    Object Pose Detection to Enable 3D Interaction from 2D Equirectangular Images in Mixed Reality Educational Settings

    In this paper, we address the challenge of estimating the 6DoF pose of objects in 2D equirectangular images. This solution allows the transition to the objects’ 3D model from their current pose. In particular, it finds application in the educational use of 360° videos, where it enhances the learning experience of students by making it more engaging and immersive due to the possible interaction with 3D virtual models. We developed a general approach usable for any object and shape. The only requirement is to have an accurate CAD model, even without textures of the item, whose pose must be estimated. The developed pipeline has two main steps: vehicle segmentation from the image background and estimation of the vehicle pose. To accomplish the first task, we used deep learning methods, while for the second, we developed a 360° camera simulator in Unity to generate synthetic equirectangular images used for comparison. We conducted our tests using a miniature truck model whose CAD was at our disposal. The developed algorithm was tested using a metrological analysis applied to real data. The results showed a mean difference of 1.5° with a standard deviation of 1° from the ground truth data for rotations, and 1.4 cm with a standard deviation of 1.5 cm for translations over a research range of ±20° and ±20 cm, respectively

    Tecniche integrate di Remote Sensing e GIS a supporto della stima del potenziale fotovoltaico su tetti in aree urbane

    Le ultime linee guida approvate dal Governo Italiano per sostenere finanziariamente il fotovoltaico (PV) e lo sviluppo della produzione di energia solare (Quarto e Quinto Conto Energia, Gennaio 2012 e succ.), al fine di evitare il consumo di suolo in aree agricole o naturali, comprendono indicazioni specifiche che rendono più vantaggiosa l’installazione d’impianti su tetti o superfici di copertura di edifici. In questo contesto diventa importante, per una adeguata attività di pianificazione e monitoraggio del PV, la mappatura estensiva delle superfici a disposizione, coincidenti con i tetti e l’accurata valutazione del loro potenziale fotovoltaico. Dal momento che tali coperture si trovano soprattutto nelle aree urbane o industriali, in cui fattori come eterogeneità tridimensionale, albedo, torbidità atmosferica ed ombreggiamenti reciproci influenzano in modo significativo l’irraggiamento solare locale, è necessario tenere conto adeguatamente di questi elementi mediante una mappatura GIS tridimensionale ed avanzati strumenti di modellazione, in modo da stimare efficacemente la radianza solare disponibile a livello dei tetti. La metodologia implementata, basata su tecniche di telerilevamento e GIS, ha permesso di valutare e mappare la radiazione solare globale su tutti i tetti presenti nel territorio del Comune di Avellino. Partendo da dati di tipo LIDAR, è stato ottenuto in primo luogo il DSM di tutta l’area di interesse (~ 42 Km2), quindi il modello tridimensionale di ogni edificio da cui sono stati derivati i parametri geometrici di tutte le coperture. Per tenere conto della trasparenza atmosferica e della percentuale di radiazione solare (diffusa/diretta) sulle superfici di interesse, sono stati utilizzati i dati e gli strumenti applicativi presenti sul sito web PVGIS, sviluppato dalla UE. L’elaborazione finale, basata sull’utilizzo di strumenti GIS anche di tipo open source, ha permesso di ottenere le mappe di radianza solare e di potenziale PV per tutti i tetti presenti nell’area di studio.The last guidelines approved by Italian government to financially support the solar Photovoltaic (PV) Energy production development (Fourth and Fifth feed-in-scheme, January 2012 and later), in order to avoid soil consumption in agricultural or naturals areas, include specific indications for more advantageously funding the installations exploiting roofs or covers surfaces. In this context it becomes important, for a suitable PV planning and monitoring, the extensive mapping of the available surfaces extent, usually corresponding to covers and properly assessing their quality in term of PV potential. Since the covers are mainly located in urban or industrial areas, whose 3D heterogeneity, albedo, atmospheric turbidity and casting shadows significantly influence the local solar irradiance, it is necessary to suitably account for these distributed factors by means of GIS mapping and advanced modeling tools in order to provide realistic estimates of solar available radiance at roofs level. The implemented methodology, based on remote sensing techniques, has allowed to estimate and map the global solar radiance over all the roofs within Avellino municipality. Starting from LIDAR data, DSM of the entire area of interest (~42 Km2) has been firstly obtained; then the 3D model of each building and related cover has been derived. To account for the atmospheric transparency and the related time-dependent diffuse/direct radiation percentage on the area, data and tools from EU PVGIS web application have been also used. The final processing to obtain the solar radiance maps has been carried out using specific software modules available within commercial and open-source GIS packages

    Omnidirectional camera pose estimation and projective texture mapping for photorealistic 3D virtual reality experiences

    Modern applications in virtual reality require a high level of fruition of the environment as if it was real. In applications that have to deal with real scenarios, it is important to acquire both its three-dimensional (3D) structure and details to enable the users to achieve good immersive experiences. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a method to obtain a mesh with high quality texture combining a raw 3D mesh model of the environment and 360 ° images. The main outcome is a mesh with a high level of photorealistic details. This enables both a good depth perception thanks to the mesh model and high visualization quality thanks to the 2D resolution of modern omnidirectional cameras. The fundamental step to reach this goal is the correct alignment between the 360 ° camera and the 3D mesh model. For this reason, we propose a method that embodies two steps: 1) find the 360 ° cameras pose within the current 3D environment; 2) project the high-quality 360 ° image on top of the mesh. After the method description, we outline its validation in two virtual reality scenarios, a mine and city environment, respectively, which allows us to compare the achieved results with the ground truth.</p

    Pharmacogenomics and analogues of the antitumor agent N6-isopentenyladenosine.

    N6-isopentenyladenosine (i6A), a member of the cytokinin family of plant hormones, has potent in vitro antitumour activity in dif- ferent types of human epithelial cancer cell lines. Gene expression profile analysis of i6A-treated cells revealed induction of genes (e.g., PPP1R15A, DNAJB9, DDIT3, and HBP1) involved in the negative regulation of cell cycle progression and reportedly up- regulated during cell cycle arrest in stress conditions. Of 6 i6A analogues synthesized, only the 1 with a saturated double bond of the isopentenyl side chain had in vitro antitumour activity, although weaker than that of i6A, suggesting that i6A biological ac- tivity is highly linked to its structure. In vivo analysis of i6A and the active analogue revealed no significant inhibition of cancer cell growth in mice by either reagent. Thus, although i6A may inhibit cell proliferation by regulating the cell cycle, further studies are needed to identify active analogues potentially useful in vivo

    Composition of the Essential Oil of Coristospermum cuneifolium and Antimicrobial Activity Evaluation

    AbstractFor the first time, the chemical composition and antimicrobial evaluation of Coristospermum cuneifolium (previously named Ligusticum lucidum subsp. cuneifolium) essential oil obtained from the aerial parts are reported in this work. Approximately 85% of the total constituents were identified by GC-MS analysis, evidencing the presence of 12 chemical components which belong to several classes of natural compounds. Most of them are reported for the first time in the Ligusticum genus (s.l.) and in the Apiaceae family. Their presence was able to provide a rationale for essential oil use in the field similar to those obtained from other species of the Ligusticum genus (s.l.). Moreover, the huge presence of aromatizing and flavoring components, accounting for 44.4% of the essential oil composition, might make C. cuneifolium a useful natural source of aromatic components for the food and cosmetic fields. In addition to this, a deep comparison of the essential oil of this species with that of other entities within the Ligusticum genus (s.l.) was performed and discussed on a chemotaxonomic basis.The essential oil was tested for its antimicrobial activity at both high and low inoculum (~5×105 and ~ 5×103 cfu/mL, respectively) against several bacterial and fungal strains, including methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Candida albicans (ATCC 14053), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (clinical strain), carbapenem-susceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae (clinical strain), carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (clinical strain), and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (clinical strain).A high potency against C. albicans was shown, with an absence of growth at the concentration of 3.01 mg/mL; similarly, for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus, a reduction of 1.73 and 2 log10 cfu/mL at the concentration of 3.01 mg/mL was observed. With regard to gram-negative microorganisms, only slight potency against A. baumannii was shown, whereas no activity was found against E. coli and K. pneumoniae

    A STUDY ON CORRELATION BETWEEN ELECTROMYOGRAPHICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL FINDINGS OF BACK MUSCLES IN SCOLIOSIS, ESPECIALLY CHANGES IN THE INTRAMUSCULAR NERVE ENDINGS.

In the cases of neurofibromatosis with scoliosis, intramuscular nerve endings showed almost normal morphological appearances but, comparative histograms of the diameters of the end-plates in each 5μ. group showed 2 peak formations.. One of these cases recorded fibrillation voltage at the concave side showed abnormal staining of terminal filamints of the end-plates in deep back muscles at the same side. The sensory nerve endings showed perfectly preserved histological appearances. 4. In cases of rachitogenic scoliosis, motor end-plates of the back muscles were observed using the histochemical method of cholinesterase staining and vital staining with methylene blue. Histograms of the diameters of the end-plates showed a noted reduction in size and in number of units, but no apparent degenerative changes in sensory and motor endings or in terminal axons were seen. 5. In a case of discogenic scoliosis, silver impregnation was applied on the back muscles at both sides of the curvature. In the convex side, collateral branching and swelling of the nerve fibers was observed and also the motor end-plates showed an abnormality of staining in terminal arborization, but, fibrillation voltage was not recorded. 6. In congenital scoliosis, electromyographic findings failed to trace fibrillation voltage, but, terminal axons in deep muscles, showed collateral branchig and an increased terminal innervation ratio in a highly affected case. In slightly curved cases, atrophic changes, and intramuscular fibers and endings appeared almost normal. 7. In the so-called idiopathic scoliosis , about 50% had not traced fibrillation voltage in the paravertebral back muscles. Degenerative findings.of the intramuscular nerve fibers and endings were not observed, but comparative histograms of the diameters of the end -plates showed 2 peak formations in the convex side of the back muscles. Innervation ratio was not changed and sensory nerve endings showed normal appearances.8. In idiopathic scoliosis, characterised by fibrillation voltage which was traced in the paravertebral back muscles, intramuscular motor nerve endings were degenerated in deep muscles of the convex side, and disseminated muscle atrophy in the concave side. In deep muscles of the convex side, terminal axons showed collateral branching and motor endplates, club-like swelling, and 2 peak formations of the histograms of the diameters. However, sensory nerve endings were normal in appearance. These findings lead to a conclusion that changes in the motor endings observed in paralytic scoliosis differed from histological changes in the cases of idiopathic scoliosis, in which fibrillation voltage had been traced. In paralytic scoliosis, histological changes of the back muscles showed various kinds of degenerative findings, but, in cases of idiopathic scoliosis with fibrillation voltage they showed collateral branching and degenerative changes of the end-plates, respectively, in deep back muscles especially in the convex side. In other kinds of scoliosis, neuromuscular changes were largely influenced by their own basic disorders such as, degeneration of discs, abnormality of vertebral bodies, nutritional deficiencies and metablic disorders. In the cases of idiopathic scoliosis without fibrillation voltage intramuscular nerve endings were preserved in good condition, but almost all of the cases of non-paralytic scoliosis showed an abnormality of the histograms of the endplates, or atrophic changes in deep muscles. Prophylactic treatment must be employed on the back muscles for the prevention of further deformity and progression of scoliosis.An electromyographical and histological study on 20 cases of various kinds of scoliosis was carried out. In particular, a biopsy of the back muscles at the apex of the primary curve was performed using the methods of gold chloride staining, silver impregnation modified by Seto, vital staining with methylene blue, and the histochemical demonstration of cholinesterase on the subneural apparatuses of the endplates. Specimens were taken from superficial (M. longissimus dorsi) and deep (M. multifidus) back muscles of scoliosis patients and in all cases, an electromyographic fibrillation voltage was picked up under deep general anesthesia with ether. This was done from the paravertebral back muscles and a comparison of histologic and electromyographic findings was performed. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Motor end-plates of normal back muscles, dissected at autopsy from adults were found to be concentrated in band-like narrow zones and situated at the mid-point of the muscle fibers. Through comparative histograms of the diameters of subneural apparatuses and those of the end-plates of gold chloride staining showed a close correlation. 2. Intramuscular endings in the cases of paralytic scoliosis showed remarkable collateral axonic sprouting and various kinds of pathological changes of the end-plates, multiple innervation, large and and small end-plates, thickened terminal filaments, failure to stain, irregular swelling, and abnormal terminal expansion. The motor endings of the musclespindle were also remarkably degenerated but sensory nerve fibers and endings remained undisturbed. In neuromuscular endings, pathological changes of the back muscles at the apex of the primary curve, displayed a distinguishing feature in a lack of uniformity in the degree of alignment and curvature, but, compared with superficial muscles, the deep muscles were significantly involved. In all cases a giant spike and fibrillation voltage was recorded from wide-spread various parts of the back muscles

    An epigraphene platform for coherent 1D nanoelectronics

    Exceptional edge state ballistic transport, first observed in graphene nanoribbons grown on the sidewalls of trenches etched in electronics grade silicon carbide even at room temperature, is shown here to manifest in micron scale epigraphene structures that are conventionally patterned on single crystal silicon carbide substrates. Electronic transport is dominated by a single electronic mode, in which electrons travel large distances without scattering, much like photons in an optical fiber. In addition, robust quantum coherence, non-local transport, and a ground state with half a conductance quantum are also observed. These properties are explained in terms of a ballistic edge state that is pinned at zero energy. The epigraphene platform allows interconnected nanostructures to be patterned, using standard microelectronics methods, to produce phase coherent 1D ballistic networks. This discovery is unique, providing the first feasible route to large scale quantum coherent graphene nanoelectronics, and a possible inroad towards quantum computing

    Phytochemical analysis and biological activities of the ethanolic extract of Daphne sericea Vahl flowering aerial parts collected in Central Italy

    In this paper, the first phytochemical analysis of the ethanolic extract of Daphne sericea Vahl flowering aerial parts collected in Italy and its biological activities were reported. Eleven compounds were identified i.e., -linolenic acid (1), tri-linoleoyl-sn-glycerol (2), pheophorbide a ethyl ester (3), pilloin (4), sinensetin (5), yuanhuanin (6), rutamontine (7), syringin (8), p-coumaric acid (9), p-anisic acid (10) and caffeic acid (11). To the best of our knowledge, compounds (1-4, 7-8 and 10) were isolated from D. sericea for the first time during this work, whereas sinensetin (5) represents a newly identified component of the entire Thymelaeaceae family. The extract was found to possess radical scavenging against both DPPH and 2,20-azino-bis(3-thylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS.+) radicals, with at least a 40-fold higher potency against the latter. Moreover, chelating abilities against both ferrous and ferric ions have been highlighted, thus suggesting a possible indirect antioxidant power of the extract. Although the precise bioactive compounds remain to be discovered, the polyphenolic constituents, including phenolic acids, tannins and flavonoids, seem to contribute to the antioxidant power of the phytocomplex. In addition, the extract produced cytotoxic effects in MDA-MB-231 and U87-MG cancer cell lines, especially at the concentration of 625 g/mL and after 48–72 h. Further studies are required to clarify the contribution of the identified compounds in the bioactivities of the extract and to support possible future applications

    Protected transport in the epigraphene edge state

    The graphene edge state has long been predicted to be a zero energy, one-dimensional electronic waveguide mode that dominates transport in neutral graphene nanostructures, with potential application to graphene devices. However, its exceptional properties have been observed in only a few cases, each employing novel fabrication methods without a clear path to large-scale integration. We show here that interconnected edge-state networks can be produced using non-conventional facets of electronics grade silicon carbide wafers and scalable lithography, which cuts the epitaxial graphene and apparently fuses its edge atoms to the silicon carbide substrate. Measured epigraphene edge state (EGES) conduction is ballistic with mean free paths exceeding tens of microns, thousands of times greater than for the diffusive 2D bulk. It is essentially independent of temperature, decoupled from the bulk and substantially immune to disorder. Remarkably, EGES transport involves a non-degenerate conductance channel that is pinned at zero energy, yet it does not generate a Hall voltage, implying balanced electron and hole components. These properties, observed at all tested temperatures, magnetic fields, and charge densities, are not predicted by present theories, and point to a zero-energy spin one-half quasiparticle, composed of half an electron and a half a hole moving in opposite directions

    PARSEC: stellar tracks and isochrones with the PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code

    We present the updated version of the code used to compute stellar evolutionary tracks in Padova. It is the result of a thorough revision of the major input physics, together with the inclusion of the pre-main sequence phase, not present in our previous releases of stellar models. Another innovative aspect is the possibility of promptly generating accurate opacity tables fully consistent with any selected initial chemical composition, by coupling the OPAL opacity data at high temperatures to the molecular opacities computed with our AESOPUS code (Marigo & Aringer 2009). In this work we present extended sets of stellar evolutionary models for various initial chemical compositions, while other sets with different metallicities and/or different distributions of heavy elements are being computed. For the present release of models we adopt the solar distribution of heavy elements from the recent revision by Caffau et al. (2011), corresponding to a Sun's metallicity Z=0.0152. From all computed sets of stellar tracks, we also derive isochrones in several photometric systems. The aim is to provide the community with the basic tools to model star clusters and galaxies by means of population synthesis techniques.Comment: To appear on MNRAS.
