR) trend confirming the importance of the benzyl hydroxyl group in the inhibitory mechanism of the compounds studied. Additionally, a multiobjective optimization study of the global antifungal profile of chlorophenyl derivatives was conducted in order to establish a rational strategy for the filtering of new fungicide candidates from combinatorial libraries.     Diagnostic potential of western blot analysis of sera from dogs with Leishmaniasis in endemic areas and significance of the pattern.

    Serum samples collected from 237 dogs in Catalonia (northeastern Spain) were screened by Western blot analysis to detect the presence of antibodies specific to different Leishmania infantum polypeptide fractions. Leishmaniasis was confirmed in 72 of these dogs by direct examination and/or culture. Another 165 animals from the Priorat region were studied periodically for 2-8 years between 1987 and 1995, giving a total of 565 determinations. A control group of 93 dogs from nonendemic areas was also studied. Sera from dogs with leishmaniasis recognized antigens with molecular weights ranging from 12 to 85 kD. The most sensitive antigens were those of 70, 65, 46, 30, 28, 14, and 12 kD, which were recognized by 75%, 75%, 78%, 75%, 81%, 79%, and 75%, respectively, of the sera from dogs with positive parasitologic examination results. Antigens of 70 and 65 kD were also recognized by two dogs from nonendemic areas. Antigens of 14 and 12 kD were the first to be recognized by sera of asymptomatic dogs with titers less than the cut-off value of the dot-ELISA that increased during the longitudinal study, and the presence of antibodies specific for these fractions was observed for up to six years before seroconversion observed by dot-ELISA. These antibodies were also the first to disappear in dogs in which the disease was self-limited. The study corroborates the high sensitivity and specificity of Western blots in the diagnosis of canine leishmaniasis when the bands of low molecular weight (less than 46 kD) are considered, and indicates that fractions of 14 and 12 kD are useful in detecting early forms of the disease

    Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis and Other Intestinal Parasite Infections in School Children in a Rural Area of Angola: A Cross-Sectional Study

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of S. stercoralis and other intestinal parasites and identify the risk factors for infection with S. stercoralis in a rural area of Angola. A cross-sectional study was conducted in school-age children (SAC) in Cubal, Angola. A questionnaire collecting clinical and epidemiological variables was used, and two stool samples were collected. A concentration technique (Ritchie) and a technique for detection of larvae migration (Baermann) were performed. Of 230 SAC, 56.1% were female and the mean age was 9.3 years (SD 2.45). Severe malnutrition, according to body mass index (BMI)-for-age, was observed in 20.4% of the SAC, and anemia was found in 59.6%. Strongyloides stercoralis was observed in 28 of the 230 (12.8%) SAC. Eggs of other helminths were observed in 51 (22.2%) students: Hymenolepis spp. in 27 students (11.7%), hookworm in 14 (6.1%), Schistosoma haematobium in four (1.7%), Enterobius vermicularis in four (1.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides in three (1.3%), Taenia spp. in two (0.9%), and Fasciola hepatica in one (0.4%). Protozoa were observed in 17 (7.4%) students. Detection of S. stercoralis was higher using the Baermann technique versus using formol-ether (11.3 vs. 3%). Overall prevalence of S. stercoralis in the school population of 16 studied schools in the municipal area of Cubal was greater than 10%. This fact must be considered when designing deworming mass campaigns. The use of specific tests in larvae detection is needed to avoid overlooking this parasite

    MMP-12, Secreted by Pro-Inflammatory Macrophages, Targets Endoglin in Human Macrophages and Endothelial Cells

    Upon inflammation, monocyte-derived macrophages (MF) infiltrate blood vessels to regulate several processes involved in vascular pathophysiology. However, little is known about the mediators involved. Macrophage polarization is crucial for a fast and e cient initial response (GM-MF) and a good resolution (M-MF) of the inflammatory process. The functional activity of polarized MF is exerted mainly through their secretome, which can target other cell types, including endothelial cells. Endoglin (CD105) is a cell surface receptor expressed by endothelial cells and MF that is markedly upregulated in inflammation and critically involved in angiogenesis. In addition, a soluble form of endoglin with anti-angiogenic activity has been described in inflammation-associated pathologies. The aim of this work was to identify components of the MF secretome involved in the shedding of soluble endoglin. We find that the GM-MF secretome contains metalloprotease 12 (MMP-12), a GM-MF specific marker that may account for the anti-angiogenic activity of the GM-MF secretome. Cell surface endoglin is present in both GM-MF and M-MF, but soluble endoglin is only detected in GM-MF culture supernatants. Moreover, MMP-12 is responsible for the shedding of soluble endoglin in vitro and in vivo by targeting membrane-bound endoglin in both MF and endothelial cells. These data demonstrate a direct correlation between GM-MF polarization, MMP-12, and soluble endoglin expression and function.     Exploring the components, asymmetry and distribution of relationship quality in wild Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus)

    Social relationships between group members are a key feature of many animal societies. The quality of social relationships has been described by three main components: value, compatibility and security, based on the benefits, tenure and stability of social exchanges. We aimed to analyse whether this three component structure could be used to describe the quality of social relationships in wild Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus). Moreover, we examined whether relationship quality was affected by the sex, age and rank differences between social partners, and investigated the asymmetric nature of social relationships. We collected over 1,900 hours of focal data on seven behavioural variables measuring relationship quality, and used principal component analysis to investigate how these variables clustered together. We found that relationship quality in wild Barbary macaques can be described by a three component structure that represents the value, compatibility and security of a relationship. Female-female dyads had more valuable relationships and same-age dyads more compatible relationships than any other dyad. Rank difference had no effect on the quality of a social relationship. Finally, we found a high degree of asymmetry in how members of a dyad exchange social behaviour. We argue that the asymmetry of social relationships should be taken into account when exploring the pattern and function of social behaviour in animal societies

    Beyond property: Rural politics and land-use change in the Colombian sugarcane landscape

    Analysing the sugarcane landscape in the flat valley of the Cauca River (Colombia) reveals that agricultural industrialization in the region required the concentration of land use by regional industrialists and the corresponding exclusion of landowners and poor peasants from territorial decision-making processes. The analytical lens used in this article, based on the use and control over land and land-based natural commons, allows for the characterization of three periods in a non-linear process of articulation and dispute between poor peasant and capitalist agents in the expansion of the sugarcane monoculture during the 20th century.
